Smashbox Baller, Bubbly, Moody, Nymph Always On Gel Eyeliners Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Baller
Smashbox Baller Always On Gel Liner ($18.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a deep, blue-teal with cool undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, which was buildable to mostly opaque coverage that was somewhat even. I expected this shade to apply better than it did, and to help the color even out, I used a synthetic smudger brush to smudge and blend out the edges a bit. It was comfortable to apply and never tugged, even on the waterline. It wore well for eleven hours well on my lower lash line and nine hours on my lower waterline; after sixteen hours, there was still visible liner on my lower lash line but seemed like 40% had worn away (give or take!).
The Always On Gel Liner formula is supposed to have “super-saturated color” that wears for “over 24 hours” (because 24 hours aren’t enough!). I have four shades, and while they are long-wearing, they definitely look thinner and a little faded after ten hours of wear (and even thinner after sixteen hours of wear). They have a really creamy, almost slippery, consistency initially but dry down and remain resistant to transferring and smudging during the day. I found them harder to sharpen because the pencil was so creamy that sometimes it clogged up my sharpener.

Bubbly
Smashbox Bubbly Always On Gel Liner ($18.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a light, golden beige with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation in a single stroke, but I found it very hard to layer as it would lift some of the color I had initially applied, which resulted in uneven coverage overall. The texture was very creamy and comfortable to apply. This was the shortest wearing shade that I tried, as it only lasted for eight hours on my lower lash line well, and it had almost vanished entirely by sixteen hours. It did not apply well to the waterline.

Moody
Smashbox Moody Always On Gel Liner ($18.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a muted, dark taupe with warmer undertones and a cooler overtone. It had semi-opaque pigmentation in one layer, which was somewhat buildable to mostly opaque coverage with two to three layers. The pencil was creamy, a little slippery initially, but it dried down and stayed in place for the next nine and a half hours well on my lower lash line (and six hours on my waterline). After sixteen hours of wear, it seemed like there was about two-thirds of the original thickness of the liner left.

Nymph
Smashbox Nymph Always On Gel Liner ($18.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a rich, dark purple with warmer, pink undertones and cooler violet and blue pearl. It read “cooler” to me overall. The texture was smooth but not nearly as creamy as the other shades, and it had more of a tendency to look drier along the edges. It was somewhat buildable from medium coverage to mostly opaque coverage with two to three layers. This shade wore well for seven and a half hours on my waterline and ten hours on my lower lash line. After sixteen hours of wear, about half of the liner was still remaining on my lower lash line.

Nymph looks really pretty! Too bad about the lack of longevity, although I think I’d try these anyway since I don’t wear makeup all day =) Thanks for reviewing these!
No problem, Lex!
Crap.. was hoping Baller would be a better Kaliste which is my all time favourite teal liner due to the colour, but sadly the Nars has no lasting power on me and ends up in the ‘hoods. When I saw the Louboutin, a few weeks back, I seriously vanted..but resisted because of stupid price. I may have to step up to the plate. Argh
The Louboutin is so pricey, lol – I feel you on resistance!
Because I totally understand that the lower grade is due to Smashbox ‘s fairly ridiculous 24 hr. claim, you can bet I’m getting Baller! Probably Nymph, too! I’ll gladly take 10-11 hours of perfect wear, with a ton still there at the 16 hr. mark!
Yeah, these wore pretty nicely – the 24-hour claim is so frustrating!
so BALLERpretty but I think I need to invest in a better performing gel liner for this shade.
Gotcha! 🙂
I’ve had my eye on Mainline for years, I never understand why I don’t buy it. It’s just slightly adventurous and would add a pop to really any neutral look. I really need to get off my ass and get it. Too bad Baller wasn’t better!
Mainline is a lovely shade with neutrals!
It’s a shame that these beautiful shades were not of really good quality as the colours are so pretty.
I wish they didn’t have that pesky 24HR claim!
Another decent-looking product whose rating were ruined by an unrealistic wear claim! I wish it would stop, lol. Who is wearing eyeliner for over 24 hours straight anyways? Which makes you wonder, how would a claim like that even be tested? Does that claim include sleep? I doubt people will stay up 24+ hours just to test the eyeliners… It’s like marketing is just pulling numbers out of thin air, haha.
LOL! It makes you wonder, right?
Ow I really like Bubbly and Moody even more so! I think I can work with these… Do not mind that they do not stay on perfectly for 24 hours 😉
Yeah, I don’t mind they don’t last 24 hours personally!
Love the colour of Baller and Nymph! Might just have to indulge, although I kind of resent buying higher end eyeliners.
ColourPop Fast Lane is similar but available in a gel pot format. bareMinerals 1PM and Mainline would be my picks for pencil!
