MAC Marcel Wanders 2: Lipsticks
There are four limited edition MAC Lipsticks ($22.50 for 0.15 oz.) in the new Marcel Wanders 2 Collection: Annelie (soft peachy beige with pearl), Annemiek (soft neutral pink with pearl), Felicienne (dirty mauve with pearl), and Inez (plum with gold pearl). These are specially packaged in “chrome” so they come at a higher price point than regular MAC lipsticks.
- Annelie is a metallic gilded beige with a frost-metallic finish. The color coverage is semi-opaque’ it’s sheer in places but opaque when the light hits it because the reflective quality is so high. MAC Quietly Please is darker, less opaque. MAC Gel is much more golden. MAC Tanarama is darker, yellower. MAC Bechbound is more golden. Benefit Fame Game comes the closest but is less metallic.
- Annemiek is a light-medium pink with a frost-metallic sheen. The color coverage is semi-opaque, but this shade doesn’t apply as evenly as I’d like it to. Chanel Candeur is similar in color but less metallic. Guerlain Rouge Innocent is darker and less metallic.
- Felicienne is a muted pink with a hint of mauve and a bright silver metallic finish. The color coverage is semi-opaque. MAC Lazy Day reminded me of this shade, but due to the metallic finish, they are pretty different. MAC Win-Win is similar but sheerer. MAC Whirls & Twirls is similar but a touch pinker.
- Inez is a berry-plum with gold shimmer and a frosted finish. The color coverage is semi-opaque. MAC Aristo-cat is similar but less purple. MAC Plum Bright doesn’t have the shimmer and is much more intense. MAC Courting Lilac has a much lighter base.
All four shades have a frost finish, but these tended to run more metallic-frost than regular frost. The frost was a little finer, and the sheen was more reflective akin to metal. These are a very specific look to be sure, so it may not work for everyone. Because of the high frost finish, these do not apply as evenly as other lipsticks, and while they seem soft to the touch, they do not glide over lips effortlessly. I tested Annelie and Inez for wear, I was able to get to three hours or so, but both shades felt drying. Not terribly so but left my lips noticeably dehydrated after wearing each for four hours.
These are vanilla-scented like other MAC lipsticks, but the fancy packaging did include an increase in product size: normal MAC lipsticks only contain 0.10 oz. while these contain 0.15 oz., which is 50% more. (Funny how percentages work–50% sounds like so much more than 0.05 oz. more!) The packaging is a magnet for fingerprints, and it felt a bit cheap in my hands. It’s very lightweight, so it lacks the heft of true metal packaging, but even though it is lightweight, the lipstick itself is fairly bulky.

Terrible finishes make terrible lipsticks. I do like the Dutch names!

Meh. I was originally going to get Annemiek, Felicienne and Inez, but that’s before I knew they were $8 more than a normal lipstick (and before they got a not-so-great rating). It’s not even a good deal, you only end up “saving” like 75 cents in the long run. And if the quality isn’t up to par and it doesn’t wear well, what’s the use? MAC is getting a little carried away with their business practices lately, I’m not loving it. I think I’ll skip these

Pass. But Christine, I’ve noticed you don’t include packaging photos for lipsticks. Any chance you’ll start to? Sometimes I’ll buy a shade I have a dupe of if the packaging is pretty, so I don’t think it is unimportant. Thanks for considering and doing what you do 😀
I’m not a very good photographer, and unfortunately, I have not figured out how to take photos of really metallic-like packaging (since this looks like metal but it’s cheap plastic), which is why I did not include packaging photos for this product. I’m so sorry! I very often do include product packaging for lipsticks – the first time I’ve tried it, but not every single shade I ever review since the packaging doesn’t change, just the shade 🙂
There are some techniques you can use for very reflective surfaces. You need to modify your lights to be diffuse rather than specular. On-camera flash and the sun are examples of spectular light. It’s opposite is diffuse light, such as window light or open shade like under a tree.

Keep an eye out on magazine advertising – many products are reflective (cars are–and are always shot at night or sunset to avoid specular sunshine!). Small product photography is a whole subspecialty so you might think of yourself as a beginner but the evidence speaks otherwise! There’s all sorts of resources available for taking it to the next level. I suggest going down to Calumet Photographic over in the mission and see if they can help you with some new equipment.
In terms of beauty portraits, the eyeball is reflective and therefore mirrors the lighting setup used. Look at any Cover Girl ad and you will see a white ring or panel reflected in the eyeball ( Sometimes you can see the photographer’s silhouette!) Ring, umbrella, and box flashes cause these and give a diffuse light to the skin, flattening out textural imperfections. A ring flash and a remote controlled camera, tripod mounted, with a longer lens (or optically zoomed) from further away will give a professional look to portraits.

Christine, you are a true beauty and so these colours look better on you than they probably would on 3/4 of the population. With the exception of Inez, they really don’t even do anything for YOU and you make a lot of unflattering products look better than they are! I have a dear friend whose daughter is named “Anneli” and I actually thought of getting that for her (the mom) but it’s not a shade she’d like either. Inez, though, looks very nice.

Wow, I love Inez and then realized it’s because it looks so similar to a Wet N’ Wild lipstick I have, 502A. Pinky mauve with gold shimmer and a little frosty, and goes for only $1– whaat!

These have a very 80’s feel to them. Not interested, esp. for the steep price tag.
I dont care what everyone else says -I kinda like frost lipsticks! Sometimes they need a dab of gloss but some of my favourite lipsticks are this finish 🙂 Anyway, I dont really want to get anything from this collection because of the price, but I *might* be tempted by Annelie and/or Felicienne. I’m glad I have Courting Lilac, Plum Bright and Aristo-Cat so I can happily skip Inez.
Alas, nothing for us brown skin girls, so I will pass on this collection!

I never really cared for their first Marcel Wanders collection, I wish MAC would just release more paint pots and a better version of CARBON eyeshadow. Oh and make those kissable lip colours permanent, THAT would be a dream!
I agree with some of the other comments that these look so frosty. Not my cup of tea at all. They look beautiful in the tubes though.
Inez is pretty, but since I already have Courting Lilac, Aristo-Cat and Purple Haze, which all look kind of similar, I really don’t think I need it. Kind of disappointing, because when MW1 came out, I bought three of the 4 lipsticks and still love them.
It’s sad that these were given a poor review as I tend to trust your reviews. They are so pretty and love the sheen! I still might pick one up though. 🙂
This is so disappointing! Inez, that kind of plum/berry with gold pearl/shimmer/reflect, is one of my favorite kinds of lipstick ever, and I’d love to have a new one, especially from MAC! But alas, this will not be it…

Hmm. The swatches look beautiful, but I’m not wild about the finish when I actually see it on your lips. That high metallic sheen is something I associate with overly frosty drugstore lipsticks. Maybe that’s just me!
