MAC Moss Definitely & Black Mirror Pro Longwear Paint Pots Reviews & Swatches
Moss Definitely
MAC Moss Definitely Pro Longwear Paint Pot ($23.00 for 0.17 oz.) is a darker, forest green with subtle, warm undertones and cooler, emerald green pearl throughout. The consistency was very emollient, which resulted in a product that was more blendable and spreadable, but it applied unevenly and had sheer coverage that did not want to build up much. I didn’t have improved results despite trying fingertips as well as different types of brushes for application. It started to crease a bit on me after nine hours of wear.

Formula Overview
$23.00/0.17 oz. - $135.29 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to be "highly pigmented, long-wearing, blendable" and can be used as either an "eye primer" or as a "cream shadow." The brand says it's supposed to wear for "24 hours" without flaking or creasing.
The matte finish is most consistent in performance and tended to perform better than the shades with some level of shimmer. The matte shades were lightly creamy to slightly stiffer to work with, and with the stiffer ones, I preferred using a brush to get the initial product out of the jar and then use a fingertip to furiously diffuse the product. The matte shades were typically semi-opaque to opaque in coverage and longer-wearing--12 to 14 hours before showing a bit of fading--but were varying degrees of blendable (related to how creamy the initial texture was).
The shimmery finish, particularly more pearlescent/metallic, were significantly more emollient than the matte shades, and this led to sheerer coverage that often applied unevenly and was difficult to apply with precision. They were best applied in thin layers and built up, but the results were inconsistent and varied a lot between shades. I didn't find that they applied any better using brushes over fingertips or vice versa. The wear of the shimmer shades was shorter, too, and there was often a bit of creasing within 10 hours of wear.
With 24-hour wear claims like this, I wear for as long as I'm awake, but I don't want to sleep in makeup, so I extrapolate based on the state of it at 16-hours. (Plus, it is rare that products actually go as long as 12, let alone 16, hours without some sign(s) of wear.) I don't recall this product having a specific, 24-hour wear claim before (and my prior reviews don't mention it, just that it was "long-wearing"), so ratings did change for certain shades as a result.

Black Mirror
MAC Black Mirror Pro Longwear Paint Pot ($23.00 for 0.17 oz.) is a medium black with neutral undertones and a flat, matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that was buildable, but the texture was drier and stiffer to work with. I’d recommend using a synthetic brush to dig around and get product out, and then use a fingertip to soften the edges.
It would be easier to work with as an eyeliner or applied on the lid for a cut-crease look, as it was just difficult to diffuse the edges as it was almost set as soon as it was in contact with my skin. It wore well for 12 and a half hours before starting to fade slightly, though I didn’t see creasing until after 15 hours of wear; not quite 24 hours, but it seemed like it would have visible product by the end of that time period.

Aww man I brought Moss Green because I thought I could use it as a green eye shadow primer. Doubt if I’d wear it alone. Do you think it could work as a primer. I ordered this but haven’t received it yet.
It might work as a primer! Also maybe as an eyeliner with shadow layered on top!
Oh, I was hoping Moss Definitely would be a winner but I’m guessing the F isn’t for “Fantastic” or “Fabulous”. I thought the pearly finish would be the icing on the cake for me. Oh the sadness…
It’s a Moss Definitely NOT!
…and the F is for FLOP!!! It’s so disappointing because MAC hasn’t had a green Paint Pot (the type that would give the kiss of life to a shadow like Greensmoke!) in ages.
Agreed!
Tacky comment: I’ll take the Sydney Grace…ooops, already did. Looking forward to your collab.
LOL!
Oh no! I had such high hopes for these paint pots, I know how much others have loved the ones in the past….what a let down.
Not sure how Black Mirror compares to, say, Nyx Black Base, but I’d likely try the less expensive alternative? A decent black base can REALLY make a multicrome or less pigmented dark shade pop, so that is something I’m looking at.
Oh, I didn’t think about that usage. Thanks for that idea! The Nyx black eye shadow stick creases on me a lot, and is unusable. Black Mirror might be an alternative.
I have the NYX Black Base in the little pot like container and absolutely love it. It really makes eyeshadow pop when used underneath it. I haven’t experienced any creasing and it dries down nicely. Its a really fantastic product especially for the price.
So I could mix my Moss Definitely with a bit of Black Mirror & have a decent eye shadow?
I wish I had waited for your review before I ordered the MD.
I totally agree with your F, but I will use it as a base & try to make it something fun that way.
These are terribly disappointing. Moss Definitely had such potential. If they can’t get the formula right, they should just keep playing with it until it is. No one should pay (near to) top dollar for this mess.
It’s nearly 24 EURO’s in Europe. 29 dollars US. For 10 euro’s more I can get something similar from Chanel that actually works.
I think that the consistency of the formula on so many of the Paint Pots varies tremendously even within the same shade. I bought Moss Definitely (as well as a few others), and I would probably give it a B or B- at the worst. Mine also goes on sheer but it does built up. I apply all eyeshadows over primer because I have dry eyelids, and Moss Definitely doesn’t crease on me at all. However, it doesn’t apply as opaquely as do the matte Clearwater or Painterly, but it is a heck of a lot better than Silver Screen that I would give an F.
So sad to hear about that green one! I was interested in the Ultraviolet shade, but it’s sold out. However, if it performs anything like the green one I know I’ll be okay without it.
I had high hopes for Moss Definitely, it looks so beautiful in the packaging. But seeing swatches and your review I will pass on this one.
MAC Carbon’s worthy continuer! So frustrating.
Good one!
What a train wreck..
Greens must be hard to formulate, Veruschka from CT was also patchy and disappointing.
