Chanel Noir Petrole & Mat Taupe Stylo Yeux Eyeliners Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Noir Petrole (931)
Chanel Noir Petrole (931) Stylo Yeux Eyeliner ($33.00 for 0.01 oz.) is a deep black with subtle, olive brown undertones and a fine, satin sheen. It looked a lot more complex in the swatch photo than I could really see in person as an eyeliner on my lower lash line, though.
The Stylo Yeux formula is supposed to be a “waterproof, smudge-proof” eyeliner with a “gentle, soft” texture. I gave up on this formula bit ago, as the majority of shades I had tried had a really firm, stiff, and painful-to-use texture, but I happened to receive one shade as a press sample, figured I’d give it a shot, and was pleasantly surprised. It was much, much creamier–so much so that I purchased the other shade in the collection. The texture was creamy without being too wet, so it didn’t transfer or migrate easily. Noir Petrole had semi-opaque coverage in one stroke, but it was buildable to opaque coverage in two layers. It was easy (and not painful!) to use even on my waterline. The eyeliner was still going strong after ten hours of wear.

LELimited Edition. $34.00.
Mat Taupe (932)
Chanel Mat Taupe (932) Stylo Yeux Eyeliner ($33.00 for 0.01 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark taupe-brown with warmer undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was creamy, smooth, and easy to glide across the lower lash line. It had semi-opaque coverage in one pass, which was buildable to nearly opaque coverage in two layers, but it seemed to be more emollient so it moved a bit as I layered it to greater opacity. The eyeliner wore well for eight and a half hours on me before thinning slightly.

I personally have always loved the Stylo Yeux formula. I must have a steel waterline! For me, they do not transfer and wear all day without smudging or migrating. I usually pick up new colors if they are significantly different than any that I already own. I think I have close enough dupes for Noir and Matte Taupe looks a little to warm for my preference so going to pass on these so that I can get other pieces from the collection, shadow quads, blush and a lipstick.
The texture of these two was quite different from the others I’ve tried – they have felt more like dried out eyeliner in the past to me!
So glad these received good reviews. This is my eyeliner of choice and I’ve purchased about 12 shades since discovering it 2 years ago. It works great under and over the lash line and stays put in my watery waterline.
Well, at least now I understand why some really liked it, lol!
Oh so glad you gave the Chanel Stylo Yeauxs another try ! I’ve only been buying them since 2014, so they must’ve re-formulated for the better. I now have 4 of them, and they are all awesome — pigmented, creamy, last 12-16 hrs with primer on my super oily lids. These 2 particular colors aren’t that unique, but others have been. The most unique color is probably Eros (true red), sadly LE, have 2 of them, crazy pricey but no regrets. Since I have dupes, I will pass on these, but they will get me on the quad anyway
Now I am regretting not trying the last one they sent as a sample, LOL!
Glad to hear they work so well for you 🙂
Eros is not limited edition thankfully. I only discovered it a few days ago and I’ll keep on purchasing it forever. It looks so amazing against blue eyes, I don’t know how I lived until now without such a colour on my waterline instead of the ubiquitous brown or black. And yes, the formula of these pencils is amazing. The first ever which resists a decent amount of time on my oily lids ( with primer) and very watery waterline. And so creamy! Also amazing pigmentation. Full marks from me 🙂
Oh maybe they made Eros permanent?? Sounds awesome. Yes, I’ve known 5 people who have purchased it, everyone raves about it, and a couple of us (including me) purchased backups. They should keep making that forever, such a hard color to dupe, and the formula is bulletproof even on my super oily lids, very important for a red eyeliner. Thanks for the info!
Yes, at least in Ireland Eros is part of the permanent range. I think the other one from last year’s fall collection, Agape I think it was called, that one was limited edition. Which I’m not too sad about because it wasn’t half as interesting as Eros. And such a good name too, because the pencil provides anyone with a really sultry, sensual look. Very hot!
Yay! I ordered Noir Petrole sight unseen (along with Codes Subtils) so I’m thrilled to see this high grade (and swatches that confirm I’m excited about the dark olive tones).
I’ve tried a few of the Stylo Yeux and they have varied in quality — but oh my, the colors!
YES, Ruby! The ones I have tried in the past… majority were SOOO dry that they were painful to use. Not at all like these two!
Noir Petrole is definitely my type of liner. It really reminds me of my Sephora Contour Pencil in Diving In Malaysia quite a lot! In fact, I was super surprised not to see it as a dupe listed. But because it is close enough I guess I’m okay with not getting Noir Petrole. I’d likely much rather get MAC Blitz & Glitz as that would make for a great upper lashline wing with some pizazz!
Blitz & Glitz is the closest, IMO!
This is my HG eyeliner formula! Love them??
What are your favorite shades?
I know what you mean about the eyeliners. When I picked up Agape and Eros from the fall collection the formula seemed different – in a very good way
A product has to be pretty bad for me to be like, “Nope, no more!” LOL!
Noir Petrole is lovely!
It is!
I love the Stylos, too, because I use them to tightline — between the lashes. I find them easy to control, so I don’t get too much product going everywhere. I don’t use them as a liner above the lashes.
What are your favorite shades, Anne?
I only have 3, but would like more: Noir Intense, Ebene and Cassis. I forgot to mention that they’re great to dot between the lower lashes when you want a soft, but thicker lower lashes look (and often pair it with a lighter, powder eyeshadow color to the outer V). The wear time on the Stylos are incredible.
The first one looks pretty in the closeup of the tip, but nothing special swatched. The taupe just looks like a somewhat warm medium brown, I don’t see anything that makes it taupe. I hope it didn’t come with the smushed tip!
Noir Petrole is more interesting in a macro shot, but it is more like a black-brown with a little shine on the actual lash line.
I have a few Chanel eye pencils and have not been disappointed with any of them. My fave has always been the LE Rose Platine. Lately, however, I have stashed all of my Chanel pencils away, in favor of the MJB high liners. I especially love O vert and Stone fox. They really accentuate green or blue eyes .
Over half of my MJB liners dried out 🙁 I actually threw away a lot of them recently!
Oh, that’s not good! How old were they??
A year or so 🙁
i am so excited to try these on my waterline because i can’t find an eyeliner that lasts there !
Fingers crossed for ya, Claire!
Never tried this formula, but I want to.
It seems worth trying if you happen to be near a Chanel counter!
I really like the look of Noir Petrole but I’m loathe to spend $33 (perhaps considerably more in Canada) on an eye liner pencil (says the woman who lashes out a ridiculous amount for Marc Jacobs skinny liner and Brownout regular liner).
I feel like between the MJB and Brownout, you could skip Noir Petrole – wait for something a little more interesting 🙂
I have a dud from about a year ago that was really dry but overall I love these eyeliners. They last all day for me and I get compliments when I wear most of them (esp Pomme de Pin). These two, new ones are going on my wishlist.
I had the unfortunate experience of the majority being super dry in the past! 🙁
Noir Petrole is beautiful. I’m not liking how yellow Mat Taupe is, though.
