MAC Me Over: Eyeshadows

There are six shades of MAC Eyeshadow ($15.00 for 0.05 oz.) launched with MAC Me Over. They include: Carbonized (frosty dark brown), Creamy Bisque (mid-tone ivory with pearlized pigments), Moleskin (nude brown), Mythical (frosty copper red), Outre (mid-tone mustard), and Satin Taupe (taupe with silver shimmer).

  • Carbonized is a rich chocolate brown with bronze shimmer. The color payoff is lovely with a really soft and smooth texture. This shade has a veluxe pearl finish (so it is only 0.04 oz.). Urban Decay Lost is a bit similar, but it has a more reflective sheen and appears lighter, which is the same reason why Inglot #422 is not a dupe.  It’s similar to MAC Centre Stage but with less shimmer. Wet ‘n’ Wild Comfort Zone is less brown.
  • Creamy Bisque is a soft, creamy ivory with a pink tint. The finish has a pearly sheen. The pigmentation is pretty good, and I can see this being a go-to highlighter for some. This shade has a frost finish. MAC Blanc Type is more beige. It’s more like a less frosted Phloof!
  • Moleskin is a softened, medium brown with a subtle, caramel warmth. This shade has a matte finish. It feels more like a satin to me, though–it has the same texture and, to some degree, the finish. It has good color payoff. It is a touch warmer than Urban Decay Naked but similar, though Naked has a softer formula. Inglot #337 is similar but has a redder base.
  • Mythical is a coppery brown with a metallic shimmer-sheen. This shade has a veluxe pearl finish (so it is only 0.04 oz.). The pigmentation is good, but the color itself has a faded quality to it, and the texture is smooth and soft. It is lighter than theBalm Racy Kacy, less brown and red-tinted compared to MAC Faux Gold. It’s also a muted version of Coppering.
  • Outre is a mustard-y brown–it has this mustard yellow tinge to it. This shade has a matte finish. It has a soft, smooth texture with lovely color payoff. It is reminiscent of MAC Ochre Style, which had shimmer in it. Double Feature 4 is muddier–it is grayer and browner. It’s darker and more yellowed than MAC Bamboo.
  • Satin Taupe is a dark taupe with a hint of burgundy and a frosted finish. This shade has a frost finish, and it is part of the permanent range. It is similar to Bare Escentuals Meteorite.

The four I’ve tested so far are good.  The texture of both Mythical and Satin Taupe are excellent, but the color payoff is good across the board.  I think Moleskin, despite its demure manner, will be one that many will look to grab when it launches, because of its similarity to the famous Urban Decay Naked–consider it a sleeper hit.  I know Outre will look awful on me, but it has that so-ugly-it’s-pretty kind of appeal.

MAC Me Over is a 51-piece collection for fall, which will launch in North America on August 25th, 2011 and internationally in September 2011. It will launch online approximately August 23rd but there is no concrete online launch date. All products–unless otherwise noted–are limited edition.

Christine, any chance you can add swatches with similar MAC comparisons for example Mythical with Coppering, or Faux Gold side by side etc? I am so visual and this would show me how similar the colors are to each other. Thanks.

Amanda Avatar

Saddle is much darker and oranged toned. It’d work well as a crease shade, where as moleskin could be a highlight shade since it’s pretty light.

Pamela M Avatar

These shadows are kind of odd. The only onw worth having is moleskin but the name puts me off LOL. Back to the drawing board MAC not impressed. Thanks for the swatches as always Christine, you’re the best.

Kathryn Avatar

I don’t think its actually less product. Its the same amount in the container in terms of voloume, but the same amount of the velux pearl weighs less than the others in the same size container.

Mariella Avatar

I’ve got Satin Taupe already and have UD’s Naked so there’s really nothing here for me (good thing, since I’m not a “no buy”…HA, let’s see how long I last this time!)

Lisa Avatar

I like the color of Moleskin, but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t show up on my eyelids! My lids are already dark brown and always seem to wear a brown shadow when I wasn’t!

Definately Mythical for me, but the swatch look a whole lot like Bold and Brazen from the pictures! This definately have more red.

Carrie Ann Avatar

Did they raise the price of their eye shadows? I could’ve sworn they used to be $14 and the price was recently raised to $14.50.

Laura Avatar

I sometimes forget how much I love Satin Taupe <3

The only other one I'm drawn too is Outre, and that's only because it's different from anything else I own. I'm not sure I'd get much wear out of it though!

Becca Avatar

I already have satin taupe, and the NAKED palette, and mythical is the one that stands out to me here. we’ll see when I’m able to swatch it…

Rosie Avatar

Ok I officually want these all!!! They e/s look great, and I dont’ have nearly as many neutral colors as I’d like. I have a ton of bold, bright colors but I def. need to add more neatrals to my stash! I really like all of these colors!!!

Mari Avatar

Thanks again for the great review. I might have to try outre. It might be a great blending out color for the crease to highlight area.

Sass Avatar

First thought that moleskin looked like UD Buck, but Buck is browner or on the brown side. I only like Outre…hmmm. Oh well this whole collection is a snore. Glad I’m able to save some money out of this.

Katie Avatar

I almost bought double feature 4 but didn’t because I really wanted it for the mustard yellow shade. I have many teals. I thought Outré was the same one, but you say they swatch different. If I like such a shade, do you recommend getting outré or double feature 4?
Thank you!

Ashley Avatar

Thanks a lot Christine! I was thinking of getting this one, but I didn’t want to get it if it was too close to a color I own already.
Much appreciated ^_^

Courtney Avatar

Outre’s kind of interesting. I have Chrome Yellow since yellow shadow was really in last fall. This one might be kinda cool too.

Ester Avatar

Between Moleskin and Soft Brown, which is a must have? I want that type of color but am not sure which to get. I am NC15ish with dark brown hair and eyes.

Danielle J. Avatar

Moleskin swatches look similar to MAC’s tete-a-tint, discontinued, though I am desperately looking to find a replacement. Is this similar enough to be a dupe? Or is tete-a-tint closer to the inglot shade?

JennerLynner Avatar

wow! i thought mythical would turn out looking like cranberry but it’s so different. it’s still pretty so i might have to look into it!

Olivia Avatar

I think I’ll be content if I just buy mythical. I already own satin taupe and the naked palette, but I can tell by the swatch that Outre would look awful on me. 🙂 Even if it didn’t look horrible, it doesn’t look like something I would wear on a daily basis. I appreciate your review, Christine. 🙂

Kathryn Avatar

PEOPLE! You are not getting less of the Velux pearl in the package. You get the same amount of shadow, it just weigh less. Just like 5 lbs of flour will look very different from 5 lbs of feathers. They will not fit in the same size container. They fill the pot with the color the same volume as the other colors…it simply weighs less.

Vale Avatar

Ok, I’ve understood that this is a warm-skintoned collection… I just hope they will also provide a cold-skintoned one. I think I’ll skip the entire collection. Not a single color decent on me 🙁

Sandy Avatar

Thanks for the great eyeshadow swatches Christine! Will you be able purchase & swatch the Creamy Bisque eyeshadow before the release date? Also do you think Moleskin compares with Wedge at all? These are the only two eyeshadows I’m interested in since I tend to like neutrals, thanks again.

Sandy Avatar

Thanks so much for taking the time to post swatches of the Creamy Bisque and Carbonized Eyeshadows in this collection, you work so hard on this, much appreciated!! 🙂

maggy Avatar

i like 3 of the shadows outre, creamy bisque & carbonized. Might skip the creamy bisque though, seems pretty dupable. Actually so does the carbonized but im a sucker for browns.

Grace Avatar

Hi Christine! Would you say we need Carbonized if we have Centre Stage? I know Carbonized is a little warmer, but do you think the difference would be apparent upon application? Thanks!!

Chris25 Avatar

It’s funny, one would think Carbonized would be easy to dupe, because there are so many chocolate browns in the cosmetic world. My wallet won’t be happy to hear this news. 😛

Mariella Avatar

Mythical looks so cool in the pan but it’s a colour I just can’t (or maybe “won’t” – perhaps it’s time for me to try) wear. I really like Carbonized but I have SO many shadows that are so close in colour that the difference, once applied to the eyes and blended, it negligible (MAC’s Centre Stage, the brown side of Illusionary/Burning Ambition, not to mention Mulch and then all the other browns in various palettes from UD, Too Faced). So I’ll probably pass on this group…but you never know; I may fall hard for Carbonized when I see it in-store.

Vini Avatar

Is the Moleskin eyeshadow similar to MAC Wedge eyeshadow? Or is it closer to Soft brown? I’m looking for soft brown from MAC but cannot find it in my country 🙁 Maybe Moleskin is a good dupe?

Lauren Avatar

Hi Christine!

I’m a Mac Pro member, and have been waiting for Mac Me Over to pop up on the pro site since Thursday (as usual), but nothing! I just recently called Mac Pro and they’re telling me it’s not coming out on the pro site or regular site until September; that it’s launching in stores first this time. Have you heard of this? (I thought one of the perks of being a pro member, was that you got to purchase products ahead of time.) I’m a little disappointed.

Christine Avatar

I haven’t heard this, but I did check with MAC last week (late last week) and they said it was coming out on August 25th & there were no delays. I purchased all of the remaining products (whatever I didn’t receive from MAC PR) from the SF PRO store – they launched it as far as I know last week on Thursday like PRO stores were supposed to…

It would be an interesting move, no? Perhaps forcing people to see products and be more persuaded by that than buying online – though I swear I make more impulse buys online!

Lindsay Avatar

I love Moleskin! I really want to wear it in the crease, maybe paired with All That Glitters on the lid, and Blanc Type as a highlight, keeping it simple, neutral, and soft. Such a beautiful collection! I like the look of Carbonized too. I’m glad its not a frost, I prefer veluxe pearl, satin, and matte finishes for my everyday looks 🙂

amanda Avatar

i want carbonized.. reminds me of Galapagos by NARS with warmer sparkle, and darkhorse slash smog from the naked palette! what are your thoughts?

Deneuve Avatar

hi there, does anyone here have brown eyes, dark hair, medium tan and uses Mythical? that color has not landed in our shores yet, and I’m curious if it goes well with my tanned skin. it looks gorgeous on green eyed ladies though, at least based on the googled photos.

i fear that it might give that “just cried” look on a BB 4.25 skin tone. any feedback will be much appreciated, thanks!

BooBooNinja Avatar

Hi Christine,

I read through all the comments and your responses and wow… you sure are patient! I have a question that has not yet been asked 🙂

You responded to someone saying that Wedge and Moleskin are similar in colour. What are they like to work with? — i.e. Is one better/easier to blend with than the other?

Finally, am I correct in thinking that Moleskin is matte?

Thanks for your time!
