Ocean Jewels

Becca Ocean Jewels Eyeshadow Palette ($35.00 for 0.49 oz.) is a seven-pan, circular palette with five shimmery and two matte eyeshadows. One shade (Mermaid Pearl) is supposed to be an “eyeshadow topper,” which is designed to be sheerer so it can be layered on top of other shades. The palette was a big improvement from holiday’s iteration with respect to quality, and the shades themselves are a bit more complex, too. The palette is larger, and there is wasted space, which I know can be a deal-breaker for some.

Seashell

Seashell is a light, muted beige with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was smooth, velvety, and had enough substance to it to yield opaque coverage on my lid without need for a primer. It was easy to work with and wore well for seven hours on me.

Abalone

Abalone is a light-medium, pinky lavender with warmer undertones and a cooler, bluish-violet sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that wasn’t too soft nor too firm in the pan. It applied well to bare skin and lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Ingredients

Mica, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Talc, Magnesium Myristate, Diisostearyl Malate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Hydrogenated Polycyclopentadiene, Caprylyl Glycol, Isostearyl Alcohol, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Malic Acid, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Hexylene Glycol, Silica, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Phenoxyethanol, Tin Oxide, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Iron Oxides (Ci 77491), Manganese Violet (Ci 77742), Carmine (Ci 75470).

Ocean Jasper

Ocean Jasper is a light-medium, red-brown base with warm undertones and green-to-blue shifting pearl. I’ve seen variations on this type of duochrome before, but this one was a lot lighter than most (and it appeared noticeably lighter in practice than it did in the pan). The pigmentation was opaque, while the texture was smooth, soft, and blendable without being powdery or dry. This shade wore well for seven hours on me.

Tourmaline is a deep, red-toned brown with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. The texture was soft, a little drier to the touch, but it blended out fairly well and was buildable to full coverage with two layers. It stayed on well for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Sandstone

Sandstone is a muted, medium copper with warm, orange undertones and a metallic finish. The color payoff was nearly opaque with a looser, slightly dry consistency that applied decently on its own but needed a primer or a dampened brush to yield really rich, smooth coverage without fallout. It lasted for seven hours on me.

Ingredients

Mica, Talc, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Magnesium Myristate, Diisostearyl Malate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Hydrogenated Polycyclopentadiene, Caprylyl Glycol, Isostearyl Alcohol, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Malic Acid, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Hexylene Glycol, Silica, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Phenoxyethanol, Tin Oxide, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Iron Oxides (Ci 77491, Ci 77499), Bismuth Oxychloride (Ci 77163), Yellow 5 Lake (Ci 19140).

Spirit Quartz

Spirit Quartz is a medium, golden taupe with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It was richly pigmented and had a smooth, lightly creamy texture that was effortless to apply and to blend out on my lid. The color stayed on well for eight hours on me.

Ingredients

Mermaid Pearl

Mermaid Pearl is a pale, white gold with subtle, warm undertones and iridescent shimmer. It had sheer coverage, which was by design, as it is intended to be used as an “eyeshadow topper.” The texture was a little drier and looser, and it applied best with fingertips patted over another product rather than using brushes. It wore well for seven hours on me and had slight fallout over time.

Ingredients

Talc, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Dimethicone, Magnesium Myristate, Isodecyl Neopentanoate, Diisostearyl Malate, Silica, Dimethiconol, Caprylyl Glycol, Isostearyl Alcohol, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Malic Acid, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Hexylene Glycol, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Phenoxyethanol, Tin Oxide, Mica, Ci 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), Ci 77492 (Iron Oxides).

I’m glad this performed much better than the holiday version, but for some reason I just can’t reconcile the colors in the palette with “Ocean Jewels”

Nicole D Avatar

Hm, the name “Ocean Jewels” is reminiscent to me of the summer time, the ocean breeze, the beautiful green and blue shades. The colours in this e/s palette, not so much.
Money saved for the Chanel quad (302 – Première Éclosion) from their Dernières neiges collection.

I know Christine but I still think it’s a missed opportunity for Becca. This palette looks like a mixed bag, some of the shades having an autumnal vibe. They could have used some beautiful shades of turquoise, blue, etc. along with some light ones similar to the capiz shells. That’s just mho 🙂

I may be alone on this one, but I love the soft, sophisticated looks I have created with these! The shadows are very interesting and complex, they wear very differently than they look in the pans.

The promo pics are what really sold it to me – the looks they created on the models are so dreamy!

I really want Becca to grow and do well as a brand, so I’m happy to hear that their shadows have improved over last year’s selection. I probably won’t be buying this palette because I’m pretty sure I already have most of these colours in my selection, but I’m excited to see what they’ll bring out next.
