Dior New Look (599) Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
New Look (599)
Dior New Look (599) 5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.24 oz.) is a new, smokier neutral color story that had one matte eyeshadow with the rest having some degree of shimmer. There was one more sparkly shade, which was sheerer (though buildable and not as chunky), but the other four shades were pigmented, smooth, and blendable with good longevity.

New Look #1
New Look #1 is a medium-dark, taupe-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a smooth, metallic sheen. It had nearly opaque color payoff in a single layer, which applied evenly to bare skin and blended out with ease. The texture was smooth, dense without being too firm or stiff, and easy to pick up. This shade lasted nicely for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to have a "creamy and comfortable texture" that is long-wearing and has "intense color" (or "high-pigment"). There are five finishes that can be found within various palettes: matte, satin, shimmer, metallic, highlighter, and glitter, though there aren't specific descriptions by finish, unfortunately.
There were a few shades that seemed more sparkly and were sheerer, more like layering shades, while the other finishes tended to be pigmented. In general, the texture was moderately dense with the matte shades being slightly thinner and a smidgen powdery in the pan compared to the satin, shimmer, and metallic shades.
Aside from those more sparkly shades, the formula was blendable, pigmented, easy to work with, and lasted an average of eight hours on me (without a primer).

New Look #2
New Look #2 is a brighter, light-medium golden peach with warm undertones and flecks of pink and gold sparkle. It had medium coverage in a single layer, which was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. The sparkle seemed to be slightly smaller in particle size compared to some of the other glittery shades found in the Dior palettes, so it was less prone to fallout. The texture was soft, slightly drier and more powdery compared to the other four shades. It wore decently for eight hours but had light fallout over time.

New Look #3
New Look #3 is a deep eggplant purple with subtle, warm undertones and a satin sheen. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented with a smooth, soft consistency that wasn’t too firmly nor too softly pressed into the pan, which ensured it was easy to pick up but remained blendable. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before fading visibly.

New Look #4
New Look #4 is a light, golden bronze with strong, warm undertones and a metallic finish. The consistency was soft, smooth, and dense without being overly firm in the pan, so it picked up well with a dry brush and had good adhesion to bare skin. The pigmentation was opaque and wore nicely for eight and a half hours.

New Look #5
New Look #5 is a blackened brown with cooler undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage in a single layer, which built up easily to full coverage with just a smidgen more product on top. The texture was smooth to the touch, finely-milled but more firmly pressed compared to the other four shades, though it helped prevent fallout. It lasted well for eight and a half hours before fading a touch.

I’ve been waiting and waiting (I was going to say “patiently” but that would be a lie) for your review on this beauty. I was hoping I’d be able to dupe all the shades but I can’t so I will be picking this one up as soon as I can get to the Dior counter.
I knew you would love this one!
Genevieve, are you planning to get any of these? I realize they must be even more pricey in Australia than they are in Canada but I’m glad I indulged in Jungle and I have the feeling I’ll fall victim to this one too.
It’s pretty, and it covers a lot of depth! I know several readers were specifically looking forward to this review, I think they’ll be pleased 🙂
I like how, with this and the other quints in this line, there’s a bit of variation in the undertones within the overall colour theme. With this one there’s more red and more gold-toned browns, with the Denim some of the blues were more green-toned and some more purple-toned, and so on. I still really like combining those kind of different undertones within a neutral colour story, so it’s really satisfying to me to see those!
Sssssmokey!!! I really love this one’s rich, cooler smokiness. Again, I have dupes for at least 3-4 shades, but all in different palettes, though. Hard call.
This looks like a beautiful wearable fall staple
I really love the cooler tones of this palette and the addition of that gorgeous smouldering plum shade is a bonus. Again, that pesky second shade lets the palette down.
I have a feeling that Mariella is going to love this little gem – it is up both of our alleys….
I just got this palette and I actually love how the second shade performs! I like how sheer it is and it makes the loveliest veil of subtle shimmer on my brow bone and inner corner. I haven’t tried it as a topper yet, but I’m happy with how it serves my purpose.
My “alley” has become a super-highway with this release! Jungle is all I expected and MORE (and in that one, the 2nd shade is fantastic; it’s #1 that takes a bit of work!). I like the dark plum shade in this one and I am generally leery of those reddish plum shades but this looks like a flattering one for me. I’m likely to pick this one up this week. I’m eager to see Christine’s review of Grand Bal (though from a few tutorials I’ve seen, it looks like it might be a let-down).
I just got this palette and I am so in love with it!!! I have a lot of colors similar to these in my vast collection, since I am such a sucker for these kinds of tones. But seeing the finishes and hearing great things about the formula and how it performs, I couldn’t resist purchasing this as my first foray into Dior. I love this as much as my Pat McGrath and Tom Ford eyeshadows, so this is a big deal to me! If I had to take only one little palette with me on a trip, even a long one, this would be it. I find it to be very versatile for me, and it’s such a joy to work with. It’s just so freakin’ elegant and beautiful!
Somehow, this little palette is making me excited about brown eyeshadow again. Shoot–I really don’t want to fall in love with a $65.00 five-pan eyeshadow palette, but DANG!
Guess what just came home with me??? I deadlifted 120 pounds at the gym (my goal was to lift 100 pounds by January so I’m ahead of the game! Not bad for an old lady) so I felt I deserved “something” to mark this milestone and this is it. Funny thing is I told Rose, the Dior SA, that I’d picked up Jungle the other day when she was off. They only had one left and I told her how fabulous it is and she pulled it from the case and put it aside for herself. We joked that *I* should be on the other side of the counter if I can sell her own product to her!
Impressive, Mariella!!
Hope you enjoy your new palette! 🙂
Thanks! I’m quite proud of myself, to tell the truth! And even if I hadn’t, I’d have found some other excuse (“the sun came up” or “there’s a ‘d’ in the day of week”) to buy this 2nd palette. But I am DONE now for a while.
New look #3 shade (deep burgundy) is a stunning shade. The whole palette is gorgeous. I think Dior has done a good job with these new palettes.
I ordered New Look essentially for the burgundy shade, but the quad complex seems to me to veer too much towards the hot undertones. Soft Cashmere seemed too shallow to me for my armochromatic complex (soft deep winter but with hazel eyes). I am very undecided, I love cold but decisive and versatile neutrals… Help me Christine!!!
What about combining it with a cooler pink that you may already have instead of the peach in this palette?
