Best & Worst of Urban Decay x Game of Thrones

It’s Saturday, which means it’s time for a round-up! Just finished reviewing all of the products in the upcoming Urban Decay x Game of Thrones Collection, which launches April 14th on Urban Decay’s website (and April 29th at retailers). There’s a lot of overlap in this collection past releases from Urban Decay from the last few years; like nothing about the actual products (as in colors and finishes) feels tailor-made for Game of Thrones. The packaging and names, absolutely, but the color story is lost on me. I would have really loved to have seen four individual palettes if they were going to be inspired by each house, or else I would have enjoyed seeing a palette that drew more from the feelings, stories, and settings of Game of Thrones as well as some of the characters.

Urban Decay’s Vice Lipstick formula is rarely disappointing, which was true in this launch, and the highlighter formula was lovely, though way more pigmented than described (true of most of their highlighter shades, though). The eyeliners were probably the high point for me personally. The eyeshadow palette was a mixed bag but someone who tends to use their more shimmery/glittery eyeshadows with a wet brush will likely find it better.

Hi Christine! I was wondering what one product of this collection you would recommend getting. I’m not really an eyeliner person, but as a fan, I would love to get something else from the collection.

I’d push back and say if nothing is catching your eye / you don’t see anything you’d use, why not consider other Game of Thrones merchandise? Makeup is consumable, and UD isn’t inexpensive, so it just seems like if you’re just getting it for packaging, there might be something else that is Game of Thrones-inspired that is truly focused on presentation 🙂

The only items that got on my radar were the eyeliners; the lipsticks feel like ones UD has released before (and some overlap with the permanent range). The lipsticks have better packaging than the eyeliners if you’re buying solely because of the Game of Thrones packaging.

Thank you for your honest answer! The lipsticks, eyeshadow palette and lip stain did catch my eye, but I’m just not excited about the lip products anymore and very hesitant about the eyeshadow palette. Disappointing! 🙂

I absolutely agree with everything you wrote Christine – it would have been more fitting to have 4 smaller eye palettes, featuring the different GoT houses, with each palette centred around a colour story.
The palette lacked authenticity with the many GoT fans too.
They eyeliners and lipsticks were the best part of the collection – especially Lannister Gold and Censai Lannister lipstick for me.
Thank you Christine.

Lannister Gold liner for sure for me and in spite of my better judgment, I may well get the palette. Yes, it’s unnecessarily bulky; I hate those pop ups (I remember the one from the UD I Love NYC palette – just too gimmicky) and some of the colours look less than great quality but there’s just something about it (I blame the colours Winterfell, Casterly Rock and Winter is Here, as well as Sean Bean, my long-time swoon-guy).

Just an FYI for anyone interested, the Vault will be $195 @ Sephora, which I believe is around,$50 less than UD. Timing will likely be right at or near Sephora Spring sale, so another 15%. I’ll take it! Unless I somehow miraculously talk myself down off that ledge, that is.
All in all, I am okay with the color choices. No, they are not 100% perfect for the story lines, but I do feel that they cover each House fairly well, minus Nymeria (warm brown instead of something grayish? Seriously, UD?), House Targaryen (peach?) and I believe that Lannister Red ought to have been a touch redder.

I’m not a GOT fan so I’m not hurt by what this collection turned out to be. It’s actually what I expected from UD lol. I do think if I get anything, it would be the eyeliners but I’m an eyeliner fan in general!!

Christine, thank you for providing an honest assessment. I’ve been skeptical of the mostly glowing reviews from YT influencers who don’t even watch the show…..”It includes a lip and cheek stain called D R E W C A R E Y S”.
I love both UD and GoT, so this is a hard decision for me. I feel like the entire collection is just repromotes with Game of Thrones slapped on the packaging.
I would use the lipsticks and a couple liners, but the rest would be stashed away in my overcrowded (and underused) makeup collection.

I’m pretty underwhelmed by this collection.

The only exception is for the eyeliners. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why they didn’t release a mini collection of the eyeliners for $25-$30. In order to get them all, you would need to spend $80+, which isn’t affordable, especially for 4 eyeliners.

IMO, this was all ill thought out.
