The Velvet Matte finish is supposed to have “intensely rich color” (in “one stroke” even!) for “full coverage” and has a “soft touch matte finish.” It is also supposed to have “non-drying comfort” for lips and have an “excellent appearance without feathering” for four hours (that’s a nice, reasonable claim). I purchased four shades–one of this finish, one of the Sheer Voile, and two of the Satins, reviews to come–and this was the first one I tried. I decided to buy one of the deeper shades in the range, because these types of colors are often problematic, so it would be a good test whether the formula was really superior to others on the market or not. The consistency was lightly creamy and didn’t tug on the lips, and it was easy to apply straight from the tube without streaking, as there was some slip. Coverage was good but not fully opaque and there was a veil of translucency. It was comfortable to wear, neither drying nor hydrating, but it pulled into lip lines within an hour and a half of wear. The color lasted for six hours in all, left a stain behind, and I didn’t experience any feathering/bleeding. The formula has a rosy scent to it, and I tasted the perfume periodically for the first two to three hours of wear. Ultimately, it performed a lot like other similar-hued shades.

Each lipstick is housed in a glossy, black cardboard box with a red velvet shell that holds the lipstick, sheer, silk case, and the lipsticks have a shimmering, gold ribbon that loops around the top. The ribbon has two crimped ends, and you’re supposed to simply tie them into a knot, but I wish it had some sort of clasp for better hold. It has moderate heft; not as heavy as Guerlain’s Rouge Gs but certainly not so light that it feels “cheap.” They don’t stand up, and they don’t have the shade name printed on them at all; there is a number printed on the interior tube, but the numbers aren’t readily available online. The packaging itself has a lot of details, and it’s a unique shape and style relative to what we see on the market, but I imagine you have to appreciate the packaging to justify the rest of it. I wish they stood up, because then you could really display them (like the polishes), or perhaps if the top was a removable cover, rather than a lid on a “hinge,” then you could remove the cover and display in the boxes.

Pretty dark berry shade but a bit too dark for me. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the other 3 are ones I was considering. I called my local Sephora and they do not have the CL lipsticks and are not getting them. The closest store that carries them is somewhere between 90-100 miles away from me. Normally I’m a risk taker when buying cosmetics but $90 is a lot to chance when you’re just not sure what the shades look like from the tiny pictures on a sales website! Thanks for your review!

Melissa Avatar

For $90 it should be a unicorn of a shade and the formula should be outstanding. The shade is beautiful though. I’ll be looking at buying one of the dupes.

Katherine T. Avatar

Thanks so much for buying and reviewing these!! I’m sure your wallet is hurting. The packaging is a lot prettier than in the promo pics, but it looks kind of big to hang around the neck. The B+ is pretty good for this kind of vampy color, but at this price point, it has to score an A and be a more unique color. Since it doesn’t stand on its own, maybe you can hang on wall as wall art? Hey we need to find multiple uses for this to justify that $90 price tag 😉

Paige Avatar

Somehow I thought of baubles on Christmas trees when I read your suggestion… Haha! If you end up collecting a few, they can probably fit onto a table sized tree… =)

xamyx Avatar

I have DS lipsticks in this range that look just as good, if not better… It’s pretty, but at this price, there has to be *something* that makes it superior to any other, but from what I can tell, there isn’t.

Alice Avatar

While it’s generally hard to justify spending that much on something that didn’t get an A, for me the packaging makes it worth it. I’m a sucker for art deco so I’m totally picking up this and the sheer voile Rouge Louboutin during the VIB end-of-the-year sale.

Also I have a black satin cord with a lobster clasp, so on days I use this lippie I’ll wear it on that cord 🙂

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

Alice – awesome idea! In all the excitement around this release, my addled brain wasn’t thinking about the end of year sale. Since they are not LE, they should be available then. I collect interesting cosmetic packaging so this strikes a chord with me. I still haven’t narrowed down the 5 shades I’m considering though.

Wednesday Avatar

I’m liking your vision with the black cord. For some reason while I’ve been completely adverse to the nail product, I think I have to get one of these lipsticks for similar reasons. I want to wear it, particularly a black tube. I’m 5’10” tall, so if the packaging is on the large size, it would only make it more fitting for my stature.

Susan Avatar

It would have been awesome if they made the packaging with a mirror built in, under the cap or something, so you could wear it and touch up on the go.

Andrew Avatar

Price tag aside, the tube itself is pretty inconvenient. No shade name, no way to stand it up properly without a lipstick organizer, and I’m sure it will collect prints like nobody’s business. I am a total packaging nut and love the intricacies in it, but of all people a shoe designer should know it’s in poor taste to eschew functionality for aesthetics. As for the product itself, sounds to me like it was pretty unremarkable with nothing major breaking it out from similar shades from other brands.

Audrey Avatar

You totally got the exact same lipstick I got. It just arrived in the last ten minutes. I bought mine with gift cards. It is a bit bulky for a necklace to me, but super nice formula upon initial impression.

BonnieBBon Avatar

Hi Rachel 🙂 You probably already know this but Ulta is going to be having the tf la creme lipsticks for $11 ( 50% off warms my heart ) during the 21 days of beauty this month. I know I’m going to be picking up the shades you mentioned that I don’t have since we are so simpatico. You had mentioned wanting pink chocolate and I am positive you’ll love it, such an easy to wear perfect daily work horse but Uhhh prettier than work horse sounds lol I’m blanking on the other shade we talked about …its 2am insomnia rears its ugly head. Anyway, when I saw that deal in the monthly ad I thought of you right away! I hope you’re having a happy and safe long weekend!! ~~~Bonnie

Rachel R. Avatar

Thank you for the info, Bonnie! That’s so sweet of you. That is a great price! I’ll have to see if I get lucky and snag Pink Chocolate. Sometimes those specials are a bugger to to get. lol

Veronica Avatar

With a lipliner, it should be fine, but for $90, the formula should be a slam dunk. The packaging is lovely, but I feel like I’d be liable to drop it more easily than a cylindrical tube.

Lisa Avatar

Here’s a silly question – would it work as a necklace? Do you have dimensions? Could you possibly post a picture of you holding it in your hand for a reference of scale? And would the cap stay securely on if you did wear it as a necklace?

Nicole Avatar

Yeah, for this kind of color, with a satin a ten satin finish -if you have it an A or higher, I may have considered saving up. It seems impossible to find. But, the first time I bought a Rouge G or Tom Ford ,thought that was extravagant. Now I order 2 or 3 at a time. I’m not sure if I want to even go here. Know what I mean? I appreciate you reviewing these and buying. I was certainly curious!

helen Avatar

You are my hero, Christine for doing all the heavy-lifting especially when it comes to these out-of-price-range (for me) products.
I’m thrilled (is that selfish???) that i can sleep soundly tonight knowing that i’m perfectly content with my NARS Train Bleu. Thanks for saving me oodles of (Canadian) dollars on this one.
Now, i have to wait (im)patiently for the review on the satin finish.
Have an amazing Labour Day weekend!

Aditi Avatar

Oh wow. If I’m going to be shelling out $90 for a lipstick it better be able to be my personal superhero or something (jk). Kind of disappointing to see that you’re shelling out for just the packaging :/

Victoria Avatar

I don’t know if it’s me, but it looks like it photographs beautifully – Christine, your lips look so velvety and rich! It’s a beautiful lippie on you!

Martha Avatar

I had kinda set my heart on getting a couple of these (this one, and the Louboutin red matte as well) and this has sealed the deal! The fact is is a Prince Noir dupe is also a good thing!

Elena Avatar

As always, thank you for your review! This looks like it requires a lip liner and it is not as polished as I would have expected. It is not uncommon for darker shades to need a little help, but totally unacceptable for a luxury product. Also, I know I am the only person, but that asparagus looking end on the tube is majorly creeping me out. I couldn’t bring myself to use that thing. Between the price, formula and the asparagus – it’s a safe pass.

Eliz Avatar

This is a very vampy shade that looks great on you, for sure! The rosy and perfume-y scent/taste will likely make this whole line a no-go for me. I keep looking at the sheer voile shade, Rose du Desert, but, even if I adored the color, I wouldn’t be able to take a heavy rose/perfume scent and taste :\

Thanks for the very detailed and timely review! Your photos are excellent!

Marissa Avatar

looks like a lovely color, thank you v much for reviewing them 90$ each sounds heartbreaking, i was expecting a ‘temptalia recommends’ A++++++++++++ for that shocking price, i have a few similar ones tho. the packaging is outstanding i wish they could stand by themselves.

Christine Avatar

The taste is a total deal-breaker for me personally, so unless it was the most amazing color to me personally, I don’t think I’d give it a “Temptalia Recommends.” I’m also pretty hesitant to do so on anything that doesn’t feel “worth it” to me at this price point (I don’t want to unduly influence anyone thinking they NEED it or else).

Drea Avatar

At first I totally thought the ribbon was so people would use them as ornaments on Christmas trees. I actually don’t mind the packaging. I figure anyone paying that much won’t mind not being able to stand it up alone. Plus, many people use lipstick organizers, and I can’t see why this wouldn’t work in those too. Doesn’t luxury usually ask us to make some sacrifices, price or otherwise? These lipsticks aren’t for me, but I still appreciate how different the packaging is. I’d be interested in seeing how people incorporate these into fashion looks!

Mimi Avatar

I display my CL lipsticks in an acrylic square block with 9 deep round shaped holes. There are also smaller round holes that hold the lip pencils (I only bought one, Maya). Got this acrylic holder at The Container Store years ago but I’m sure something similar would be available at Bed, Bath and Beyond, or Target, or anywhere that would have storage items for organizing you bathroom, or desk etc.

Nancy T Avatar

Hypothetically: *If* I were to ever buy one, and I have zero intention of doing so, it would absolutely need to be A+ material and then some for $90. But lip-liney and cannot stand it upright? An even bigger “No”.

All that said, I will say that this entire look came together fantastically on you! I love how the eyeshadow and blush shades compliment the lipstick here, it’s GENIUS!

kellly Avatar

It’s pretty and an unusual color but for $90 I think it should score at least A+++. Besides that for $90 I can get a lot of other stuff not just a single lipstick. I don’t see any of these in my future, but thanks for the review. It looks really pretty on you.

Liz Avatar

Helpful review. I’m concerned about the scent and taste since reading, including yours, criticism of these. They look lovely, though, in some of the shades and satin finishes.

Dany Avatar

Yeah, nope. I actually love the color but I just don’t think I could ever spend $90 on a lipstick. It would have to be ultra-flattering shade, that was unique and has great formula.

Lacey Avatar

For $90, it better be a portkey to Hogwarts! But really, I don’t foresee my budget (or conscience!) allowing for such a pricey lipstick. Especially not for less than excellent formulas.

The packaging is pretty, but it looks like a Christmas ornament to me.

Swathi Narumanchi Avatar

Lovely color on you Christine, though it’s a tad bit vampy for me.

Different folks, different strokes. I have extremely dry lips, sometimes flaky skin on the lips as well. And I got Bengali in the matte finish, and applied it directly on my dry lips. For me, it did not tug, or emphasize the dryness, instead it looked really plump and healthy. Very velvety and nice. And I’ve also tried the Urban Decay/Charlotte Tilbury mattes, and infact they settle more into my lip lines than this. KVD is the only matte which seems better than this, but that’s a liquid matte with a total flat finish.

Anyway, this color makes quite a statement and I always envy you for your ability to carry off the most gothic of shades ! 🙂

Stacey Avatar

You are so lovely to have bought this. I wanted this color. But I could not choose. And I don’t like to buy without swatching.
Now I have. Sense what this product is like. Did you buy other colors?

Christine Avatar

I bought four in total! I really couldn’t justify the cost of buying all, and even four wasn’t really justified, but with the three different finishes, it was hard not to buy at least three – and since there were twice as many satins, I felt like I should try two to test for consistency.

Chellie Avatar

GASP! Such a beautiful color! I really think that this kind of deep shade only gets an average of B+ for performance. I might get the Rouge Louboutin Matte for the difference of packaging. And I’m eyeing on a LOT of Satin colors in their range! Excited for your review! I’m really hoping that the Satin formula gets an A, it’s my favorite formula even with MAC! 🙂

Samar Avatar

Great minds think alike :). I just ordered same color before looking at your post. I thought to order a dark color instead of nude. The price tag is high, this would be my collector piece, don’t mind wearing it on my neck lol

Megan Avatar

Thank you so much for reviewing these! These babies are NOT cheap, so thanks for taking one for the team and doing a review. If one of the other shades gets an A+ Temptalia Recommends rating, I might ask for one for Christmas. Or wait for a sale…

Rachael Avatar

I love the idea that this is wearable and therefore the casing makes it presentable in that sense. I’m a big fan of Guerlain because they put so much thought and effort into their cases. I’m torn on this. For the price it should be scoring an A and frankly it’s not matte enough for my tastes. Maybe I’ll like one of the other shades more and be able to rationalize the purchase a little more. Thanks for the review!

Kaydee Avatar

The lipstick looks like a Christmas tree ornament. These are a pass for me, i would rather have three good lipstick colours. On another important note, your eye makeup is amazing here!!!

KK Avatar

I can’t wrap my head around 90$ for a lipstick – no matter how gorgeous the packaging is. And anyways, at 90$ i would want it to sing sonnets for me, not score a B+. Im happy my wallet is safe.

Lisa Avatar

I was at Neiman Marcus a couple of days ago playing at the new CL display. It was easy to see the really unique lipsticks of this collection are the mattes. The lipstick you are wearing today looked stunning on a black woman standing next to me trying on shades. She bought one in every finish in that shade as well as a matching lip liner.. I could not believe how amazing matte lipsticks felt. Even a couple hours later when I rolled my lips together they felt soft and supple I had no feathering (and this is something I worry about since I DO have some vertical lip lines). I pulled the trigger on the only matte fuschia in the line. The perfect bright pink with blue undertones. Makes my teeth look super white. The lipsticks were literally flying off the shelves! Definitely different from my beloved Tom Ford a step up because it was creamier.

Melissa Avatar

I’m all for spending money on top-notch quality makeup (Nars Audacious, YSL Touch Eclat, you get the point(, but $90 for a tube of lipstick? Not even a foundation or powder? But one tube of Lipstick? That’s insane to me. But as usual Christine, the color is gorgeous on you,

Can you please tell me if these are anything like the TF mattes, I have never loved a lipstick like I do TF and if these are anything like it they might be worth it :), Thank you for your time XO
