MAC Surf Baby: Lipsticks

MAC Surf Baby Lipstick ($15.50 for 0.10 oz.) includes four shades: Bust Out! (dirty mid-tone violet), Hibiscus (bright orange coral), Mocha (peachy yellow-brown), and Naturally Eccentric (creamy white nude). Mocha is permanent and Naturally Eccentric (Naturally Eccentric, ’05) is a repromote.

  • Bust Out! is a semi-sheer to semi-opaque pinked purple with a lustre finish. It’s darker and less glossy compared to Playtime (Quite Cute, ’11). It’s darker, purpler, less fuchsia in comparison to Style Curve (Stylishly Yours, ’10). It seems a little pinker than Up the Amp (permanent).
  • Hibiscus is a brightened, medium-dark red-coral with soft gold shimmer. It has a cremesheen finish.  It’s like a richer, deep version of Viva Glam Cyndi.  It’s a little redder than Coral Polyp (Dame Edna, ’08). It’s a touch less bright than Toxic Tale, and the finish makes it appear a little different, too.
  • Mocha is a warm, medium-dark brown with yellow undertones. It has a satin finish, so the coverage is really opaque and the finisy very creamy.
  • Naturally Eccentric is a semi-opaque, really light nude which leans a little pink on me. It has a lustre finish. It’s a little less pink than Hue. I think the lustre finish gives it a slightly uneven look that’s less than lovely.

MAC lipsticks are vanilla scented but taste-free. Lustre finishes, like Bust Out! and Naturally Eccentric, are designed to be sheer with a slightly glossy finish, so the pigmentation on both is as expected. Mocha, as a satin finish, is creamy and opaque, as it should be. I typically get two to three hours of wear out of lustre finishes, with four to five hours of wear out of satin finishes.

I can’t wait to see Hibiscus, but I’m surprisingly loving Bust Out. I guess because it isn’t TOO in your face. I would still need to try it on first.

Bust Out! is really pretty, but so similar to lipsticks I already have. I don’t know why I don’t already own Mocha. It’s such a great color. I like how these lipstick tubes look like little surfboards.

laura Avatar

thanks a lot ^^ I love purple lipsticks and I am always afraid of having similar things… I’m looking for a more blue based purple but I think I’ll take bust out anyway ^^

Nessa Avatar

Nice,I wasn’t planning on getting any lipped from here, but I’m loving that bust out shade and maybe even the Naturally Eccentric one,how do you compare do the Naturally Eccentric one to VV innocence Beware? I’ve been planning on getting a purples shade lipstick like Up the Amp and is a nc 25 shade,do you think i should get bust Out! Instead? Xoxo

Jensyn Avatar

Thank you, Christine!!!! I think I will skip Bust Out! since I have Playtime, Style Curve and Up the Amp (one of my favorites).
Here’s hoping MAC will come out with more purples in different finishes for the Fall/Winter collections. I also wish Lavender Whip would make a return and Go For It also.

Jill Avatar

I only really care for Bust Out of these three, and I also like Up the Amp, like someone else said, so I’ll probably skip it! I’m loving the eye and cheek colors in this collection though.

kasiaj85 Avatar

try patting the pale lippie onto your lips with your fingers just very lightly. It did work on me way better than when applied from the stick. And if it wasn’t leaning towards lavender in the sunlight I would have bought it.

ERICA Avatar

Natural Eccentric is the only one I am interested in,though it looks very sheer which is good. How many applications did you use for the lip swatch?

Shann Avatar

Hi Christine! I just wondered if Naturally Eccentric was similar to Innocence Beware from Venomous Villians. Thanks for all the great swatches.

fabiola Avatar

christine you really have perfect lips, they all look amazing on you. thanks again for your great review. always helps me a lot.

Ok, I’m not that much into purple lipsticks, but I LOVE Bust Out! I wasn’t originally planning on getting anything in this collection, but I might have to pick that lipstick up!

Roo Avatar

Bust Out is nice but I don’t think it’s very seasonal.

It’s kind of funny that the one lipstick PR didn’t send you is the one that should look great on you and be really popular.

Melanie Avatar

The collection’s already out in Europe and I managed to get my hands on the last Hibiscus Lipstick my MAC store had… so I’ll imagine it will be sold out in the US even more quickly. It’s a beautiful colour though and looks different on everybody that I’ve seen wearing it.

Ahenk Avatar

Would the bust out look good on a palest olive(neutral pale flowing to warm but not exactly warm) skin tone? I’m C2 skin tone and have deep brown eyes and hair.I loved the shade but not sure it if would fit.

Michelle Avatar

Hi Christine! I am loving Bust Out! Do you think the shade is quite similar to Magenta lipliner? I’ve been looking for it in a lipstick form!

pia Avatar

Funny, I used to have Mocha but I don’t recall it’s as bright in the tube as yours is here, Christine. On me, Mocha was the darker version of Kinda Sexy. It doesn’t look medium-dark brown, too n it’s kinda bright on your lips. I wonder if it was reformulated? Too bad I don’t have my Mocha anymore otherwise I’d send you the picture.

Devi Avatar

Would you happen to know a drugstore dupe for Mocha? I checked you Mickey Contractor lipstick post earlier, and Mocha was the only one that didn’t have any dupes listed in the individual shade review portion. ._. I’m so far away from a MAC counter and I don’t have my own credit card to purchase it online… so if there was a drugstore dupe, I’d be happy. D:

If you don’t, it’s fine, I’ll just have to wait until I can take the long trip to the mall. 😀 I’m just dying to try this on my NC35 skin. *_* Thanks in advance@

Emma Avatar

I LOVE Hibiscus, but I know I just wouldn’t wear it enough…sigh. I want them to bring back Viva Glam Cyndi, I completely missed out and I want it.
Naturally Eccentric is pretty too, but I like Hue better.

Jill Avatar

I just got Viva Glam Cyndi on ebay, overpriced, but I had to have it! On a side note though, I got the Cyndi lipglass at Nordstrom.com. It’s still in stock! I got it in the mail today and it’s gorgeous!!!

Misato-san Avatar

so Hibiscus’ review is here and I totally agree with you it reminded me of viva Glam Cyndi a lot… so I brought it too because I love the Cyndi but not so much its finish!

Jai Avatar

I’ll definitely be picking up hibiscus and i ‘might’ also be buying mocha from this collection though it’s a permanent shade… Thanks for the swatches Christine! 🙂

Kerri Avatar

I got Hibiscus at a preview party & really like it. It’s the first creme sheen formula I have, I usually go for matte if I use a bright color. I’m wondering which liner you would recommend with it? I feel like soar or chicory could work depending on which direction you wanted to go with it.

Lauren Avatar

So excited for Hibiscus!!! It’s currently en route to me. I am so pleasantly surprised MAC Pro Discount was allowed on these special packaged items. Whatever the reason for the change of heart MAC, I thank you.

bella Avatar

wow, love hibiscus on you! but it looks sooo different to what it looks like on me 🙂 on me it’s like a matte crazy coral-orange color, which i love 🙂 but still very different… a bit weird

Pleinair Avatar

is hibiscus more vibrant than VG Cyndi? Because I have VG Cyndi but Hibiscus seem prettier here:) do i need to get hibiscus too?

gfthvd Avatar

another quetion: if i got hibiscus and i taped it on the lips slightly sheerly i would get the color of viva galm cyndi on my lips more or less?

Jazmine Avatar

Hibiscus is a gorgeous color and its very pretty on you! more orange, i like. but my questions is: how did you apply it and if/what lip liner did you use?
