ColourPop Viper & Notion Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks Review, Photos, Swatches
ColourPop Viper Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick
ColourPop Viper Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a deep, medium-dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The color was fantastic, and it’s more unique than not, but there was something amiss with the formula, as it dried down and some areas were darker and pinker and other areas were grayer. It was like an ombre lip look gone bad! I thought it hadn’t dried down, but it had (no transfer and didn’t look different hours later). It applied well from the tube, and the product was fully opaque on the lips. The texture was clingy, and it did have noticeable “cracking” when I smiled; I could definitely feel I was wearing a liquid lipstick. This shade stayed on for over six hours with minimal changes in color/intensity, but it was drying. Marc Jacobs Beauty Vinyl Dream (P, $30.00) is glossier (90% similar). Makeup Geek Tomboy (P, $12.00) is lighter, cooler, glossier (90% similar). ColourPop Are & Be (DC, $6.50) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Smashbox Spoiler Alert (P, $24.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). MAC Oh Lady (P, $21.00) is darker (85% similar). NARS London Calling (P, $26.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Lumiere 2 (DC, $6.50) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). Makeup Geek Urbanista (P, $12.00) is darker, cooler, glossier (85% similar). MAC Evening Rendezvous (LE, $19.00) is lighter, cooler (80% similar). ColourPop Bad Habit (DC, $6.50) is lighter, brighter (80% similar). NARS Dirty Mind (P, $27.00) is darker, cooler (80% similar). ColourPop Back Up (P, $6.00) is lighter, cooler (80% similar). ColourPop Bijou (LE, $7.00) is cooler (80% similar). MAC Winifred (LE, $19.00) is darker, cooler, glossier (80% similar). ColourPop Notion Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a deep berry with subtle, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. This shade took an hour to dry down for me! The majority of the color dried down within a minute or two, but there were parts of it that stayed shiny for an hour. It had mostly opaque color payoff, and the texture was thin but fluid and spread easily across the lips, so it was a cinch to get even coverage out of the formula. The color lasted for eight hours but was drying over time. ColourPop Darling (LE, $7.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Fallen Angel (LE, $21.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Sumac (LE, $19.00) is glossier (90% similar). Tarte Acid Wash (P, $20.00) is less glossy (95% similar). MAC High Drama (P, $21.00) is warmer (85% similar). Makeup Geek Rocker Chick (P, $12.00) is lighter (85% similar). MAC Oh Lady (P, $21.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Smashbox Femme Fatale (P, $21.00) is lighter, brighter (80% similar). Make Up For Ever M501 (DC, $22.00) is lighter, brighter (80% similar). Chanel Muted Fuchsia (124) (P, $40.00) is lighter (80% similar). ColourPop Alchemist (P, $10.00) is lighter (80% similar). Pat McGrath Deep Orchid (P, $38.00) is lighter, glossier (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Formula Overview
ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a long-wearing, pigmented lipstick that starts off glossy and dries down quickly to that super flat matte finish. They have minimal transfer with some of the lighter shades having almost none for the first few hours of wear, but anytime you’ve had a meal, they lose that transfer-resistant quality to a noticeable degree. They tend to wear anywhere from six to ten hours with darker shades maintaining better color coverage and wear over a longer period of time. Some shades get a little drying about two-thirds to three-fourths through the wear, while a few shades have been fairly non-drying even many hours into wear. They fade away evenly with most color loss occurring from the center of the lips if eating a more oil-based meal but the majority of color survives a meal. Reapplication has been hit or miss and tends to depend on how well it wore away and how easily the shade applies normally, but reapplication tends to emphasize the lip’s natural texture significantly compared to initial application and gives lips a very wrinkled, dried-up look. I’ve layered gloss on top of some shades with moderate success, though it will obviously lose the matte finish and will transfer and I’ll get tiny flakes where the matte lip color has lifted by mixing with gloss but has been pretty minimal. The formula had no discernible taste or scent.

These are both very interesting colours and I give ColouroPop credit since the dupes show more variance than usual. But I would much rather purchase these as a lippie stix. Liquid lipstick and these two shades in particular are a definite no go for my 53 year old lips. Sometimes CP runs a particular shade in the two formulas; hoping this will be the case here.
I hope they’ll keep adding to the Lippie Stix range, just because liquid lipstick isn’t for everyone!
Agreed!! I love the idea of them but my lips are too dry for liquid mattes. I’ve had to sit out the matte liquid trend and it makes me sad BC between the shades and the length of wear it would be ideal.
So much for my other freebie (Viper)! I wish they had given away the Ultra Satins instead, it seemed like those were a lot more consistent and successful, formula-wise. Hopefully the items that I actually purchased will all fare better 🙂
Maybe yours will be better! 🙂
I’m kind of surprised Viper managed to pull off a B. That lipstick looks to be really poor quality in the photos …
A lot of it is general pigmentation + long-wear with the liquid lipstick category (in general).
Viper is so pretty, but sounds like torture to wear. It looks dry, painful even to smile, I wish someone would make that color in a traditional lipstick formula. I love the intensity of Notion
These would be sooo cool to see in the Lippie Stix range!
I have a similar color to Viper from Sephora’s in house line. It’s not nearly as matte, but does a similar, strange color transformation as the day wears on where it goes from a deep, pinkish-plum to a weird sort of “greige” in the center of my lips. I wonder if it’s something with those particular pigments wearing poorly?
Do you happen to remember the name, Melanie?
Interesting to hear how it also changes on you, though! Very curious…
It’s “Mmm…”
And no, that’s not me thinking. That’s really the name. It’s from the Rouge Cream line and they call it a muted, sandy pink, which it is against white — but definitely reads cooler on my lips. You can find it here:

Haha!
Thank you, Melanie! 🙂
Notion is quite pretty.
It is!
I find it interesting how much deeper than on out of the tube. Notion is gorgeous!
Notion is so rich!
Viper is a nice color!
The color is pretty!
You can definitely see the weird ombre effect in your full face photo. Is it possible that the product was thicker there? The texture looks a bit different too in the close up.
It’s possible, but I didn’t apply it any differently than any other liquid lipstick, which is to do the bottom lip first, then the top lip, and then go back and make sure the edges are even!
My Kat Von D matte liquid lipsticks do this, they look ombre because they look lighter in the middle, I’m not sure why?! I don’t mind it most of the time but it is odd.
I got Notion last week and love it!
Awesome! Do you have any issues with it taking awhile to dry down?
It took a while but I didn’t notice it taking as long as an hour!
Gorgeous and unique colors, but I wish CP would fix the formula issues and inconsistencies on the Ultra Mattes.
Inconsistency is probably one of the worst things a formula can have going on 🙁 Even worse when you’re an online only brand like ColourPop.
Oh nooooo. I NEED them both!! They’re right up my alley!!
Enjoy!
I think liquid lipsticks are more trouble then they are worth, that being said perhaps the darker colors don’t look as stark on the lips as the paler, or lighter colors. That being said, Notion looks A-mazing on you. What is the blush on your cheeks?
There are some I like – I am not someone who really needs color to last 8+ hours so I’d rather reapply than deal with liquid lipstick!
Chanel Evening Beige Blush, Chanel Rosewood Blush!
Lovely colours, but no, I’ll pass.
Totally understand!
Hi Christine! I had the same problem with viper, but I read online that some of these were kinda separated so I shook them a bit, reapplied it, and I had no more problems! 🙂
Weird! I shake all liquid lipsticks prior to using 🙁
I just received Viper in the mail today as one of my freebies – I can’t wait to try it out, the color is sooo pretty, perfect for fall. If I have the same problem with the dry-down/wear as you did, I plan on just topping it off with a similar color sheer lip gloss. Problem solved.
Another reader said hers went on better after shaking! I shake all the liquid lipsticks up prior to using, but I’ll have to try shaking that one extra to see if helps!!
Notion looks really good on you!
Thanks, Claire!
Colourpop and their very iffy liquid matte lipsticks just perplex me. They seem to get almost everything else right, but with these, one never knows *what* they’re going to get with one of these! Viper is just weird. On the arm swatch, I can definitely see the odd two-tone. On your lips, I sort of see it, but I can really notice the dryness even more. Looks uncomfortable!
Notion, on the other hand, looks amazing! Moister, evenly pigmented and something I know I’d actually wear if I didn’t own dupes of it. Notion is a win!
They seem to be quite inconsistent! Probably the only thing consistent is that most wear pretty long.
Both colors look beautiful, despite their shortcomings. I ordered some stuff from CP to take advantage of the promo they ran in which you could score free ultra mattes if you spend over a certain amount. I spent over $25 so I got to choose 2. I ended up choosing viper and time square, but I was really tempted to spend an extra $15 to also get notion for free but talked myself out of it. It is very pretty though so maybe I’ll eventually just buy it as part of a future order! Anyway, I have a few of their ultra mattes and they are super drying but i keep coming back for more because of a)their color range and b)these suckers really do last!! I applied Clueless just before 7pm. I ate a heavy dinner and there’s still a noticeable stain on my lips and its 12:30am!
That is amazing wear, Irene, that you’re getting out of Clueless!
Both colors are quite unique ! I’m impressed on that front. Still, I also would love it if CP added these colors to another range. Matte liquid lipsticks can be so tricky!
That is true!
I decided to got Viper after reading everyone’s comment on the beautiful shade and also searched a lot of swatches. However when it’s applied to my lips, it turned into a complete purple! I was really surprised how the variance could be so big!
I have really pale lips so usually the lipstick will appear really close to the tube color, if not a little cooler than it’s swatched on the arm.
i didn’t expect it to look like a Halloween purplish witch color when everyone’s been complimenting how “fall” this shade is (not that the shade is bad, but it’s completely different color that let me down :'( )
