Chanel Etienne (446) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as an “intense burgundy red.” It’s a raspberry red with cool, pink undertones and a very soft, micro-shimmer and pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque color coverage, so there was translucency to the color that allowed the natural lip color to come through. The consistency had moderate slip but didn’t feather or bleed. I found the formula lightly hydrating, and the color lasted for four and a half hours on me. Tom Ford Beauty Alejandro (LE, $32.00) is more opaque, less glossy. Revlon Flirtatious (125) (P, $8.99) is glossier, pinker. MAC Love Goddess (LE, $16.00) is more matte, brighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Jean (454) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “deep fuchsia.” It’s a brightened, medium fuchsia magenta with strong, blue undertones and a very fine shimmer and glossy sheen. It had semi-opaque color coverage with a lot of slip, though the texture is thinner so it didn’t feel like it slid everywhere. It didn’t go on as evenly as I expected, even though it’s hard to see the visible streaks. There are a lot of similar shades to this, even with the glossier finish. It lasted for four hours on me. Maybelline Orchid Ecstasy (730) (P, $7.49) is slightly cooler-toned. Urban Decay Sheer Anarchy (P, $20.00) is darker, less cool-toned. Tom Ford Beauty Pablo (LE, $32.00) is brighter. Tom Ford Beauty Jack (LE, $32.00) is more muted, less glossy. Tom Ford Beauty Justin (LE, $32.00) is more shimmery. Urban Decay Crush (LE, $22.00) is brighter. Urban Decay Ladyflower (LE, $22.00) is more muted. MAC Boutique Pink (LE, $22.00) is lighter. MAC Lust Extract (LE, $17.00) is similar. Givenchy Rose Perfecto (209) (P, $36.00) is brighter. MAC Bold Spring (P, $22.00) is a smidgen lighter. L’Oreal Pink Flamingo (180) (P, $8.95) is pinker. NARS Goodbye Emmanuelle (LE, $26.00) is lighter. NARS Full Frontal (LE, $26.00) is more magenta. MAC Playtime (LE, $17.00) is more shimmery, lighter. Marc Jacobs Beauty Happy Ending (116) (P, $30.00) is less glossy. Givenchy Croisiere Fuchsia (309) (LE, $36.00) is darker. Maybelline Electric Fuchsia (LE, $7.49) is brighter, less glossy. Revlon Lollipop (P, $7.49) is sheerer. Maybelline Hot Plum (P, $7.49) is darker, less glossy. Maybelline Fuchsia Flash (P, $7.49) is brighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Erik (456) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “sparkling deep berry.” It’s a muted, medium-dark purple-berry with cool undertones and a soft shimmer and glossy finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a fair amount of translucency, though the deeper color changes the natural lip color noticeably. It pulled into lip lines over time and made them appear darker, as the color gathered there. It applied fairly evenly, but there was still room for improvement. On me, it was lightly hydrating and stayed on well for four hours. Bite Beauty Aubergine (P, $24.00) is warmer. Gucci Beauty Tiger Lily (P, $39.00) is more shimmery. Gucci Beauty Bitter Grape (P, $39.00) is similar. Marc Jacobs Beauty Cabaret (146) (LE, $30.00) is less shimmery. YSL Forbidden Burgundy (12) (P, $34.00) is brighter. Revlon Plum Velour (P, $7.99) is lighter. Marc Jacobs Beauty Little Pretty (130) (P, $30.00) is darker. Too Faced So Berry Sexy (P, $22.00) is lighter, less shimmery. MAC Rebel (P, $16.00) is brighter. Guerlain Flirt (LE, $35.00) is similar. Guerlain Bee (LE, $51.00) is more muted. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Odd formula. It almost looks a little blotchy in the photos (on you). But these shades are all so lovely and I like the slightly sheer effect. My favorites of those you’ve reviewed so far!

Nicole Avatar

Well, I was interested in maybe trying these out. I always hear that for Chanel, they sell lipstick the most. But, after reading your replies, I am thinking maybe better to save towards another formula, you think?

Christine Avatar

I used to love Chanel’s lip products, but I’m not so keen on them. I think other brands have better formulas, too, and not just say, Guerlain Rouge G, which is still a good bit more expensive. Some of Chanel’s colors are nice – like the slightly muted quality of some of the new Rouge Cocos is lovely – but I find myself preferring a lot of other formulas.

Nicole Avatar

I understand. Everybody has their own preferences. I may try one and I am hopefully seeing a Rouge G or two soon to at least try it out. I tend to get a lot of Nars audacious becaue they have done well for me and the price is doable. My wish list is forever long. So, I will keep these in mind. maybe pick one up some day to give it a go.

Thanks for your reply and honesty! I have no way to see these and truly value your “eye’ for these things. I meant Gemma(64). If you have a different selection to start with to get a good feel for the overall collection, feel free to lmk. I may just go for it and swing 3. I noticed Sephora has these 3 in stock at the moment. So, there is the option to return. But,by the description, reviews, and photos, I think these may be addictive for me,lol! Thanks again for your help and helping me to go out of the “comfort zone”. Anastasia actually returned all those 12 lipsticks I returned..so I am using it for something a little more suiting to my lips. I ordered a couple of Burberry lip velvets after I saw one on a friend earlier this week and saw your stamp of approval. So, that should fulfill my “matte” lipstick needs well enough..those are gorgeous! I must have been under a rock to not have seen those!

Christine Avatar

Glad you were able to get your Anastasia products returned!! Let me know how the Lip Velvets work out. I really think it’s a stellar option for a very matte finish without a lot of the pitfalls of matte products. Kind of like MAC Retro Matte but more velvety and comfortable to wear.

I think the three you’ve mentioned–Garconne, Gipsy, Gemma–are fantastic shades. I also like Gracia and Garance for more subdued shades, but when you go Rouge G for the first time, I tend to be of two minds: either get a shade you’d wear all the time, or get a shade that will make you feel amazing every time you wear it for that special occasion.

Nicole Avatar

Great! Thanks for the suggestions! And gosh, I am so happy about the thing with Anastasia too! I was a little surprised..pleasantly!
I will keep you posted on the Burberry’s..hopefully they will be here soon!
🙂

Oh, I was hoping you’d review Erik! I saw it at the counter as I was rushing by and immediately loved it (although I couldn’t figure out if it was too vampy to wear around without trying it on); looks great on you..might have to go back and see if I can pull it off!

Rachel R. Avatar

I knew Erik was too good to be true. I adore the color, but it looks like a typical patchy dark purple. The other two are quite lovely, though.

Nicole Avatar

I really like Etienne! Jean is really pretty, but it is pretty dupable like you said and I am sure I have at least 5 to dupe it. I really like the 2 Chanel lipsticks I have from their initial spring collection. They are the Rouge Velvet (Rouge allure velvet?..something like that?)though. They seem like nothing on your lips..very light. So, I am pretty interested in trying this formula once you finish reviewing the shades. I took 4 years of french between high school and college. I was always drooling over this boy who’s class name was Etienne in my HSS class..I think that memory is greatly influencing my eys here! LOL! As always, thanks for reviewing Christine and the walk down memory lane..your a gem! 🙂

Christine Avatar

It was crazy how dupable Jean was, lol! I was like, “Whoa!!”

It’s worth trying the formula if you like other Chanel lipsticks, and I know that several readers here have commented about how they’ve liked the Rouge Coco formula in general. Could just be me 🙂

Susan Dowman Nevling Avatar

Etienne 446 the only one I liked. Already own the UD. Fish is dupe for 454 Jean. I wear it seldom. Although it is pretty, it’s brighter than my comfort zone.

Melle Avatar

I love Chanel lipstick. Erik looks deep, dark and delicious in the tube, but it doesn’t look very pigmented on the lips. For the price tag, I think I will stick to MAC and Revlon. Jean is also a shade that I would wear (I love blue-toned fuchsia) but again, it is not translating as richly pigmented on the lips. Thanks to you, Christine, this is dupe city. You have given us a lot of alternatives from which to choose.

Raquel Avatar

I love the looks of Jean! I always layer a lip pencil underneath for more coverage — I think Jean would be pretty with Chanel Sonic Pink lip pencil underneath 🙂 I really like the old Rouge Allure formula better than the new one, so I’ll have to see what I think about the new Rouge Coco 🙂
