Tom Ford Vladimir Lip Color ($35.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a muted, medium taupe brown with subtle, warm undertones and a pale, golden shimmer. It looked almost lavender-ish applied as it wasn’t fully opaque, so the taupe tones meshed with the natural pink found in my lip color. This is one of the more frosted shades in the range. It had semi-opaque coverage with a lightly creamy texture that applied fairly evenly. The color wore well for four hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. If you want unique, this would be one of the most unique in the launch of 25. Maybelline Silk Stone (P, $7.49) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). MAC Soft Sable (LE, $19.00) is darker (85% similar). Sephora Take a Spin (41) (P, $8.00) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics St. Sebastian (DC, $17.00) is less shimmery, darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Tom Ford Roman Lip Color ($35.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a smoky, subdued taupe-brown with cooler undertones in the base with green-gold pearl shimmer. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a creamy consistency that didn’t tug on the lips and felt comfortable on. The color wore well for almost five hours and was lightly hydrating. MAC I'm Glistening (LE, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Detox (LE, $30.00) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (85% similar). Pretty Vulgar Artful Deception (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). MAC Icon (P, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). MAC Viva Glam Rihanna 2 (LE, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Urban Decay Studded (DC, $18.00) is darker, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Tom Ford Egon Lip Color ($35.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark mauve with neutrla-to-cool undertones and a frosted shimmer-sheen finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that applied evenly and didn’t feel heavy or clingy on. The lipstick wore well for four and a half hours, and it was lightly moisturizing. I felt like this was another more unique shade. MAC Whirls & Twirls (LE, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). Anastasia Sunset Punch (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, brighter, less pigmented (85% similar). MAC Gemz and Roses (P, $21.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Urban Decay Rebel (LE, $18.00) is darker, warmer (80% similar). MAC Concord Grape (LE, $25.00) is less shimmery, darker (80% similar). MAC I Love Winter (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Tom Ford Eddie Lip Color ($35.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a muted, light-medium brown with champagne gold shimmer. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque coverage, which went on fairly evenly, but I noticed the shimmer didn’t spread out as evenly as it could have. The texture was comfortable to wear and wasn’t gritty. It was neither drying nor hydrating over the four-hour wear time. MAC All I Want (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Chanel Patchouli (DC, $34.00) is warmer (90% similar). NARS Redemption (LE, $29.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Uh-huh Honey (P, $29.00) is darker, glossier (85% similar). Maybelline Silk Stone (P, $7.49) is cooler (85% similar). MAC By Design (LE, $19.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Spanish Flame (02) (LE, $53.00) is cooler (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty William (LE, $36.00) is warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Tom Ford Derek Lip Color ($35.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a medium-dark, reddish plum with a ton of warm, gold shimmer. It had nearly opaque color coverage with a creamy, lightly emollient texture that was comfortable to wear. The formula was moderately hydrating and lasted for five hours on me. Tom Ford Beauty Blake (LE, $36.00) is lighter, less pigmented, cooler (95% similar). MAC Caliente (LE, $19.00) is darker (85% similar). Urban Decay Accident (DC, $18.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). NYX Wrath (P, $6.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Conspiracy (DC, $18.00) is darker, warmer (80% similar). MAC Carnal Instinct (LE, $19.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Maybelline Molten Bronze (P, $7.49) is darker, cooler (80% similar). MAC I Get So OOC (LE, $19.00) is cooler (80% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Omar (LE, $36.00) is lighter, warmer (80% similar). NARS Maltese Red (P, $26.00) is more shimmery, darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA OVERVIEW | Tom Ford Lips & Boys Lip Colors ($35.00 for 0.07 oz.) are “clutch-sized” lipsticks; it uses the same formula as the full-sized Lip Colors (which retail for $52 for 0.10 oz.), but the packaging feels the same, just smaller. Tom Ford’s lipstick formula is supposed to be hydrating, pigmented, and have a more luminous finish (there is also a specifically Matte formula available that is much flatter in finish). This year’s launch of Lips & Boys features 25 new shades that are part of the new “metallic” finish, and then the return of 25 shades from last year. In general, the formula is semi-opaque to opaque with a lightly creamy consistency that doesn’t slide around a lot but doesn’t cling to the lips. I get anywhere from three to six hours of wear out of them, and most shades are lightly hydrating over time. The formula is vanilla-scented with no discernible taste.

Thank you so much for all of these swatches and reviews. It makes me happy that I ordered them. I was on the fence while waiting for the swatches but now that I see all of the colors it makes me excited to get my order. These are some pretty special colors that are somewhat unique without being over the top or unwearable.

First, I don’t think it’s quite fair for one person to be able to pull off so many unusual lip colors! 😉 You always rock them in your review photos.

Second, I was hoping to knock a few of these off my list, as they’re the more unusual shades in the line and are fairly similar. Alas, I think I added one! They seem a little more wearable up close, but they remind me of some of the late 90s brown shades I used to wear.

If I got rich tomorrow, I would have to buy all 5 of these! These are gorgeous. But for the time being, I would choose Derek. It’s unusual enough that even it’s dupes don’t quite capture it’s nuances! Vladimir is another stunner, but one I would probably put with a wilder or smoked eye look, as it’s sort of “nude” in a way. Time to put aside $70!

I’m really, really tempted by Vladimir, Egon, Eddie, and Derek, for some reason, even though I’m not normally one to get frosty lipsticks. I’m trying to decide which ones will look best with my NC15 complexion and pigmented lips, though. Don’t want to waste $35 on something that doesn’t look right! I’m most tempted by

I’m obsessed with Derek on you, it goes perfect with your coloring! I haven’t purchased many high end lipsticks, mostly because lipstick is the one makeup product I feel I haven’t full mastered yet… but Derek is too tempting and I had to get it. Thanks for the great reviews, Christine! You haven’t steered me wrong yet. 🙂

Veronica Avatar

I would think so. The hint of pink or red does worlds to make them more “natural” looking. If it weren’t for how many lipsticks I already own, Egon and Derek would be very tempting!

the one thing ive noticed about the tom ford lips and boys line is that the shades tend to be quite unique/odd, definitely not shades that you see a lot of people wear. while it’s great for consumers to have a wider selection, i cant help but wonder how well frosty light shades like eddie or vladimir would sell…

Hey Christine, great review! After seeing this I went out to buy Derek! Turns out they were sold out, but Tom Ford’s Casino from the regular lipstick line is a perfect dupe. I couldn’t tell which was which from the swatches! It was more expensive but at least it was a full size. Just wanted to share! Thanks I love the blog!

OH WOW Egon is a beauty! It’s my favorite among the bunch. All of them looked unique and wearable though but Egon is an instant fave. It just sucks that TFB is not available in my country.. Thanks for the swatches!

I’m freaking out over Roman. There is like .5% chance I would ever wear it but what an awesome color! I love how cool-toned it is and how interesting! I think I might get Derek for its blend of golds and rusty colors. Agh, why do they have to be so beautiful?!
