MAC Charmed, I’m Sure Lipstick
How Many Reds Will You Need?
MAC Marilyn Monroe Lipsticks ($16.50 for 0.10 oz.) includes five shades: Charmed, I’m Sure (dark true red), Deeply Adored (deep scarlet), Love Goddess (mid-tone pink red), Pure Zen (frosted warm nude), and Scarlet Ibis (bright orange red). The latter two are repromotes.
Charmed, I’m Sure is a darkened red with a matte finish. It has subtle blue undertones and opaque color coverage. Guerlain Luxure is slightly darker, a touch browner. MAC Red Racer is brighter. MAC Russian Red is darker. MAC Runaway Red is similar, a smidgen darker. Guerlain Samsara is more blue-based. MAC Ruby Woo is more blue-based.
Deeply Adored is a medium-dark brown-toned red with mostly opaque color coverage and a modern matte finish. NARS Amsterdam is slightly browner. MAC Rocker is less brown. shu uemura Rouge Luster is less red. MAC Extended Play is similar, but it is not quite as red/bright. MAC Such Flare is similar.
Love Goddess is a brightened, pink-red with a satin finish. It has opaque color coverage and applies evenly and smoothly. This shade wore for six hours. Tarina Tarantino Fuchsia Lining is lighter. Guerlain Girly is pinker. MAC Gesina is very similar. Chanel Emotive is lighter.
Pure Zen is a rosy beige nude with semi-opaque color coverage. This shade wore for three and a half hours. MAC Lazy Day is slightly grayer. Chanel Rose Dentelle is a bit pinker. Napoleon Paradis Havana is similar. Cle de Peau #129 is very similar, a smidgen less pale. MAC Angel is pinker.
Scarlet Ibis is a reddened orange with a natural matte finish and full color coverage. This has a matte finish. This shade wore for six hours. MAC Sail la Vie is similar. It’s a little redder compared to Givenchy Candide Tangerine. It is similar to Giorgio Armani #405 with a matte finish. Estee Lauder Wild Fire is a touch lighter. Dolce & Gabbana Sheer is similar but a touch brighter.
MAC Lipsticks are vanilla-scented but taste-free. The matte shades in this launch are like the more recent matte launches–creamy, smooth, easy to apply, and opaque. They have a subtle sheen that wears away after an hour or so and results in a true matte finish. I haven’t had the time yet to test all of these shades, but I plan to do so today and tomorrow and will update with wear times. Shades like Charmed, I’m Sure and Deeply Adored tend to wear six hours or so, and they have a tendency to stain as well. Pure Zen was slightly drying, which is typical of my experience with the Cremesheen finish. Scarlet Ibis was neither drying nor hydrating. Love Goddess was just a bit hydrating for a few hours.
Keep in mind, online retailers like Nordstrom, Macy’s, Dillard’s, and Bloomingdale’s will also launch the collection online. These retailers typically launch close in time to the in-store release date (October 4th).

Moxie isn’t like Love Goddess. VG1 is a bit darker than Deeply Adored – has a more retro vibe.

I went to a pre screening for this collection with intentions on getting deeply adored and was disappointed as to how light this color turned out. I thought it was going to be darker more vampy, when I swatched it on it looked more berry on me. I am light med complexion with strong yellow undertones so the color wasn’t at all what I thought might look on me. I picked up love goddess instead and was Rey pleased buy the color payoff, it’s beautiful and it looked like a red tinged hot pink on me. Personally i think the packaging is lovely and chic. I passed on scarlet ibis and charmed I’m sure since charmed I’m sure looked a lot like my covergirl hot lipstick on me and scarlet ibis (sighs) beautiful color but haven’t we had enough orange lippies this year?

I thought the reds, but they are much darker than I expected! I don’t think my NC15-ness will pull that off. Love Goddess and Scarlet Ibis are the one’s I’m eyeing now… and even then, neither are singing, if you know what I mean. Hmmm. Is this the same Pure Zen from Cremesheen + Pearl?

Hi Christine, Please can you help me out? I think i only need one but can’t choose. Should i pick up Rocker or Deeply Adored or are they that different i should get up both? From what i have been reading the only difference that Rocker has glitter in it. I am a fan of a bit of glitter on occasions so i think im leaning more to Rocker. I’m not bothered about the packaging either really as i am going to pick up Love Goddess from this collection anyways. If you could give me your opinion that would be great. Thank you :0)

Yay! MAC did a good job with these! I was interested in Pure Zen and Lice Goddess but I have so many nudes, I think Love Goddess is the only one I could justify getting. Can’t wait to see the blush swatches.

I definitely want Deeply Adored – it looks stunning – but I can’t decide about Charmed I’m Sure… It is a beautiful shade, but I already have Red Racer, Runaway Red, Russian Red and Ruby Woo (plus Eden Rouge Mattene, Heartless from Venomous Villains and UD Revolution), all of which might be similar. I suppose I should skip it and save money!
Now that it isn’t 3:00 a.m… I’m looking at the swatches and while a couple of these are really tempting, I really do have similar dupes for all of them. I might grab Scarlet Ibis just cuz.

Yeah, for future reference, waiting or relying for the email is usually not the way to go 🙁 It typically launches a few hours before the email!
I know I was disappointment too at first. Then thought it’s just good for my wallet. I already have a ton of red lipsticks and just need to be happy with those. Oh well.
I’ll be honest: This collection is the biggest temptation that’s been thrown my way since I started my boycott of Estee Lauder brands, back in the spring. I’d LOVE to have “Charmed, I’m Sure” and “Deeply Adored.”
I feel sure I can find the same colors in other lines, though, and I already own Ruby Woo, Russian Red, Powerhouse, Classic Dame, Lady Danger, and Runaway Red, so it’s not as if I lack for reds.
I’m going out of time and don’t have time for other sites to put it up. I called MAC in Times Square and placed my order as soon as they opened. Looks like I’ll get everything I need.

Really not surprised – this is how MAC has built its machine – launch in the middle of the night, have low quantities (or at least, not enough to meet even half of the demand), and knows you’ll be there for the next rollercoaster! 🙁

I love Love Goddess! The reds are very pretty but it seems like you could get pretty close with another color. Still might pick them up, though.

the lipsticks were really the only thing I was intersted in. Of course they are sold out. I will call and have them placed on hold at my local MAC. That being said MAC should really allow people to order 2 of something with these limited edition collections. Undoubtedly, scalpers bought 10 of each to then sell on ebay for crazy prices. Personally, they are making me weak with allowing that to go on and raising their own prices as well.

Inge is right though. Pro members are not supposed to order more than 3 of any single item, and others 4, but there are people who go in with Pro accounts and place 3 orders in a row to sell it on eBay. When By Request came out, there was a girl on Instagram showing her 10 Candy Yum Yums that she bought to sell on eBay, where they were raking in a disgusting $100+ EACH. I have seen the Pro benefits get cut back more and more as they attempt to stop the eBay jerks, but I really think they need to put more effort into identifying who these eBay sellers are and stripping their Pro memberships! NO ONE should have to pay $100 for a MAC lipstick! And no one should get denied due to lightning-fast sell outs because the scalpers wiped out the supply. Makeup is supposed to be fun–these people are ruining it for everyone. 🙁
Not saying there aren’t ways to get around it – only that they do have a system in place, even if it isn’t foolproof! 🙂
Oh true, and I’m sure you are aware of this; I am probably more “whining” (the G rated word for what I really mean) about MAC’s lack of policing the Pro accounts who abuse the privilege. I’m a Makeup Artist, but I also love the products and have my own personal collection. It infuriates me when I miss a color I’ve been waiting for because so many people are abusing their Pro cards. I don’t have ANY other pro memberships that have this problem. I’d also hate to see MAC Pro go the way of Urban Decay just to stop the eBay nonsense. :\

I wonder then, Christine, did it launch at different times in different places? I literally stalked the Internet starting at 12am this morning. It had not launched in Florida where I am as of 5am. Then bam! I blink, there it is at 7:30, I hit shop and was slapped in the face with sold out. Just really disappointed. I have spoken with my local MAC counter and will be braving that fiasco next Thursday. I’m obsessed with Marilyn, books, DVDs, music, clothing, artwork. It’s the only reason I’m willing to fight at the store.
It went up approximately 4:30am PST, which would have been 7:30 AM your time! It looked like nothing sold out for ~one hour after that.

I’m just to “meh” about this collection. The lipstick are almost appealing to me, but not really. I’ll check it out in stores to see if anything works on me, but I have enough red lippies.

After seeing your swatches last night, I decided I just had to have Love Goddess and Charmed, I’m Sure. Possibly the grey-blue eyeshadow too & Mehr (which not a single Macy’s or Dillard’s counter seems to carry). You know my issues with MAC’s Limited Edition game and lord knows, I have enough reds, but I *really* wanted the lipsticks, so I stayed up. I hadn’t slept in over 2 days though and finally fell asleep, probably about 10 minutes before they hit the website judging by the times mentioned below. And… BAM, they’re sold out.
I’m really frustrated and annoyed. I’m not going to call the one, single MAC store in town in a futile attempt to pre-order the lipsticks or jump through endless hoops. The Macy’s/Dillard’s counter near me never gets more than 10 in a batch of the new stuff. It’s really no use and frankly, it’s just not worth THAT much effort to me. I hate MAC’s Limited Edition thing with their intentionally low quantities. Really, really HATE it. It’s the one thing that turns me off MAC as a whole. Every time I do try to actually counter the odds, it’s…. *sigh* Did I mention that I’m annoyed? I wish everyone luck in getting what they want. I’m sure it will look lovely on all of you.

A lot of readers were reporting their counters/stores only had 2-5 of each shade 🙁
2 to 5???!?! That’s insane! It’s even worse than the usual 8-10 number that some MUAs at the Macy’s and Dillard’s counters have quietly told me in the past is their usual number for L/E stuff. It’s just bewildering to me. Even if hype drives sales, there are enough die-hard MAC addicts that a greater number would STILL cause hype, they still wouldn’t have a ton of extra product left (esp. for really significant, important collections) *AND* result in greater profits for the company. They don’t have to manufacture 500 more per counter; even 50-80 would do it. The only ones who would lose would be eBay sellers. MAC’s business model makes absolutely no sense to me.
And what’s even worse? My MAC store got ONE beauty powder and the same 2-6 of each lipstick and about 4 of each blush. And this is the top selling MAC store in the area- I think all stores got the same crap amount! They had plenty of polish and decent amt of shadows- but everyone wants lipstick and blush dang it!

SOLD OUT. As usual. This is why I am soooooo over the collections!! I stalked the website until about 3a.m. central time (TX) since I was up studying anyway. NADA. Then I wake up this morning around 9:30 and boom….already sold out. Everything gone….except the nail polishes which I don’t want to pay $17.50 for. And to top it off, I’m not that excited about anything really anyway. I’m a huge Marilyn fan, but not much uniqueness with this collection in my opinion. Nothing really stands out to me. Not even worth fighting through the crowd that will inevitably hit MAC when this collection releases in store. All I wanted was Love Goddess lipstick and the two blushes. I more than likely have similar colors in my collection already, in all honesty.
Still frustrating, though. 🙁
These are nice, but I am so over the MAC limited edition game. The cosmetics companies have to *earn* my money, and I’m not going to lose sleep over their products just because they make such piddling quantities. It’s beyond ridiculous!
Christine, I have 2 questions if you don’t mind…. First, isn’t Pure Zen just a special packaging version of the perm range Pure Zen that recently came out with the Cremesheen + Pearl collection? Please say yes LOL I skipped it for that reason.
Second, I’m curious if this year’s Scarlet Ibis is any different from last year’s Iris Apfel release? I also skipped this one because I already have last year’s, but I’ve heard a lot of complaints about Candy Yum Yum and Moxie being “different” than the original colors, and I’ve even seen a few swatch comparisons that prove the colors have changed. I really like the original Scarlet Ibis, so I’m hoping they didn’t alter it.

I’d go a step further and say Scarlet Ibis is like Ruffian Red and Sail La Vie got together and had a baby. I swatched the 3 on my arm today (I have last year’s SI), and the Ruffian is similar, matte, but darker, and SLV is Satin, and a bit oranger. Before this collection released, I had put SLV on half my mouth and SI on the other half, and the only difference I saw was that SLV was shiny!

Ugh about the lipaticks being sold out, im gonna be up early next Thursday (thankfully no class on Thursday’s) and get my self to that Mac store I’m lucky to have 3 near by and 2 are in the same mall 🙂
So depressed that I will never be able to own ANY of these shades. I have looked forward to this collection for MONTHS and woke up at 5:30 a.m. Central Time to buy it online…only to discover that all the lipsticks were sold out. I really feel like crying right now…

Well, I looked at the MAC website at 5:30, and all the lipsticks except Pure Zen were sold out.
Visit or call your local MAC store and ask them if they can put a hold on the products you want. I went to the MAC store at my Macy’s and I was able to put a hold on the deeply adored lipstick from the collection. They even let me preview the whole collection which was really nice of them!
Like Christine said, you could try again at department store websites when the collection goes live there. And for all we know the sell out is only temporary. Sometimes products will be listed as out of stock and then become available again a few days/week later. I noticed that about the Heavenly Creatures collection.

Actually Pure Zen is a repromote so it wasn’t created with Marilyn in mind. Its really pretty though, I picked one up!
If MAC did not put Marilyn on it, would it be sold out like this? You just saved yourself some money given that MAC raised the prices on this.
What’s a modern matte? To me, Deeply Adored looks more semi-matte, but you described it as a modern matte? I’m just kind of confused of what a modern matte is.
Modern matte is like 90% matte, 10% sheen. It’s not the 100% flat look – e.g. Ruby Woo = retro matte.
I have been anxiously awaiting these beautiful Marilyn shades, but now that I see them, I realize that I have many MAC reds that don’t really need any more compatriots. Having said that, I would like to get my hands on Deeply Adored which is such a gorgeously seductive and deep shade. I have recently seen Revlon’s Shanghai Collection which possesses two lovely Marilyn-esque shades: Red Lacquer and Cherry Blossom (which looks very similar to Deeply Adored). So, if I am not able to purchase Deeply Adored, then Cherry Blossom it shall be. 🙂

Deeply adorned is so pretty. Im going to order that one but i need a lip liner tho 🙁 can you recommend one thats close to this shade? I wont be able to pick it up instore and macs swatches are usually unreliable…

I check the website around 8 EST and it was available for a couple hours…I only picked up one lipstick in Deeply Adored..the whole collection was pretty redundant..wonder what Marilyn would have thought lol
I’ve never owned a red MAC Lipstick mainly because I tend to play it more safe but I’m debating whether or not to buy one for the sake of the collection. I know I’m getting at least one lipstick posibly two.
How would you compare Scarlet Ibis and Lady Danger, shadewise? They seem pretty similar to me!

I’m a little disappointed with this collection. The packaging looks cheep and most of the line has either already been launched or is permanent and apparently the only way to get your hands on any of it was if you ordered and paid for it before they launched. I’ve started trying other makeup lines and have found better quality products, I think I’m over MAC right now. I just thought I’d share…

Wow! All of the reds are absolutely gorgeous! I love red lipstick more than any other. And of course I love Marilyn! <3 Such a shame these sold out so instantly. Oh well, on to the next thing. I'm so over items that require effort to buy. If I can't buy it at a reasonable convenience I don't even want it anymore.

Fro a VERY pale person (lighter than NC/NW15 in MAC reference), what shade of red can you recommend? I originally had planned to get Charmed, I’m Sure but it looks a little too “bright” for me, where Deeply Adored looks quite nice. But I’ve never owned a red lipstick before, so I’m scared to choose the wrong one!

You look good in everyone of those lippies! So pretty. Selecting makeup to wear must be a breeze for you. You can close your eyes and pick a lipstick, because no matter what, it just looks amazing on you!

It’s darker, warmer than Speak Louder, but it’s not as bright or as pink as Impassioned.

It’s lighter, less warm!

im a little sadden that all of the colors were in the red family except for “pure zen” i was hoping that the color “deeply adorned” would have been a nice plum/brown as the swatch on their website let on thanks for the review you helped deter me from making a mistake but now ill check out the Zen =]
I’m not at ALL disappointed to see so many reds.
In fact, this collection is the toughest one to ignore since I stopped buying MAC in spring 2012.
I’m not proud of this, but I consoled myself by buying Ellis Faas L101 “Ellis Red,” and, oh, my goodness, it is GOOOORGEOUS!

Ladies don’t be upset just yet. Call your local dept store with a mac counter and see if they have any. I did this today and found both colors I wanted. Just be prepared to pay for them over the phone.
