Chanel La Precieuse (317) & La Desiree (327) Rouge Allure Velvet Matte Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Chanel La Precieuse (317) Rouge Allure Velvet Matte Lipstick
Chanel La Precieuse (317) Rouge Allure Velvet Matte Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a vibrant, medium-dark blue-based red with a matte finish. It had rich, opaque color coverage, and the color glided on evenly and smoothly fairly well. It wore well for seven and a half hours, but it was drying on me. MAC Glam (DC, $15.00) is similar. MAC RiRi Woo (LE, $15.00) is darker, more matte. NARS Dragon Girl (P, $25.00) is also darker. NARS Luxembourg (P, $25.00) is similar. MAC Ronnie Red (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC MAC Red (P, $15.00) is similar. Guerlain Calligraphy #5 (LE) is pinker. Dior Marilyn (LE, $36.00) is similar. Chanel Rouge Byzantin (LE, $34.00) is less matte. See comparison swatches.
La Desiree (327) Rouge Allure Velvet Matte Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a deeper, medium-dark red with subtle neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage, and it applied evenly and smoothly with just slight drag. It lasted seven and a half hours, but like La Precieuse, I did find it rather drying. MAC Just a Bite (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Deeply Adored (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Charmed, I’m Sure is a touch brighter. (LE, $15.00) See comparison swatches.
This is one of my least favorite formulas, because I find it quite drying over time. Many readers have had great experiences with this formula, and others have had some issues with how drying it is. Chanel touts it as “non-drying” (but not hydrating!), but it’s one of the more painful formulas to test for me. Though both shades wore very long, I can’t wear anything after testing one of these for about a day after–I need a lot of extra TLC to get my lips back into shape after wearing one of these!

I just wanted to say thank you for all you do for us readers! Even though these lipsticks are tough for you to wear, you still do it anyway, all for us 🙂 That is true dedication!
No prob, Virginia!
I am on the hunt for the perfect red, and it’ so hard when there are so many pretty reds out!! And they just keep coming!
Very true – there are a lot of reds to choose from!
These lipsticks are gorgeous (: great post!
Happy to hear you enjoyed it!
Both colors look absolutely stunning on you.
Thank you!!
I’m surprised I don’t see the burgundy color on your lips from La Desireee. Do you have any highend dupes for it (whether matte or not)?
Hi Sue!
I listed all the dupes I could think of in the post! 🙂
Gorgeous 🙂
I love the formula sooooo much 🙂
you are looking stunner dear
Thank you, Rashmi!
The dry texture isn’t worth it, the finish isn’t even very matte!
Yeah, I’m not a big fan of this formula!
Those are gorgeous! I want both of them!
Let me know if you end up trying either, Gao!
Oh my vishnu your skin is AMAZING, so jeaolus. Any different recommendation for us? Many kisses
Thank you, Oksana! I’d try the regular Rouge Allure formula!
I bought La Desiree (327) and it looks soo much darker on me… i expected to be a dupe of just a bite, which i love… but it was just too dark. Sadly, its been returned.
That’s too bad, Jackie! 🙁
Not a big fan of matte lipsticks and to be fair I find every goddamn lipstick I’ve ever tried drying (I only use lip balms), but those looked painful in the bullet’s photos already!!! Yikes.
Oh no! 🙁 If most are drying for you, definitely stay away from these!
They look great on you, Christine! I’m loving both shades. I’m getting La Precieuse because of the name, and La Desiree because I’m crazy for deep reds. Here’s to hoping the finish of these won’t give me trouble. 🙂
That first shade is so bright and pretty! I really wish I could pull off shades like that!
Wow, both of those are stunning reds! Chanel rarely gets it wrong 🙂
Hey Christine, have you ever thought of having guests on your blog of differing skin tones..asian, dark skin women, very pale women to try on the make up too? Just so we can see how it looks on varying skin tones? Not being snarky, it would just be really helpful.
We did try having guest contributors – it ended up not being something that we moved forward with long-term. If you want to see other skin tones, I highly recommend googling for a blogger that matches what you’re looking for! We’re just not at a point where we can hire models or anything like that.
I LOVE both of these!
Hi christine,
Please which is darker between mac ruby woo and le precieuse?
I’ve been hunting for a brighter and less deeper red than ruby woo.
Thanks
La Precieuse, I think!
I do love these colors..
But I have tried other shades from this formula,
they CHIP and CHIP and CHIP! crazy..
So I was thinking to get these 2 or not… 🙁
