Les Annees Folles

Cle de Peau Les Annees Folles Holiday Eye Color Palette ($125.00 for 0.31 oz.) is a new, limited edition holiday palette that features eight eyeshadows. Each row of eyeshadows is actually removeable and can be put into one of the brand’s quad compacts. The formula was very finely-milled, but it was so soft that it was prone to sheering out as it was a little thin and dusty, though the formula blended well on the skin. If you’re someone who wants very true-to-pan color and intense coverage that lasts, you’ll likely be disappointed with this palette. If you’re someone who likes softer, more muted takes on color and doesn’t mind using an eyeshadow primer, it might be more in your wheelhouse (but it is undoubtedly expensive, so there are numerous other options that are more versatile–e.g. capable of delivering intense pigmentation but can also be sheered down).

Les Annees Folles #1

Les Annees Folles #1 is a muted, medium-dark burgundy with warm, brown undertones and a pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a soft, lightly dusty consistency that was easy to blend out but hard to maintain intensity with. This shade wore well for six and a half hours.

Les Annees Folles #2

Les Annees Folles #2 is a pop of medium pink with warm undertones and a soft, frosted sheen. The texture was very soft, moderately powdery, and was messy to use, as the color sheered out and dropped below the lid. I felt like I had to pack it on, layer after layer, to get any sort of intensity that was similar to what I saw in the pan. It lasted for six hours on me.

Les Annees Folles #3

Les Annees Folles #3 is a light-medium yellow gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had great color payoff with a soft, smooth, lightly dusty texture that wasn’t too thin or too firm in the pan. This shade was easy to work with and lasted for seven hours on me.

Les Annees Folles #4

Les Annees Folles #4 is a medium gray with neutral undertones and larger, chunkier sparkle. The texture was much looser than I anticipated (definitely less like the formula I’ve experienced in the past) and hard to control on the lid, as there was a lot of fall out and the eyeshadow sheered out as soon as I started to blend it. The color started to fade after six hours of wear.

Les Annees Folles #5

Les Annees Folles #5 is a muted, medium-dark bluish teal with cool undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-sheer color payoff with a very soft, powdery consistency that was hard to build up. It wore well for six hours.

Les Annees Folles #6

Les Annees Folles #6 is a light pink with warm undertones and a lightly sparkled, shimmery finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a soft, lightly powdery texture that blended out easily and wasn’t too dusty on the lid. This shade started to crease after five and a half hours on me.

Les Annees Folles #7

Les Annees Folles #7 is a msoft, medium orange with warm, golden shimmer. It had semi-opaque color coverage, but the texture was looser and powdery, which made it harder to work with as it would sheer out and appear uneven on the lid. I noticed creasing after six hours of wear.

Les Annees Folles #8

Les Annees Folles #8 is a light, bright white with a sparkling finish. It had decent color payoff, but the texture was drier and chunkier, so a lot of the shimmer separated from the base color, which made the base color appear even sheerer applied. It wore well for six hours on me.

Well phooey. I’m a huge Cle de Peau fan and this was the only palette that looked interesting to me this year. I wear sheerer colors but this looks like it’s spreading sparklies everywhere. I shan’t bother for that price.

Christina Avatar

That’s so interesting that the palette as a whole has softer pigmentation, but the eye look you created looks like it packs a punch. It’s an easy pass for me, though, as I think I can find someone colors in my own stash.

I like the Art Deco design and embossing, but the Cle de Peau formula just doesn’t hold up well on my super oily lids even with strong primer 🙁 My oily lids just eat them alive. I had to exchange their Stardust quad for the Satin Moon quad, which is probably their best and most pigmented one, and it got good reviews, but all the colors blend into one on my lids, and they don’t last as long either.

TGIW! (Thank god I waited.) as always, thanks to you. It’s like a stage production with simply marvelous set design and costumes, and mediocre performance. Boy, that deco embossing really got me. Chrysler Bldg in eyeshadow. Wow. Cover design also lovely. Another case of form over function. (Didn’t dare say trumping, on this of all days.) it had slid off my radar with my new low/no buy, but, I think this is an embarrassment to CdP. I know CdP is under the Shiseido umbrella, as is NARS, iirc. It’s extra bad when a glamorous, luxe holiday edition performs as if it were an outsourced product.

This sounds like a serious pain when it comes to the application…but the swatches and your eye look are intensely pigmented (except for the teal shade), so I don’t know what to make of it? Doesn’t really matter, though, because I’m not even *thinking* of dropping $125 on just 8 eyeshadows! Especially if they mainly rate just a C grade. ?

Lea Avatar

I hate seeing it with such a low rating, but I’m still happy with mine and have no regrets. I like the fact that there are bold colors in a soft build-able look; that type of pigment works for me and I do use a primer these days for most shadows. Plus you can better believe that I’ll be putting my regular quads in that case when I finish the shadows. Hopefully they’ll do next years release like this as well. I didn’t really miss the two blushes from prior years coffrets.

Lea Avatar

I recalled that you were a fan of the regular line and to me that means you gave this a fair shake and not just a review based on price. I’m still working on deciding on my favorite combination so far; I have so many new shadows in over the past few weeks I’ve been rotating a lot. I did wear the Nars Indes Galantes duo with the teal shade in the outer corner and liked that look – it made for a nice splash without screaming TEAL, which was a plus for me. The burgundy shade is where my eye is always drawn on this – enough to overlook the bright pink and teal that I never thought I’d touch. I’m thinking the burgundy with the grey and maybe the peach on the inner corners might be my next look? It’ll depend on my derm visit tomorrow though; I have either an allergic reaction or chemical/product interaction on my cheeks and forehead from something I used over the weekend and I’m very, very grumpy about it. Hopefully it calms down/clears up quickly. For now, my make-up is non-existent so as not to irritate anything further.

Lea Avatar

Thank you Christine! I feel a bit Quasimodo-like at the moment, though it’s not nearly that bad – I know it’s there. I have a feeling I either mixed my retinol with something I shouldn’t have or it was one of the two sample products I was trying (or the combo of all of them) that just freaked my skin out. I’ve used retinol and the Exfolikate before for quite a long time, just not sure if I’d ever done them back to back; Exfolikate had been out of my rotation for some time with the Dennis Gross peel pads and Sunday Riley oils. I’m only using my La Mer cream and oil right now and that’s kept everything from getting crazy itchy at least.

Maria Avatar

Your review isn’t that different from others that I have read. There are just two that gave it a better score. I have this eye palette and I like it very much but I guess I do like a more sheer coverage so it performs well for me.

Raluko Avatar

I loved the colors in this one (I`m so beyond tired of neutrals, can we get on to a new trend already?), bought it and actually returned it. It was kind of embarrassing because I live in Japan and unless you`ve had a major allergic reaction or something like that, it is really unusual to return cosmetics. But this was EXPENSIVE! and such poor performance. I love understated shadows, I`m a big fan of Estee Lauder`s shades, but these literally melted off my eyes even with primer. Anyway, the CDP counter in Kobe was kind enough to give me store credit and weren`t even that surprised at my complaint.

Fran Avatar

At first glance this palette appealed to me because of having some lighter, brighter colors in it. But, in addition to the poor quality (crazy at the price), on closer examination there aren’t really that many colors in it that would look great on me. Easy pass…
