MAC Stylishly Yours: Lipsticks

There are four shades of MAC Lipsticks ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) being released with Stylishly Yours. Two are new: Something New (creamy bright blue pink) and Style Curve (bright clean violet purple); and two are permanent products: Cockney (sheer yellow red with multidimensional pearl) and Neon Orange (bright clean orange, PRO only).

  • Cockney is an orange-based semi-opaque red with subtle gold shimmer. This has a lustre finish, and it was originally released with Euristocrats in 2009, but it was added to the permanent line.  It is also similar to Ladybug.
  • Neon Orange is a brilliant, neon orange with a creamy finish and opaque color coverage.  This has an amplified finish, and it is permanent at PRO stores.  If you can’t find it at PRO, Morange is close enough (just slightly lighter).
  • Something New is a medium-dark pink with a creamy finish and opaque color coverage.  This has an amplified finish, and it is limited edition.  It is cooler-toned, brighter and lighter than Girl About Town.  It is similar to NARS Schiap, which is brighter.   Smashbox’s Flirty is also similar, though perhaps a touch more purple.  It is a little pinker and brighter than Love Forever.
  • Style Curve is a semi-opaque fuchsia violet with a subtle sheen.  This has a cremesheen finish, and it is limited edition.  It is significantly more fuchsia and less opaque than Violetta.  It is closer to Show Orchid when worn, but it is sheerer, glossier in the finish, and less iridescent.  I wish they would have made this an amplified finish.  It took several layers to build up the color.

All of the lipsticks were as expected, based on their finish, with Cockney being surprisingly pigmented (well, not really surprisingly, since we’ve swatched it here before!).  I really do think that MAC could have made Style Curve a really fun, bright and opaque shade had they gone with an amplified formula (like they did with Neon Orange and Something New).  It did have a glossier finish than other cremesheens, though, which was nice.

Cockney and Neon Orange best suit warm-toned skin, as they both have orange undertones, while Something New and Style Curve best suit cool-toned skin, as they have bluer-bases.  While Neon Orange will be the most difficult for cooler skin tones to pull off, warmer skin tones should still find both Something New and Style Curve easy enough to wear as neither is too strongly blue in its base.

MAC Stylishly Yours Collection is a limited edition launch (official information and photos here) that is set to launch in-stores on December 26th in North America, January 2011 for international MAC locations. The approximate launch date for online is December 24th.

  • Product: 29/30
  • Value: 8/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

RECOMMENDATION: Overall, I really liked these lipsticks. They were true to their finishes; lustres tend to be sheerer and glossier and Cockney was just that (even more pigmented than the average lustre, actually), while cremesheen finishes vary from semi-sheer to opaque, Style Curve falls in the middle.

AVAILABILITY: MAC Cosmetics on December 26th (U.S. stores), January 2011 (International)

Something New – would probably be the only one I would get.

I’m such a lipstick whore, but tbh I have a lot of the lipsticks you compared it to…So I know I can skip it…Must have will power. lol

On the bright side I already have Cockney…And I have Violetta and Show orchid…And I know I wouldn’t wear Neon Orange or Style Curve enough to justify buying it. Heck , I have 60 lipsticks, and a lot of them are neglected , so … lol

Amrita Avatar

60 lipsticks 😀 You.are.awesome. I just started collecting make-up but I’m such a lipstick whore too! Nice to know that I’m not the only one 😛

Ohh I have my eye on 3 of those lipsticks:Cockney, Something New, and Style Curve. By layering Something New and Style Curve I think I could achieve a color like MAC’s Petals and Peacocks.

Heli Avatar

As with the pigments, I was hoping for more unique shades 🙁 Something New’s pretty but I prefer Girl About Town to it.

For some reason I thought Style Curve’s amplified so I was expecting a more vibrant shade, sort of what Revenge is Sweet lipglass looks like in the tube.

ugh… i purple lipstick that i’m not going to buy??! mac you’re killin me! blue toned purples people! and yes, they need to quit with the no-amplified finish thing when they launch a purple. bah!! 🙁 lol

I swatched all of these on my wrist, thinking I’d like at least a couple, but they didnt’ look good. I’ll try them on my lips when they come out, since I like the looks of Stylishly Yours.

Could you tell me how “Something New” compares to Macs “Lustering”? And also, do you think “Something New” and “Style Curve” would look good on NC 30-35 skin? I soooo wanna get those two, plus the “Movie Star Red” CCB. I’m in shock since I found out that it launches tomorrow in Germany,I’m so afraid I won’t be able to get those anymore…

I bought Cockney in Oct but I just bought a backup because it is stunning! Because it reminds me of summer I will wear it non stop come Memorial Day until Labor Day.

I’m actually really glad Style Curve is sheer! It’s nice that MAC is putting out a “trainer” fuschia-purple for us ladies too scared of Show Orchid or Violetta, haha.

Rica Avatar

I already got Something New and Style Curve and I love them both! I actually love all of these lipsticks except for cockney. Not a big fan of reds. LOL. I might try the Cream COlour bases of this collection, they look so bright and nice! 😀 Thanks christine for the wonderful descriptions!

I’m surprised by how much I like Style Curve! It’s one of those colors I’d impulse-buy for being purple but then never wear, except that judging by the swatches I’d actually be able to wear it. Gorgeous!

Rica Avatar

I just tried using Something New just now and yeah, you were right, it’s cooler than Girl About Town and not to mention more wearable! I love it! My new favorite hot pink lipstick! <3

Dea Avatar

Anyone please send me ALL of the lipsticks!! Dang those shades are not made for the faint of heart esp neon orange. but it’s the first shade that I am interested in, despite knowing that it is permanent. Hey christine, how is Style Curve compared to Fun n Sexy? When i looked at it, it sure reminded me of F&S lipstick which I absolutely love. If it is close enough, I will definitely get myy hands on it since there hasn’t been any close dupe for it (trust me.. i look everywhere -__-)

shadowy lady Avatar

thanks for the lovely swatches Christine. I find it ironic that Something New doesn’t look unique or new at all, lol!

I really am only interested in Neon Orange but I’ve tried Morange on before and it was hard for me to pull off (I’m NW25). You think this one will work?

kathy Avatar

Cockney is the only one I think I could wear, the others are too bright for me. I keep buying Mac lipsticks but the only one ive ever loved is Sweetie, and the Fergie Viva Glam one, I must have 20 or more that I never wear, im just not brave enough lol

Amy Avatar

Hey Christine!

Always a pleasure to read your reviews. I just wanted to know, if chatterbox was similar at all to Something New. I saw it wasn’t mentioned, but from your pictures I found it looks slightly similar.

Thanks!

I already have both Cockney and Neon Orange and I like both very much. I find that, for some reason, Neon Orange works better on my cooler skin tone than Morange. It seems like it’s just a hair pinker and that makes the difference.

I have Violetta and Go For It, so I really shouldn’t, but I think that I’ll probably get Style Curve. I can’t resist the siren song of purple.

Marcela Avatar

Style Curve looks freakishly scary in the tube but amazing on the lips! i was at MAC yesterday looking at ChamPale and now i wish i had tried Style Curve on…

tepi Avatar

hi christine!

when will MAC stop releasing collections? hahaha i can’t stop buying PINK lippies per collection…i already have Full Fuschia, Girl About town lippies, and Gimme That lipglass…and now I am eyeing to buy SOMETHING NEW…or shall i skip it?

also, i have PINK NOUVEAU, i want to buy Saint Germain, will i buy Saint Germain or shall i skip it?
