Urban Decay x Gwen Stefani 714 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “classic red.” It’s a medium red with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. The 714 lipstick pulled warm to my eye, and when I swatched them side-by-side, it definitely has an orange-tint and is lighter, while the lip pencil looks almost muted and berry-ish in comparison. Together, they layer and create a very true, retro red. The texture of the pencil was much less waxy compared to the formula I’m used to, and it is less comfortable to apply and wear. It lasted for six hours or longer (it was still going strong after six hours), but it was drying on its own. Urban Decay 69 (P, $20.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Ruby Woo (P, $17.50) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). Pat McGrath Blood Lust (PiP, $25.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Cherry (P, $17.50) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Follow Your Heart (LE, $17.50) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Trust in Red (P, $19.50) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). MAC RiRi Woo (LE, $19.50) is darker, brighter (95% similar). MAC Freehand (LE, $15.00) is more muted (90% similar). ColourPop Fighter (DC, $5.00) is lighter (90% similar). ColourPop Come, We Fly (LE, $5.00) is darker, warmer (80% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Devil Inside (Lip Shaper) (PiP, ) is more shimmery, lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Urban Decay x Gwen Stefani Rock Steady 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “blood red.” It’s a slightly muted, medium-dark red with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, but it had similar issues with texture that made it harder to apply evenly. It had a tendency to drag and skip, so short, feathery strokes are a must, and it’s not my ideal formula for filling in lips entirely but would be tolerable to outline with. The color wore well for at least six hours but was very drying. Urban Decay Bad Blood (P, $20.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Freehand (LE, $15.00) is cooler (90% similar). Urban Decay Mrs. Mia Wallace (LE, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). ColourPop Come, We Fly (LE, $5.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Devil Inside (Lip Shaper) (PiP, ) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (80% similar). MAC Kiss Me Quick (P, $19.50) is more muted (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Urban Decay x Gwen Stefani Wonderland 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “dark pink-red.” It’s a medium-dark, fuchsia-red with strong, blue-toned pink undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff that went on slightly unevenly as the texture was thinner and less creamy, so it drags a little and is harder to apply. It was incredibly drying and clingy on, which was disappointing as the 24/7 formula is my absolute favorite for lip pencils as it is one of the more comfortable ones to apply and wear (like one of the few that I typically find lightly drying or non-drying!). It was still mostly intact after six hours of wear. MAC Follow Your Heart (LE, $17.50) is warmer (95% similar). Bite Beauty #078 (P, $18.00) is warmer (95% similar). ColourPop Hot Cakes (LE, $5.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Trust in Red (P, $19.50) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay 69 (P, $20.00) is lighter (85% similar). ColourPop Spinster Ladies (LE, $5.00) is more muted (85% similar). MAC Selenaville (LE, $17.50) is lighter (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Secret Escort (Lip Shaper) (PiP, ) is more shimmery, lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

* It’s going to take me under later in the week to get to the other three lip pencils. These caused some lingering damage to my lips due to how drying they were, and frankly, that’s not something I associate with Urban Decay’s 24/7 Lip Pencil formula. These lacked the glide that I’ve always loved Urban Decay’s lip pencils for. According to Urban Decay, the formula is designed to have long-wear, prevent feathering, be creamy, waterproof, go on smoothly, and “nourish the skin” — just for reference.

Oh no! I hope your lips feel better soon, sounds like torture 🙁 I like my lip liners a little drier, so it holds up under multiple layers. I usually outline my lips, then add a few strokes on the lips themselves (but not the entire lip), then put lipstick and an SPF lip balm on top. Do you think I will be ok if do that?

Nicole Avatar

Well, this stinks! Why would UD not use the same formula?! I already ordered all of them! I also had to place two orders because I woke up and saw only a few things up so I thought everything had sold out. So, I placed one order. Then, the rest came up later. So, I ordered the rest of the stuff and accidentally ordered a second Plaid. They can’t modify it they say. So, I have to return already. I have lots of red liners. I’m sending these back. There is no reason for them not to use their 24/7 formula, espescially at this price! I don’t see why Gwen Steffani would slap her name on a subpar product. She is an icon to me and that is so upsetting to me. UGH!

Raeanne Avatar

Oh my gosh! The drying / damaging formula is so unacceptable! I would totally understand if you didn’t review the other shades and just provided dupes. I hate to think of how many people will buy these simply because of the celebrity collaboration despite their lackluster formula.

Bonnie Avatar

Oh heck no to the lingering damage to your lips!!! Sad to hear that Christine. I’ve decided I’m just gonna say no to this whole collection. I re-read the blush review and even though they got decent reviews, the descriptions you wrote for the individual shades make them sound kinda iffy. The one where it’s “so soft it crumbles when you touch the brush to it”…and OC having a yellow undertone so it creates a jaundiced look… no thanks, I don’t need that! 😉
Basically the whole line seems lesser quality. Pass.

Christine Avatar

lol! OC is very interesting, but it’s almost a “pretty ugly” shade as a blush, I guess. I dig it, but I don’t know if everyone will, especially once they get it ON the face, you know? I think this might be the year of duochrome blush, though!

Bonnie Avatar

Christine I thought the exact same thing when I first read that it was duochrome – it was like, “duh! Why hasn’t this been done already? It seems like a no-brainier!!!” I would/will totally buy duochrome blush. But maaayyybe not if it makes me look jaundiced! Surely someone can create one with a more flattering effect! Haha.
Oh and it’s also the year of the crazy colored highlighters!!! Jeffree star is coming out with an ice blue one later this year! I think that’s so cool! (No pun intended!)

Mary Avatar

The colors look really nice on you(especially Rock Steady). Sorry that the formula damaged your lips. Thank you, for all you do, with reviewing so much for the benefit of others! 🙂

Owwwwie!!! Your poor lips! I know how that can be, not fun!

And yet, I cannot help wondering how this formula compares to my HG, beloved Nyx Slim Lip Pencils or MAC lip pencils, as both wear like iron, keep my lipstick on my lips instead of wandering, and last through my eating whatever I want! Even when my lipstick fades, those 2 brands of liner are still hanging on. But I only outline and smudge it inward a bit, not cover my whole lip, because too drying.

Grace Avatar

Your poor lips! Hopefully the next batch is better. I ordered phone call today when I got the blush palette because I’ve been looking for a match to the pink Viva Glam Miley Cyrus, and all the others had already sold out.

Claire L Avatar

They look good on you but the drying side effect puts me off, I think the lipsticks on their own are good enough. Poor you, having sore dry lips! I quite understand you deciding to take a break from the testing of these pencils!

It’s too bad the performance on these isn’t good! I was interested in Rock Steady, Wonderland, and Firebird, because I usually like UD’s lip pencils, too. Have you tried Besame’s double-ended pencil for reds? I like it. I also have a red Clinique quickliner pencil that works with most of my reds. It’s nice for just lining because it’s so thin. I like OCC’s pencils, too. And Laura Mercier’s (though hers are a bit harder/drier). And I do want to try the Hourglass pencils and the new Sephora “gel” pencils. With my easily-chapped lips I have to have a bit of (blotted) balm or primer under anything else I put on my lips, though, so I don’t know how drying the different products would be on absolutely bare lips.
