Dior Pied de Poule (096) 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette ($60.00 for 0.21 oz.) For fall, Dior’s “reinvented” their 5 Couleurs’ palettes with five new color combinations. I bought Pied de Poule (096) as it looked like an interesting mix of smoky, fall shades. The palette was decent but not a favorite for me due to inconsistent pigmentation in the shades. In general, the eyeshadow formula felt thin and drier, though the blue and green shades were less dry (the blue felt soft and buttery–it was a bit of a tease since that was the first I swatched!).

Pied de Poule #1 is a dark, smoky blue with gray and a frosted finish. It’s almost a blue-teal because of the muted quality of the color. It had excellent color payoff, and it was the best performing shade in the palette as the texture was soft, dense, and buttery. It wore well for nine hours before fading. NARS Giove (P, $29.00) is lighter, bluer. Too Faced Heavy Metal (P, $16.00) is darker, less shimmery. theBalm #17 (P, $6.50) is lighter. Makeup Geek Ocean Breeze (P, $5.99) is lighter. Dior Cosmos (281) (P, $30.00) is a cream product. Tom Ford Beauty Cobalt Rush #4 (P) is less shimmery. Urban Decay Occupy (LE, $18.00) is lighter, more shimmery. Illamasqua Android (P, $25.50) is more shimmery but very similar in color. Guerlain Les Gris #3 (P) is bluer. Giorgio Armani #20 (LE, $33.00) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Pied de Poule #2 is a sparkling, light-medium gold with lighter gold sparkle and shimmer. It had semi-opaque color coverage, and the texture was thin and a little dry. The color wore well for almost eight hours, but there was noticeable fall out after six hours of wear. Makeup Geek Bling (P, $5.99) is less sparkly. Clarins The Essentials #2 (LE) is darker. Dior Golden Flower #2 (LE) is less sparkly. Tarina Tarantino Taurella (LE) is less sparkly. theBalm C1 (LE, $16.00) is less sparkly. Disney by Sephora Charming (LE) is less sparkly. MAC Vanilla (P, $21.00) is more metallic. MAC Nylon (P, $15.00) is less sparkly. MAC Dazzlelight (P, $15.00) is less sparkly. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Pied de Poule #3 is a medium-dark black with a matte finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation, and the texture was a bit dry, a little powdery–not really stiff, just thin and dry. On me, there was slight fading after seven and a half hours of wear. As it is a more basic shade, it is similar to a lot of other black eyeshadows with little difference (mostly pigmentation with respect to this particular shade) — see comparison swatches / view dupes.

Pied de Poule #4 is a blackened burgundy with multi-colored sparkle over a matte finish. This shade was very dry, so it yielded sheer color payoff and was harder to blend on the skin. The sparkle did apply to the lid, but a lot of it fell out within five hours of wear. It’s such a dark color that it ends up looking more like a black eyeshadow than one with purple tones–but if you have pink-toned skin, you may see the nuance better. Ulta Night Sky (P, $10.00) is black. Chanel Prelude #4 (P) has no shimmer/sparkle. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Pied de Poule #5 is a rich, earthy green with warm, olive brown undertones and a soft, frosted finish. It had good pigmentation, and the texture was a little dry but blendable and fairly easy to work with. The color wore well for eight and a half hours on me before fading. theBalm #30 (P, $6.50) is lighter. Charlotte Tilbury Smoky Emerald (P) is a cream product. Makeup Geek Kryptonite (P, $6.99) is lighter. Urban Decay Stash (LE, $18.00) is a touch lighter. Dior Bonne Etoile (384) #1 (LE) is a smidgen warmer and lighter. MAC Greensmoke (P, $15.00) is lighter. Giorgio Armani #24 (LE, $33.00) is warmer. bareMinerals Eureka (P) is lighter, warmer. bareMinerals Speaker Box (LE) is warmer. This was one palette from Dior that I was interested in and for it to receive such a low rating…I’m passing on this one.Now I continue to hold out for Tom Ford.

I love when you include looks on your eye. I know this is extra time and work for you, but it really adds a lot for us readers to be able to see it as it would look worn on the eye. Love your blog, thanks for enabling us beauty addicts. 🙂

Your photos are excellent. This is the first time I’ve seen much differentiation between those darker shades. And I actually really like the eye you did. At least the colors didn’t run together. It’s such a shame this palette didn’t live up to expectations. Such a stunner in the pan!

Awww too bad it’s not a quality palette. The swatches look pretty good and the eye look is incredible!!!! Love the idea of this, the colors are amazing.

I work for Dior, and we relaunched the 5 Couleur palettes in a brand new formula. Each palette will have 5 different finishes to create a range of looks. The pigmentation for each shade is supposed to be different. The center shade is the focus color. Pair it with 2 of the other shades to create a look. Inside the box, there’s a foldout guide that explains the options. Hope this helps to clarify the differences!

Thanks for sharing, Jenni! Unfortunately, the booklets reiterate the press material I have from Dior as well as what various retailers’ websites have to describe the palettes (including Dior’s own). Nothing suggests that pigmentation should vary from shade to shade, only that each palette has a variety of finishes, and I don’t have any issues with the palette having different finishes in it. As far as I see as a customer, there is nothing that indicates I should expect sheer color – only “true to the boldness of the colour” and “to let the Colour express itself endlessly.”

From the booklet:

“True to the boldness of the colour Creation from the House of Dior, each harmony of the 5 Couleurs palette explores a unique chromatic universe. Built around a central shade, the signature of the palette, 4 accessory shades are used to create the style for a multi-faceted look. The 5 Couleurs palette boasts a wide variety of long-wearing textures and shades with a host of effects: matte, satiny, iridescent and ultra-shimmering to let the Colour express itself endlessly and dress the eyes with exceptional makeup looks. Like a couture wardrobe for the eyes, 5 Couleurs is the ultimate palette of couture creation for mixing and matching shades while giving free rein to your creativity to achieve custom makeup looks.”

From Dior’s website:

“True to the bold colour creation from the House of Dior, each harmony explores a unique world of colour. Based on a central shade, the signature of the palette, 4 accessory shades are used to create a multi-faceted look. The 5 Couleurs palette boasts a wide variety of textures and shades with a host of effects: matte, satiny, iridescent and ultra-shimmery for infinite ways to convey Colour and dress the eyes with exceptional makeup. Like a couture wardrobe for the eyes, 5 Couleurs gives free rein to your creativity to achieve custom makeup results. Dior has also created two ready-to-wear looks for the eyes – natural and sophisticated – based on the central shade.”

Yes the Chicken Foot is Dior when it misses the mark. I love Trafalgar though. But was tempted by this one till I swatched it in the store.

You have to be so careful with these quints. This is what makes your reviews so wonderful!

You have sold me on MAC Greensmoke though for my “little” MAC eye shadow stash. Little is about 15, and counting , , ,

I’m sort of relieved that this is mediocre at best because it’s very much the sort of “boring” colour grouping I love and it’s in a similar vein to Tisse Gabrielle, which I just bought so I’m glad I won’t be tempted by this one.

If only it had performed better. Dior used to be a favourite of mien, years ago. I have loads of eye shadows from them, some of them are just fantastic, some not very good at all.
I like your look, I must say.
Money saved on this one. Thanks for the review, excellent as always.

Wow, the look is stunning. Sometimes I prefer less pigmented very dark shades – can be easier to work with for me. Understandable grade though, however!

Genevieve Avatar

I love the colours and the looks you created Christine. However it is a shame that the product is less than stellar for the price. I also think that most of the colours are dupable. Are you going to review the Carre Blue palette? That is the most interesting one for me.

I laughed out loud when I read this actually (literally, I LOL’d) – it’s almost like this is the ‘troll’ palette, where the first shade is AWESOME and then the rest kinda make you sad. When I say I laughed, it wasn’t exactly *happy* laughter…

Shade #4 looks like it could be so gorgeous!

Liz Avatar

Wow. Sorry to see that as I was really thinking I’d buy a few. Too bad. This one looked pretty as does the 796 that’s not out yet.

This palette was the first palette I bought and I own 2 other palettes from the fall collection. I must say I’m terribly disappointed with the quality of the shades in this quint. I experience the same thing, difficult to blend for shade #4 and poor color payoff from shade #2. I own Jardin #456, the textures were more creamy but could not last more than 8 hours even with Nars eyeshadow primer. In Singapore, the Dior palette is priced S$2 more than Tom Ford palette. Expensive and disappointing.

Leslie Avatar

I already purchased this palette and I absolutely LOVE it!!! I’ve never bought a Dior quint because I never liked any of the colors. They were all either too light or too sparkly. I literally gasped when I saw this at the Dior counter. I had to have it. Pictures do not do it justice. I’ve already used it several times for day (using a light hand lol) a couple of nights out. It creates a beautiful smokey eye for evening. I’m very excited about this palette. 😀 😀

Leslie Avatar

To begin with, I love the look you did! I’m going to try that one for our next evening out. 😀 I love #4 and #5 blended with #2 and using a winged eyeliner. I’ve worn #1 by itself for a simple, intense eye, lining my waterline with black eyeliner. We are going on a cruise in November and this palette will definitely be in my makeup bag!!

Liz Avatar

Now that I’ve checked these out in person, I agree. I don’t know why they’re not pigmented, particularly at this price point. This should’ve been an amazing quint. They’re all not greatly pigmented but I did purchase Trafalgar. Bought Estée Lauder shadow primer which intensifies shadow and they’re such pretty colors, even if pigment lacking, I still liked Trafalgar. Curious your review on that. Thx.
