Dior Soft Cashmere (669) Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Soft Cashmere (669)
Dior Soft Cashmere (669) 5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.24 oz.) is a new, taupe-leaning color story with four shimmery shades and one matte. Four of the five eyeshadows were richly pigmented, had smooth, blendable textures, and wore well, while one shade (the second) was sheer, powdery, and sparkly, which resulted in some fallout during application and during wear.

Soft Cashmere #1
Soft Cashmere #1 is a light-medium, golden taupe with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation in a single layer that could be built up to full coverage with less than half of a layer more. The texture was smooth, dense without being overly firm or stiff, and had light creaminess to it, which made it easy to work with and helped it sit well on my skin. It wore nicely for eight hours before fading visibly.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to have a "creamy and comfortable texture" that is long-wearing and has "intense color" (or "high-pigment"). There are five finishes that can be found within various palettes: matte, satin, shimmer, metallic, highlighter, and glitter, though there aren't specific descriptions by finish, unfortunately.
There were a few shades that seemed more sparkly and were sheerer, more like layering shades, while the other finishes tended to be pigmented. In general, the texture was moderately dense with the matte shades being slightly thinner and a smidgen powdery in the pan compared to the satin, shimmer, and metallic shades.
Aside from those more sparkly shades, the formula was blendable, pigmented, easy to work with, and lasted an average of eight hours on me (without a primer).

Soft Cashmere #2
Soft Cashmere #2 has a light, pinky-beige base with flecks of pink and peach sparkle. It had sheerer coverage, which didn’t build up well; it seemed more like a layering kind of shade, though I didn’t see anything called out as such, so it’s hard to know if it was on purpose or not. The texture was lightly powdery with a touch of fallout during application. It lasted for seven and a half hours and had light fallout over time.

Soft Cashmere #5
Soft Cashmere #5 is a deep, taupe-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was soft, finely-milled, and blendable with a smidgen of powderiness in the pan, but it was prone to fallout nor did it sheer out too readily. It had opaque color coverage that lasted nicely for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

This is such a beautiful look and thanks for your amazing review as always Christine! Have really enjoyed reading your thoughts on these palettes as well as seeing the types of looks you have created. I know there are a ton of new releases right now and likely a very busy time for you – would be very curious to hear your input on Tutu, especially in comparison to Tom Ford Meteoric (even informally if you don’t have a full review)?
Hi Maya: I believe Christine posted a review on Tutu already.
Sorry..confused Tulle with Tutu! Tutu would be my pick tu.
Remember that not only can you see the dupes…if/when Tutu is reviewed….you can also do a palette comparison.
I’ve been wanting to buy Tom Ford’s Nude Dip for so long, but this palette almost swayed me. Shame about the second shade as the rest look beautiful. At this price point you’d want all the shades to be high performing.
I love this….but it reminds me quite a bit of Nude Dip, so I will pass on it.
I love the eye look you’ve done and I love these shadows but I’ve got dupes (sometimes 2 or 3) for all of them so I can save my “mad money” for the ones I really cannot resist.
What a visually appealing palette. Too bad about that one shade though… might still get it – I’m a sucker for these tones.
Thinking this has a similar colour story to the new ND… albeit less contrast.
A very rich looking palette but I can dupe these colors many times over.
Soft and very appropriate for work type settings too.
OMG – how I love this quint! Shade 2 was a definite disappointment, but the other shades are a neutral lovers feast. The taupe shades are perfectly done.
Dior has really hit its strides with this collection and a beautiful eye look Christine.
The perfect taupe eye for us in the med.-tan and darker category! Tone and depth wise, that is. That #2 shade is the only killjoy with this.
This one is beautiful too, but would look muddy on me. I think the new ND palette is more contrasty and probably a better fit (review pending).
This reminds me of an old bareminerals ready eyeshadow quad I had and loved but truthfully I would only use 3 of the 5 shades with regularity/ For the longest time nothing could beat the ready eyeshadow formula. I had recently ordered the new Dior quint in Tutu from nordstrom, and they sent me Jungle. Strangely, it was in a box labeled tutu. I of course have returned it, and hopefully will be receiving the correct item shortly. I loved the feel of the packaging in my hand to be honest I never have purchased anything so spendy before. It did make me feel rich for a second. LOL
Top right shade is many times a highligt shade for dior palettes and this is why you cannot build it up. You’ve been reviewing these for a long time, you should have noticed the trend by now. Three out of four you’ve reviewed in this new collection fall into this trend.
Hi Chris,
Dior needs to explicitly say as much in their marketing. It is not up to me to make a subjective call, especially as it is most definitely NOT in every palette, so I’m not sure how I could accurately make assumptions… they very readily range from sheer to mostly opaque even when they are more sparkly – so what is it? Sheer? Semi-opaque? Buildable? Not buildable? They are all over the map and you are asking me to assume one thing – I just don’t know how that’s… possible.
Per Dior, they advertise the new 5 Couleurs Couture as “high-pigment.”
“A creamy and comfortable texture that does not migrate into the crease of the eyelid.
– Intense, color with extremely long wear.
– A variety of finishes: matte, satin, shimmer, metallic, highlighter and glitter.”
Dior does not indicate that any finish is anything but “intense, color with extremely long wear.”
As always, I review based on the claims the brand makes.
Uh-uh.
They don’t have to say anything. They don’t tell you which is shimmer and which is matte either. Very few “complete” shadow paletes don’t have a highlighter and it’s always the lightest shade with no consistency. You are a makeup reviewer, you should know it already.
I doubt they don’t say it though. See, the paper these paletTes come with have instructions and they say the top right shade is to “highlight”. Since 2014 and they’re so consistent they used the same instructions in both in 2014 and 2016, even though the design, formula, and name changed between them.
I wouldn’t know if 2020 companion paper says “highlight” since I haven’t bought any of them yet. But even if it does say, you’d not care. See, you never bothered to read those papers for the last six years to know top right is highlight, why would you read it now?
I get that you have a lot of work, but you can’t claim that you review based on the claims the brand makes at all. You never read what they even claimed to begin with in the last six years.
Hi Chris,
I actually didn’t notice any booklets that in these (just like they got rid of the fabric holders). Highlight does not mean sheer, though, so you are making an inference based on your preferences – which is the opposite of what I do 🙂
Again, I prioritize what the brand puts at the point of purchase — this is the same treatment I give all brands — which is where you would read to learn about a product before purchasing and determining if it makes sense for your needs. It does the consumer no good if something says “sheer” buried on a small paper inside the box after I’ve purchased!
Logically, what you’re saying just doesn’t make sense! I have no idea why you’d use what they’re saying in something you can only read IF you’ve purchased; that’s almost worse since that’s deceptive marketing! Using the brand’s words published on their website to entice customers to buy are the claims they are making is clear, logical, AND readily available for ANYONE to view and verify on their own.
This is gorgeous! It reminds me of Nude Dip which I have. Do you think it is justifiable to buy this too?
I think this offers more dimension and a slightly darker look since it isn’t quite as metallic or as light-leaning as Nude Dip… so if you wear Nude Dip a lot and have thought, “I wish it was darker,” then maybe!
Thanks!
Hi Christine. Quick question . Are these quints supposed to have a velvet pouch ? I picked Up the Tutu palette today at Bloomingdale’s, and the box did not have a pouch or instructions paper/card . I usually buy Chanel and they have both . I think you mentioned that they did away with the paper? ..my second palette – Soft Cashmere has not arrived yet. I think I saw a YouTuber show a blue velvet pouch. Perhaps, my box was incomplete. Thank you !
I don’t think they did, but it’s not a detail I would remember (my memory isn’t that great) since I don’t keep any of the pouches (in general).
Thank you for replying. Christine. When I receive my second palette from Sephora, I will see how it arrives. Have a wonderful day Christine.
No problem! Let me know and then I’ll probably manage to remember it should another reader ask! I feel like Dior got rid of those velvet pouches in general, though…
Hi Christine,
I received my new Dior Soft Cashmere palette and there is no pouch or instructions. There is a small diagram on the top of the lid, indicating that the top three colors are for a soft look and bottom three for an intense look. Thank you for pointing out that the #2 shade in both palettes have some fallout. I am 59 and glitter on my face is not a look I want. Congratulations on your new upcoming palettes. I have never tried any Sydney Grace products. Thank you for all your hard work . 🤗
Thank you for following up, Libby! Hope you enjoy your new palette 🙂
