MAC Dare to Wear: Eyeshadows, Part 2

First, make sure you’ve read Part 1. In this post, you’ll notice four blue-based shades–this collection is definitely skewed towards blue. There are three permanent shades here: Sky Blue, Atlantic Blue, and Winkle; the first available only at PRO, the latter two at all freestanding stores.

  • Zingy is a medium blue that leans just a little green. It’s a less intense version of Electric Eel eyeshadow. It was also a little fussy to get to layer right in a swatch–though it’s pretty once it comes together.
  • Sky Blue is a soft, pale sky blue with silvery-white shimmer in a frost finish. It’s a little on the sheer side and can be a bit dusty. This is a permanent PRO shade.
  • Atlantic Blue is an intense shade of deep blue with a violet undertone in a matte finish. This is one of my favorite shades–period! This is a permanent PRO shade.
  • Winkle is a softened cornflower blue with a satin finish. It needs to be layered to get a nice level of intensity, but it has a very buttery texture. This is a permanent shade.
  • Shock-a-holic is a medium-dark purple with strong red undertones in a matte finish. It’s a little brighter, richer version of Vibrant Grape; brighter/purpler version of Nocturnelle or Fig 1.
  • Crazy Cool is a shimmery cool-toned lilac with a silver-white sheen in a veluxe pearl finish. It’s a darker version of Digit and a lighter version of Beautiful Iris. It’s a little on the sheer side and not as smooth as I’d expect for a veluxe pearl.

So pretty I like Crazy Cool a lot! <3 Can somebody answer a question I have? I want to know if these are in MAC stores? And if they are how long will they be available? Thanks so much <3

Thank you!!! I’m taking a shopping trip at the end of August and I’m picking up some MAC items and I want Sassy Grass. 🙂

Christine,
Do you find Shock-a-holic easier to work with than Vibrant Grape? I have a really hard time getting a good pay off on that one and I am putting it up for sale cause it doesn’t work for me.
Liking the colour maybe Shock-a-holic will be better?

Ashley Avatar

I really like the slight green tinge to Zingy! I think I might end up with Going Bananas and Zingy even though I keep trying to talk myself out of Zingy! I really want Shock-a-holic, but I think I might get Sugarpill’s Poison Plum instead since it seems like Shock-a-holic might be harder to work with.

Nellie Avatar

How does Zingy compare to Urban Decay’s Dashiki? And how does Shock-a-holic compare to Psychedelic Sister? Obviously the finishes are different, but I’m wondering how similar the colors themselves are. (Trying to talk myself out of things!) Also, what are the textures of these mattes like? I have trouble with lots of MAC’s mattes, so I’m hesitant to pick a lot of this collection up.

Jennifer Avatar

I have green eyes (well one is blue-green but shhhh) NC20 and dark brown hair…Not sure I could wear blues or greens from this collection. I like “Shock-a-holic” though. I’m just thinking “do I need it”? I have “Vibrant grape” Nocturnelle” “Beautiful Iris” and “Stars and rockets.” I barely wear colors on my eyes…But I love purple.

What do you think?

Lina Avatar

The blues are so pretty! even though i don’t wear blue eyeshadows, i’m tempted just to get one because my favorite color is blue! zingy looks so bold and bright 🙂

DawnC Avatar

Christine — did you like the texture of Crazy Cool? It is a Veluxe Pearl, but I don’t think it lives up to the normal quality. I have it on hold, and may skip. Thanks!

Ashley Avatar

I really need to get Sky Blue and Crazy Cool, though I am really not sure how to wear these. Christine, would you be willing to do a tutorial or two with some of these eyeshadows?

GinaB Avatar

I was wondering if you thought that Zingy was anything like Electric Eel. (i could be way off haha but i was wondering your opinion) and i was also wondering what about Crazy cool you don’t really care for. Thank you so much!

GinaB Avatar

I’m sorry i just realized that you said it was a little less intense version of Electric Eel! Which one would you recommend formula wise?

Alyssa Avatar

Hey,

I don’t know if you meant to say winkle is a matte finish, but its actually a Satin.

Thanks for you review too, made me realize I don’t “need” crazy cool as much as I may want it.

Emily Avatar

Do you know how Crazy Cool compares the mineralize duo from last christmas? I think it was called devil-may-care and had lavender/silver.

Rosanna Avatar

I have Sky Blue and Atlantic Blue and honestly……..they’re not working for me.

Atlantic Blue – I know you love it and try to love it as well but it’s just not working out well. Not a lot goes on the brush and it’s hard to blend it out – still trying to make it work though.

Sky Blue – grr…I love blues but when I put this in a look, I never like how the colour turns out (whitish-silver with a TiNy hint of blue) and I just end up mixing with the medium colour. >_>

Jenna Avatar

I was wondering why you chose Crazy Cool as the “Skip” item. Is the quality lacking? It’s the only colour that appeals to me, lol.

Emily Avatar

Do you know how Crazy Cool compares to Devil-May-Care (from last Christmas)…sorry if I already asked this…I double checked the shade and that’s what it’s called.

Jennifer Avatar

Hey Christine, another comparison if you don’t mind. How does Shock-a-holic compare to Sugarpill’s Poison Plum? And if you had to decide between the two which would you choose. Thanks for your time. 🙂

sherri Avatar

off topic but i brought a mac 189 brush from mac today and i noticed that my brush didnt have a location stamped into it..like france or japan…is this unusual? does your 189 have a location stamp?

inaya Avatar

hey chrisitne! what was that really helpful tip one of the commenters had about MACs manufacturing dates? those A69 numbers and all. i completely forgot.

SunlitCactus Avatar

Hey Christine. Your site has become a daily necessity for me and a must read before purchasing.
Just wanted to say that I think it is SO AWESOME that you respond to every question. I actually started reading the comments regularly because your responses actually make it feel like a discussion section!
Also, I wanted to say that I think “Free to Be” is practically an exact dupe of “Perky” from Spring Forecast. Any thoughts on this? Am I crazy? I haven’t heard anyone make that comparison.

Looooove these shades. I’m so bummed that this eyeshadow is only available in our Pro MAC store in Amsterdam. I live far away so now I can’t get Shock-o-holic 🙁

shakz Avatar

Hey Christine thanks for the swatches really appreciate it, was just wondering if you would be able to do some looks using some of these shades for a little inspiration???

Rengirl Avatar

Wow. A collection of bold shades many leaning towards blue – sign me up! I’ve only had mild, if any, reaction to Mac collections but this one actually has me wanting to go to Mac (it has been at least 8 years since I bought any Mac).

Cherie Avatar

What a fun collection! I loved the colours but would hardly touch them so I only got Crazy Cool with B2M 🙂 It was different enough from the MAC perm. shades to get… for me at least. But I’m a sucker for purples. Shock was chalky 🙁

Thanks for the swatches, Christine!

shakz Avatar

I noticed you said that some of the colours require some packing on; I was just wondering which M.A.C. brush is the best for this??? As at the moment I’m using a non branded brush which just doesn’t cut it with matte colours such as chrome yellow etc. Would defiantly appreciate the help as I am looking to purchase some of these colours and so will be needing a decent brush to work with.

AnGeLwInGz Avatar

Thanks for the swatches Christine! I got Zingy, Sky Blue, and Atlantic Blue today (also got others but they’re not related to today’s DTW). The Atlantic Blue was purchased on your recommendation alone. It’s really not a color I would normally choose for myself because it’s so dark and matte. I haven’t tried it out yet. As of right now I can only think of wearing it in the crease. What’s your favorite way to use it?

Roxanne Avatar

Woo! Dare To Wear just hit stores here!! I think I might skip Zingy because it’s so close to Electric Eel (right?). I’m going to try to get my hands on Going Bananas. Do you think Crazy Cool is a good choice if you don’t have any purples? Digit might be too light for my taste! Also, is Louder, Please similar to Passionate (but less pink perhaps?)?? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks 🙂

abby Avatar

Hi Christine!!! what would you pair sky blue eyeshadow with? would it go with aqua eyeshadow you think?? i would like to get both eyeshadows but i dont know how to wear them! am an NC30, thank you!! 🙂

Karli Avatar

I’ve got a quick question. How does Crazy Cool compare to the lightest color in the Togetherness mineralize eyeshadow trio from In The Groove? Would you suggest one over the other?
