Chanel Mysterio (102) Illusion d’Ombre Eyeshadow

Chanel Mysterio (102) Illusion d’Ombre Eyeshadow ($36.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a bright, metallic silver that runs neutral-to-warm-toned. Kat Von D Moonshine (LE) is cooler-toned. Make Up For Ever ME202 Iceberg Blue (P, $21.00) is lighter, cooler-toned. Ulta Silver (P, $10.00) is lighter. MAC A Waft of Grey #2 (P, $21.00) is similar. Sleek MakeUP Pretty in Paris (LE, $9.99) is brighter. NARS Interstellar (P, $25.00) is cooler-toned. Giorgio Armani Silver Chafer (35) (LE, $33.00) is darker. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Starlet #6 (P) is cooler-toned. Maybelline Silver Strike (P, $6.99) is cooler-toned. MAC Extra Silver (LE, $19.50) is similar. Chanel Infini (P, $29.50) is lighter. Chanel Fantasme (P, $36.00) is lighter, whiter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

It has a very mirror-like metallic sheen applied to the lid, as it is incredibly reflective. The texture was soft, smooth, and blendable, so it was easy to apply it all-over the lid and blend out the edges. I applied it with a flat, synthetic concealer brush and used the edges of the brush to soften the color extending past the crease. The color payoff was mostly opaque, but it seemed buildable. It also sheers out nicely if you prefer a wash of shimmer rather than full coverage. On me, the eyeshadow lasted for ten hours before creasing, but there was some shimmer fall out over time.

When I’ve seen “silver”, I’ve thought meh, it’s not my cup of tea. But this swatches beautifully and the look is simple but gorgeous, so maybe…

I like this. But it is quite dupable. i see a nice MUFE dupe in there actually! I am loving the new spring Tom ford cream I just got and I wish I would have got in on the platinum at Holiday! So now I have been thinking I would love to revive some of my dried up cream shadows and invest in some new cream shadow. If you know how to help dried creams, feel free to share..anyone :)! This one will go on my thinking list since it did get a good grade. But, form past experience I don’t wear a ring of silver well. I do better in golds generally. Silver is just better in the inner corner or in small doses for me. So, powder may be better and easier for me. With all the other products in the collection not doing too well, I got scared on the lipstick and decided to forgo unless I see some good reviews. But, rarely do I find a thorough reviewer other than you. Thanks for the review!

Hey Nicole,

I haven’t tried to revive any in a long time, but I like EnKore Makeup for DIY stuff – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ErFV_zRuRM

In general, I have heard people have had good luck with eye drops (you normally see Visine mentioned), glycerin, or a mixing medium. Inglot Duraline worked really well, but it doesn’t seem to be available any more.

Nicole Avatar

Great! I just bough some Duraline from Beautylish about a month ago which I use to make gel liner from shadows..I didn’t even think to try using that! Thank you! I have a ton of old Benefit and Color tattoo’s that i will try to revive..Not the same caliber as that Tom Ford..I am now ruined for other eye cream shadow fro sure! I hope he releases some for summer! After reading about the beauties you have from the past summer collections, I can only imagine how gorgeous they are!

Very pretty colour! I don’t wear silver often, so I’m not sure if I am going to get this given how expensive these are. Hmm, decisions, decisions!

Allison Avatar

Wow! That is gorgeous! Reminds me of the paint pot Dangerous Cuvee by MAC only this is more silver in color. I really love cream shadows for their longevity and opacity on my lids. I hate the fallout that can happen, have you found any tricks to avoid that? I don’t put primer down first because I don’t find they crease, but can that help?

Allison Avatar

That’s a good idea! Maybe I’ll try that and see if that helps me out. I love Dangerous Cuvee! It has that silver meets gray meets purple aspect to it and I had to buy it as soon as I saw it. I only get bummed about shimmer falling on my cheeks as it wears throughout the day, but if I can get that to stick better, it would be awesome! Thanks for the tips!

Nicole Avatar

Hi..not to intrude. But, I have the Too Faced glitter glue and I have used it with some Colourpop shadows which I was having significant fallout issues with and it helps so much! If you sign up for Too Faced website’s email’s, they will send you occasional discount codes. I have redeemed (2) 20% codes in about 3 weeks. They do charge shipping ( I think $5-6 if you spend under $50 though) . So you may just want to go with Sephora or Ulta if that is the only Too faced item you want to get. hope that helps!

Allison Avatar

No intrusion at all! Thank you for the tip! I nearly caved and bought it and a few other things during the 20% off sale they were having over the weekend but I talked myself out of it. Glad to hear a positive review over the glitter glue! I will sign up and see if they send me any good deals! 🙂

I wish i could say I had been strong. I restocked my lip primer and bought one of the new glossy lip primers and the sweethearts bronzer/blush duos because I’m a sucker for sales and packaging. 🙂 Plus, too faced is really good about returns too if it’s within 30 days. Yeah, sign up! I love the melteds and wound up getting just about all of them for $16 each..not bad.

Allison Avatar

I signed up and got a 20% off code so I ended up caving and ordering the glitter glue and the chocolate bar palette. I’ve wanted that palette for a year and have resisted, I really regretted not taking advantage of the sale so here’s my second chance! I am really impressed with Two Faced, I love the natural eyes palette and their hangover primer, so I have a feeling I’ll enjoy the chocolate bar palette and the glitter glue. It was just slightly over the cost of the palette with the discount, too! 🙂 Ever since starting a blog, I have been so bad about saying “it’s for the good of my blog!!” Haha! Thanks again for the tip!

Nicole Avatar

You wont regret the chocolate bar palette. It’s great. The Semi-Sweet,I don’t like quite as much. You are welcome on the tip. Always happy to help a fellow beauty lover out. I subscribed to your Youtube channel btw!I am so un- tech savy and don’t really follow google plus. If you wind up on Bloglovin’ or have an email subscribe possibility, lmk. i will be happy to support you! 🙂

Nicole Avatar

Yeah! No need for the “shout out” though!I will have to subscribe to you there too! I love Bloglovin’! It’s so nice as a reader to be able to see all your favorite blogs in one place. Congrats!

Hi Christine- what are your thoughts on the shelf life of the Illusion d’Ombre Eyeshadows? I have quite a few of the colors and honestly has dried rather quickly. Application/formula is so different (spongy rather than creamy). I see that someone had asked re: reviving cream shadows. Do you think that your suggestion would work on the Chanel Illusion d’Ombre?

Christine Avatar

Hi Jennifer,

All of mine are fine, and they’re from the original debut! I store mine upside down, and obviously I don’t use them often, so I don’t open/close them regularly. I have no idea if it would work on Chanel’s formula – I don’t think I’ve ever tried it with any formula, it’s just what others have recommended.

Jennifer Avatar

It is the strangest thing. Its like they just shrink in their containers. I have the original ones as well. perhaps i have to store them upside down. i don’t use too often either so who knows. thanks!
