ColourPop Sticky Sweet Super Shock Cheek Review, Photos, Swatches

ColourPop Sticky Sweet Super Shock Cheek
ColourPop Sticky Sweet Super Shock Cheek

ColourPop Sticky Sweet Super Shock Cheek ($8.00 for 0.15 oz.) is described as a “deep violet with pink duo chrome finish.” It’s a plummy purple with warm, reddish plum undertones and cooler-toned pink and violet micro-shimmer to give a more pearly, metallic sheen. Urban Decay Rapture (P, $26.00) is lighter, warmer, less shimmery. Tarte Embraced (LE, $26.00) is lighter, pinker. IT Cosmetics Magical in Mauve (P, $24.00) is darker, less shimmery. theBalm Cabana Boy (P, $21.00) is darker, less shimmery, warmer. MAC Plum Foolery (P, $21.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

You know that I had to go for the purple shade first, right? (It also helped that as the darkest shade, it was the one I naturally swatched last — always swatch lightest to darkest to avoid staining of the skin!) The new highlighters appear to be the Super Shock Cheek formula, just with a “Pearlized” finish. It’s a cream blush formula with more of a cream-powder hybrid texture, as the product is spongy but not conventionally creamy nor does it have the slip of your traditional cream blush formula. The texture of the Pearlized shades of the Super Shock Cheek formula seemed to have a more emollient feel to them compared to the other Super Shock Cheek shades, which is actually similar to how I feel about the more pearly/metallic finishes in their cream eyeshadow range as well–they just have a wetter feel, even though they still feel and look more like powder once the product hits the skin. The coverage is supposed to be buildable, and you’ll get the “highest amount of coverage” by applying with fingertips and the sheerest when applied with a duo fiber brush.

Sticky Sweet is buildable from semi-sheer to mostly opaque with a very blendable consistency that diffused nicely when skimmed across the cheeks. There’s a noticeable sheen in person that is somewhere between pearl and metallic, but it somehow managed not to emphasize the skin’s texture (though it’s not going to smooth it out!). On me, it wore well for nine and a half hours before fading. It’s another winner for ColourPop, and I’m very much looking forward to working my way through the rest of the Pearlized blushes/highlighters to see if they all hold up as well. Now, if only they’d do eyeliner next!

It’s really pretty, but I wish they’d called it something else. A cream blush named “Sticky” just sounds unpleasant, even if it isn’t actually sticky.

This would be so gorgeous on women of color. That’s one of the things that really impresses me about Colour Pop; they have a more inclusive shade range than a lot of brands 5x the cost. What other brand has highlighters in such a wide range of shades and tones? I’m really excited to see the rest of the range!

Celia Avatar

It truly is! I’ve applied this shade so far to yellow-toned medium-deep, super cool dark brown (very much like Lupita’s color), red-toned deep espresso, and medium olive-yellow skin tones and it looked beautiful on everyone. And like Christine said, it’s so great to see swatches on multiple skin tones every time at their site. Every highlight from CP I’ve tried has looked great on everyone so far. Their dimensional, multi-tonal sheen and buildable nature allow the highlights to take on a nice and unique look for everyone.

Ha! I never have heard of that! Well, I just learned something new. Holy cow..I know you had to of seen it and of course I get his email the night I just threw down way more than I had planned , ColourPop has bronzers out and new shadows and lippies! I should just stop buying other brands altogether!:)

Nicole Avatar

Oh good! I hope you do some reviews. I almost ordered them and the shadows. But I got worried about fall out with the shadows and fell asleep, lol. Then this morning,my daughter hit me up for soccer camp sign ups and a dress for the Spring fling which is tomorrow! Ugh. Somehow, even though their stuff is a steal,I can’t leave the sight without spending at least $75.lol

In Spanish in my culture (Mexican), “boba” is used to describe or call a female who is ditzy, scatter-brained, dumb and the like…if you say “bobo” it’s calling a male ditzy etc

Ginny Avatar

Aaarg, this one wasn’t on my list and now I might have to add it. I love the way it sheered out and diffused on your cheek.

My order with Sickly Sweet, Hippo, Monster, Smoke’N Whistles, Stole the Show, Boba, and the matte shadow Downtown (which I picked up to see how it works as a contour. Very nicely!) came in a few days ago and I have been loving the highlights. Each one is special and unique and I’m loving mixing them together for custom looks (Sticky Sweet plus Hippo with a bit of Monster gives a magical, fairy look). They are so, SO wonderfully soft. I love that Boba and Sticky Sweet can be built up as blush/highlight hybrids as well. With my all-time favorite NARS Adelaide off the market, ColourPop is filling in my fairy-colored highlight needs 😛 I was amazed at how natural and lovely even the most metallic ones went on. For such complex highlights, they really impart a healthy glow.

Celia Avatar

Oh, and I have used them on a variety of skin tones so far ranging from palest neutral porcelain to extremely cool deepest skin (and lots of tones in between with a variety of undertones including red, gold, yellow, olive, etc) and they work amazingly on all. Love that ColourPop focuses on diverse ranges.

Celia Avatar

So good on a variety of tones! I love how the highlighters show on dark skin (Boba in particular is just gorgeous). Downtown I placed with fingers and then blended out with RealTechnique contour brushes (tried it with the angled straight one and the smaller, rounded one). It’s a nice contour! Definitely ashy and cool-enough to work and easily buildable (so for me and my pale self, a soft application with fingers or a light blending with a brush works best while darker tones can build it up more and use a heavier finger application). Definitely won’t replace John Doe or Hollow in my kit, but for a five dollar contour option it is VERY good and worth a try and will have its own place in my kit.

Catie Avatar

Christine,

I’m sure you’ve mentioned this in previous posts, so sorry to repeat. But, what’s your favorite method of application? If a brush, what type?

Once again, thanks for all you do!

Nancy T Avatar

The first thing that popped into my head was fresh BERRIES!!! This shade is gorgeous. And not a dull berry or plum shade either, it has life to it.

Christine Avatar

Hey Di,

Ingredient list pic posted here: http://www.temptalia.com/sneak-peek-colourpop-super-shock-cheeks-pearlized-highlighters-photos-swatches

They appeared to have the same ingredient list for all shades when I was looking through them. ColourPop is also good about their lists and has one posted for every product, so you can find the list for this shade here: https://colourpop.com/product/sticky-sweet/

Chanel blush is more pigmented with a brush, though they’re similarly pigmented with fingertips. Chanel’s is more traditional cream but has a similar dry down/powder-like look and feel once its on the skin. I find Chanel’s formula to be more forgiving/easier to use over the Super Shock Cheek formula (generally – I haven’t tried enough of the Pearlized versions to weigh in as heavily on those). Chanel will give you a heavier look, ColourPop more of a stained/flushed look. They both wear long on me.

The formula of the Super Shock Cheeks has the texture and feel of Chanel’s Illusion d’Ombres, though.

ColourPop does it again!! I’ll definitely be picking up some shades to try, just waiting to see more reviews

Lotus Avatar

Wow. Damn. Just.. Whoa! 😀 Do you have pictures of your fingers in motion with the texture to show? I’m still so confused! Are they like Armani ETK INTENSE? Do they stain? Emollient as in silicone? What were the other ColorPop blushes? I missed them! 🙁 Really Super interested in what they are comparable to! I can’t seem to put it together in my head yet.. How big is the round container? Diameter/depth? I’ve been away going through forced menopause for insurance to approve necessary ovary removal (TMI? Sorry!!!) and I’m now overwhelmed like a child! I recently bought some powder blushes and after seeing this and the highlighter swatches, with my dry skin.. I’m wondering why I did and if I should go for these and return them? Oh wow.. Gorgeous, thank you so much for the review! I flush this color! 🙂 This, Boba, Hippo, Monster, and Smokin Whistles have me at … O.O Please advise?! :))))))

Christine Avatar

They’re squishy – like playdoh 🙂 If you press them, it will indent, but you will not get a glob of creamy blush out or anything like that. It doesn’t flake away like an ETK would, since that’s really just a loosely pressed powder. The pot seems around 2″ in diameter, maybe a little less. I have no idea how deep it goes, but probably not super deep.

Hope you’re doing okay, Lotus! Good luck!

Lotus Avatar

Christine, You’re an angel! Thank you so so much! 🙂 They seem perfect! Large enough for my left hand to get a hold of it, so that’s great news! 🙂 and play-doh.. I have to try this! Done deal! I’ll wait until Boba is back and then have my attack route planned! 😀 I can’t thank you enough. And yes, I’m doing okay. Chronic illness is very hard with the twists mind take, but my spirit refuses to crush. Peeking in here daily has, of course, been an on going therapy for me. 🙂 I just restrain fro reading too much or I’ll be captured for debt! Haha! So again, I thank you in many ways. Of course I had jumped in the MJB Highliners at launch from their site and they were a happy gift to myself! You know I love them! I’m trying. It is hard, but I like who I am and all I have to be grateful for is a blessing . Like coming here when I’m down. 🙂 always something beautiful sharing with kindness and honesty. Inspiring and hopeful, you are. Thank you. A million times, thank you. I will try to interact more as I can. Please know I’m still enjoying all you do if I am silent. Blessings, Lotus

Well I looked and loved but noticed dupes with my Charlotte Tilbury & highlighters.. So my question then goes to you: to experience this creation, what color is most unique that I should try? I was thinking an orange, Bonus/Tonic/Fruit Salad, or a deep fuchsia? Pegacorn perhaps? At least for the name alone! Monster, lunch money? Your recommendations are highly valued! XO! Early Bitd is s matte Love is the Drug..Thumper/Mochi so similar.. Love Glow.. Pie/Homie? Blushes are my favorite to collect as they have sided me all my life in creating a non-sick look so I don’t mind having many, yet do feel guilty if I have dupes. I’m not sure how I feel about NARS’ Starscape. It would be best dabbed onto moisturizer than diffused, but ice not had a chance to try this. Maybe s return and a dupe for that? I’m definitely overwhelmed and saddened by dupes, yet still attracted to them and would very much like to try this formula. When you have time, if you have time, may I please ask your professional opinion? Thank you. 🙂 Goodnight! I’ll be dreaming in shades of peach-fuchsia highlighted by shivering sunsets.. 🙂 xx <3

Christine Avatar

I can’t recall which ones are most unique offhand, though here on this post, Sticky Sweet is certainly more unique. I think the highlighters are trending to being more unique, as some are duochromes, which is rare in blush, and then the finish is high-shine but not emphasizing – which is unusual as well. Pegacorn seemed more unique to me (by memory)!

Connie Avatar

So please forgive me for my ignorance, but would you basically use this INSTEAD of a blush? I guess I always thought of highlighters as being used in addition to a blush!

Christine Avatar

You could use this instead of blush, or you could layer it with a blush. It can really depend on your skin tone, as deeper skin tones need highlighters more like these so that they can get sheen without the product turning ashy/chalky on them! 🙂

Connie Avatar

my coloring is quite similar to yours! So I could, say wear it with clinique pansy pop or plum pop? would you layer right on top or wear it a bit higher up like a normal highlighter?
