Jade (05)

Clarins Jade (05) 4-Color Eyeshadow Palette ($43.00 for 0.1 oz.) includes three more greenish-leaning shades with a deeper, contrasting navy blue. All four shades had some shimmer, to them, though they were more satin-to-pearl with finer shimmer that looked more like a soft sheen once applied and blended out on skin. They had semi-opaque to opaque coverage that lasted for eight hours for the most part, though this was nowhere near the 12-hours claimed.

Jade #1

Jade #1 is a medium pewter with subtle, warm undertones and a sparkling sheen. It had mostly opaque pigmentation with a soft, moderately dense consistency that picked up well with a dry brush but applied more smoothly with a fingertip or a dampened brush as a dry brush yielded light fallout. It wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Formula Overview

-

The formula is supposed to have "intense color payoff" and be "crease-proof" for 12 hours. Most shades had semi-opaque to opaque coverage, while a few shades--often those with more shimmer--tended to be sheerer compared to the more matte shades.

The consistency felt almost cream-to-powder, as the formula felt more emollient and velvety to the touch without being powdery, which made most of the textures firmer compared to a lot of other formulas on the market. For the most part, this translated to application that didn't have any fallout and was blendable, but it sometimes required using a slightly heavier-handed approach to pick up product evenly or to get fuller coverage (if desired).

They did not last 12 hours on me, though, which is on the upper end of wear time I've gotten out of any powder eyeshadow. Most of the shades lasted between eight and nine hours with a few being shorter-wearing than that range.

Jade #2

Jade #2 is a very light green with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that seemed to “melt” a bit once applied to my skin, so it sat well. The texture was soft, smooth, and blendable without being too powdery or too firmly pressed into the pan. It stayed on nicely for seven and a half hours before fading a bit.

Jade #3

Jade #3 had more of a blackened, navy blue base with lighter navy blue and mid-tone blue pearl that gave it a soft sheen. It had opaque pigmentation, but the texture was firmer and a little stiff to work with, so it took a heavier hand to pick up product evenly. It blended out better than I expected based on the feel of it in the pan, but it could have been easier to diffuse. This shade lasted decently for eight hours before fading visibly.

Jade #4

Jade #4 is a light-medium olive green with muted, warm undertones and a pearl sheen. It had rich color coverage that adhered evenly to bare skin and blended out without difficulty. The consistency was soft, smooth, and velvety with a firmer press, though it wasn’t stiff to work with. It wore well for eight hours before showing signs of wear.

I love the details in you reviews and the swatches. I really miss seeing your actual application. Did you stop for as reason? I imagine the constant application and removal might be hard on delicate eye skin.

Hi Susan!

Earlier in the year, I primarily tested eye makeup above my lower lid and not so much in a look, just purely for blending/wear but not blended into a cohesive look as I pretty much teared up all the time due to losing my dog. I’m still doing that some days, depending on the week and where I am with my grief as it ebbs and flows.

Helene Avatar

It takes time before you stop tearing up when suddenly seeing a spot you remember from something related to the missed one.
I lost my young miniature schnauzer Friday the 14th and I’m such a mess. I can’t even think of using makeup.
I have lost dogs before, but you forget over the years how hard it is. It takes a long time till you can remember and just smile at the warmth of the memory.
Take care Christine, and sorry I kidnapped your post, Susan.

Christine Avatar

Definitely! It’s not as bad now as it was, but boy, it is sooo unfun to tear up and then have all that makeup in my eyes, which makes it worse, LOL. I found applying it sort of half-way on my lid and higher, then I could get teary (not full-on sobbing) and keep the makeup intact vs. destroying it. Had to find a way to test all those eyeshadows even in a sad time!

I’m sorry for your loss, Helene! They are easy to love, so hard to lose, and leave permanent pawprints on our hearts ❤

I bought this little quad as soon as it came out and I absolutely love it. I was pleasantly surprised by the intensity of the colors (I had expected some more semi-sheer shades from Clarins) and the ease of blending. The shades are perfect for a cool toned silvery/green look with a hint of navy to deepen.

Genevieve Avatar

I love, love and love this little quad and I am not put off by the shorter wear time at all. I like the inclusion of the navy blue, wish it was a little better in quality, but adore the shade. Needless to say I do have dupes for these colours, but having them in in one handy little compact quad is perfect for me.

I looked at this the other week at Shoppers Drug Mart and nearly got it but then talked sense to myself in that I’ve so many green eyeshadows and green-based palettes that I don’t really need this. Just more “brain clutter” but I found the dark shade – almost a navy/teal – really interesting. I may well still cave and buy this. I very much enjoy the Clarins eyeshadows I already own.
