Chanel Caractere Rouge Coco Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches
Chanel Caractere Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Caractere Rouge Coco Lipstick ($32.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “rose brown.” It is a rosy plum with subtle gold micro-shimmer. There’s a soft, muted quality to the overall color. MAC Offshoot is pinker, redder. MAC Oh Oh Oh is redder and has more obvious gold shimmer. MAC Sophisto is sheerer but similar in color. Clarins Blackberry is a bit darker, less pink. Chanel Stunt is a touch less pink and lighter.
It has full color coverage, and the finish is just barely frosted–a little sheen, a hint of shimmer. The texture is creamy without being thick or slippery–there’s enough give so it slides and doesn’t pull or tug at lips. Rouge Coco isn’t the most hydrating formula I’ve tried, but this particular shade was moderately moisturizing–not drying at all but it felt like I needed hydration shortly after this wore off. Caractere wore for four and a half hours. Chanel’s lipstick is perfume-scented (maybe rose?) but I didn’t detect any taste.

This looks right up my street – I have pigmented lips and am very fair so i steer clear of very brown shades but I am always on the look out for something neutral with a touch of pinkiness to suit my colouring!
@baby in a corner This is exactly that!. However, I would stay away from the lipgloss in Troublant since it comes across much more brown and less plummy rose.
Christine, this colour looks so flattering on your skin tone. 🙂
Haha.. just got this yesterday and hey, it looks fab on you too 🙂 I wish this colour came in one of the longer lasting formulas, but I can cope and I’m happy to see a positive review. Thanks Christine, I’m doing a happy dance!
Gah! I wish I could justify the cost because this color is just perfect.
Pretty but I thought Caractère would be darker. I will probably purchase it, I love the Rouges Coco !
@Dominique33 Hi Dominique: My skin is just lighter than Christine’s and more neutral and this lipstick looks more dramatic on me. I think Christine has a lot of natural lip pigment in the same tone as this lipstick too. It’s worth a try!
I was waiting to see more swatches/reviews of this one before I picked it up. Now I think I’ll get it when I have the chance!
Waaay too Meh for me. I need high drama in my lipsticks, be they light, bright or vampy. This is the epitome of ” Work Safe”, which is practical for many but represents a place where I probably don’t want to work ( because I don’t usually thrive in conservative environs) I guess I believe one could easily find an inexpensive dupe for such a common color?
OOoo, this looks amaze on you! Perfect for everyday/work, I think ;-D
The sort of grey-ish tones I see in this are kind of unappealing to me. I’m afraid this would amplify the (in my opinion) less flattering mauvish grey tones already present in my lips that can make me look cold and unhealthy.
Always nice not to lem an expensive product. 🙂
@yellowlantern Lancome Crushed Rose is very similar, but a bit browner, and quite a bit less expensive. L’Oreal may also have something similar, if you don’t mind the scent/taste (I personally really like them).
@xamyx Yes! I love that color in HS. Although if memory serves its a bit richer, deeper, brown-er? And you read my mind, I automatically thought ” L’Oreal *has* to have a good dupe for that”
@18thCenturyFox I believe it is, but it’s been quite some time for me, as well. They’re in the same famiy, though, and I’ve noticed over the years there is a lot of cross-over in lip shades in L’oreal & Lancome. I wore Crushed Rose in HS & college, but like you, I like a bit more “drama” in my lip colors, too.
So pretty on you! I am really starting to fall for plummy-rose colors–Fall or not! Love this!
oooh, i like this type of color for work. is it at all similar to MAC sweetie?
Sweetie is a bit lighter and pinker 🙂
I have a feeling that I’m gonna have it :3
Ty for sweet review
Great review, as always. What do you think about this color on NC50 skin?
Christine Iam not so sure as I would describe this as a full coverage lipstick. It’s very obviously full coverage on you.. But when I tried this on my pigmented lips, it was translucent. My natural lip color definitely came through quite a bit. I am not sure if this was because I was wearing a lip balm earlier or if my counter had a dud. Maybe someone who also has pigmented lips can comment on it.. But this was semi-sheer at best for me.
@P_riya I have a lip freckle on my lip that is very visible if the lipstick isn’t opaque, but this one completely covers it! 🙂
I always find you look best with these type of colors. It looks really nice on you. Why are these so expensive? I keep lusting after these pricey lipsticks 🙁
it’s really similar with Rouge Coco n°10 “camelia”.
Isn’t true?
@makeuppleasure Camelia seems warm and lighter – but I don’t have it.
This is so lovely. I’m a real sucker for mauve-y plums, and the mircoshimmer here is just so perfectly subtle. Glad to see it’s not LE, though, so I have some time to bide before purchasing it. 🙂
Boooteefullll.
This is such an interesting colour, I don’t have anything like it in my collections. I love it, I’m going to have to go swatch this for myself!
This is such a lovely color! I’m a sucker for mauve/plums/rose colored lips, especially in the fall. If they’re sheer/buildable enough I can wear them all year round. I’ll probably be lusting after this one. 🙂
Christine, did you notice any tiny pieces of glitter migrate to the rest of your face?
Nope!
@Christine-Temptalia Do you have any suggestions? I’ve tried to apply with a lip brush, straight from the tube, blotting, using lipbalm first, using lipliner. I really want to love this l/s…
Oh no 🙁 I really have no idea why you’re getting so much glitter traveling around! It sounds like you’ve done everything!
