Chanel Apparition Illusion d'Ombre Eyeshadow Review, Photos, Swatches
Chanel Apparition Illusion d’Ombre Eyeshadow
Chanel Apparition Illusion d’Ombre Eyeshadow ($36.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a deepened, yet muted, navy blue with blue and purple shimmer for a slightly frosted sheen. NARS Ubangi is bluer. MAC Bleuluxe #4 is darker. Tom Ford Cobalt Rush #2 is similar, slightly lighter, powder. Le Metier de Beaute Sapphire is purpler, powder. MAC Thru the Night is brighter, powder. MAC Naval Blue is lighter, powder. See comparison swatches.
This shade originally launched last fall in the Bleu Illusion de Chanel collection, and by the time I received mine and had tested it, the product was sold out. So it’s sat in my “to review” folder since, and I hoped it might make a reappearance–and sure enough, it finally has. Part of a very small release Jeux de Regard, it’s being repromoted (along with Convoitise), plus two new eyeshadow quads, Fascination and Seduction, and an eyeliner, Bleu Exquis (I don’t have any of the new products). The products are available now at Nordstrom.
Apparition has fairly good color payoff in a single layer, and when it is sheered out, it appears darker, almost sooty. It’s buildable to opaque color. The consistency is like a gel-mousse hybrid, and it feels sponge-like in the container. It’s soft, lightly creamy, and spreads and blends well on the lid. This shade lasted eight hours well on me but showed slight creasing and some noticeable fading around the edges by the ninth hour of wear.

I thought it would look a lot more vibrant and sort of “breathtaking” from how it looks in the pot but it’s a bit disappointing.
That was exactly what I thought!
I have this color and I absolutely love it! When you just pat it on the lid, it is very intense (these pics don’t do it justice). When you smooth it out, it loses the bright -sort of metallic- blue tones and becomes darker (much like these pics). I recommend you check it out in store and try it. The only problem I have with these Chanel eyeshadows (as well as the Buxom Stay-There ones that are similar in texture) is they usually crease on me unless I wear a Mac paint pot underneath.
It’s really pretty!
I wish it looked more blue. If it looked as blue on the eyes as it does in the jar, I’d love it.
I’m a big fan of this formula but this one creased and was so awful I actually threw it away (stupid me, I should have asked Chanel for a refund or an exchange for a different color). I own three other colors in this formula and have never had this problem but this was just really bad for me.
Ha! I didn’t realize Nordstrom had it also. I just happened to see it available for back-order on Chanel’s website and ordered it. I missed out on it last time, I wasn’t going to miss out on it again. I think it would create a simple but sophisticated smokey eye.
I had a similar experience as Luka with this particular eyeshadow. I already have 3 of these Chanel shadows and love them, they are gorgeous and so easy to use. However when I got this one I found it quite crumbly and difficult to use. It was very patchy and I ended up giving it to my teenage niece who tried it and had a similar experience.
I thought this shade was going to be amazing and hard to resist purchasing, but I’m definitely underwhelmed by the pigmentation.
Thought this might be more nuanced. I guess it just falls flat for me and looks like other navy blues in my collection.
such promise in the pot! ๐
What a disappointment! I really hoped that this color will have more pigmentation. I love Chanel Illusion dโOmbre Eyeshadows but this one is a no buy!
