MAC Artificially Wild Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches
MAC Artificially Wild Lipsticks
In the upcoming MAC Artificially Wild Collection, it appears MAC has brought back some classic, 90s favorites for a limited time.
MAC Icon Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “frosted neutral beige [with a Frost finish].” It’s a cool-toned, taupe-brown with a frosted, metallic shimmer. It had semi-opaque color coverage, which went on fairly evenly. It wore well for four and a half hours, but it was little drying. It’s a more unique shade when I look through past lipsticks I’ve reviewed. Bobbi Brown Twilight Shimmer (6) (P, $25.00) is warmer, glossier. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Photo Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “golden brown [with a Satin finish].” It’s a medium-dark brown with warm, orange and red undertones and a satiny finish. It had mostly opaque pigmentation that went on evenly. The color lasted for five hours and was neither hydrating nor drying while worn. It is part of the permanent range. NARS Deborah (P, $32.00) Maybelline Maple Kiss (925) (P, $7.49) Maybelline Mochachino (P, $7.49) MAC Tabla (P, $16.00) MAC Photo (P, $16.00) See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Shitake Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “deep brown glaze [with a Glaze finish].” It’s a muted, medium brown with subtle, warm undertones and a soft, frosted finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage and applied evenly. The consistency had a moderate amount of slip and glided across the lips easily. It lasted for three hours on me. As far as I can tell, this is the discontinued Shitaki, but I have it as Shitaki from years ago, yet this one is labeled Shitake both on the bottom of the lipstick and in the press release. Chanel Icone (55) (P, $34.00) is lighter. Chanel Patchouli (LE, $34.00) is rosier. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Marion (P, $18.00) is less shimmery, more opaque. Bobbi Brown Sunset Beach (LE, $23.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I like Icon a lot – if it’s part of the Back to Mac program I might get it. Not sure though if they allow that with new launches.
It seems to depend on the store!
Shitake actually looks wearable and pretty on you! I usually run away from shimmer so these aren’t exactly my kind of lipsticks!
Totally understand, Divya!
This reminds me so much of my lips circa 1995, I love it!
I wasn’t wearing makeup myself, but it is fun to see its return!
I though the same thing! We are back to 1990’s browns!!!!
Icon looks really pretty on you! And as we are same skintone i hope it look as good on me 🙂
I think it will!
90s lipsticks!! Do any Brits remember Rimmel’s Heather Shimmer or 17’s Chinchilla? Icon really reminds me of the latter!
Definitely a throwback to the 90s from what I can gather!
Yep, I had both of those and loved them so much! We just need them to bring them back now 😉
I thought exactly the same thing! I for one am glad to see 90s lipsticks back! Very ‘coffee shimmer’ 🙂
Of all the lipsticks in the collection Ii like Shitake the best. Siss and Yash make me look like a cadaver. definitely will try it when released.
Keep me posted if Shitake works for you, Lily!
How does MAC Photo compare to MAC X-S lipstick?
I thought I had reviewed X-S, but it doesn’t appear that I have, so I’m not sure I even have it!
I went through so many tubes of Siss and Shitake in the 90’s. They are shades that look outstanding on complexions NC40 and darker. I’ll be picking up all these lipsticks in this collection.
YAY! 🙂
Terrible, just terrible
Different strokes for different folks!
Oh, I like Icon and Shitake for me!
Of course all 3 colors look fab on you!
I really like the color of Icon!
Reminds me of the shades my mom used to wear back in the 90’s…
She used to always outline her lips with “spice.”
The correct spelling of the fungus is shitake, and the “ke” part is actually pronounced like kay not key. I guess MAC just wanted to fix the mistake this time.
That was my thought as well!
I actually like all three, I think I’ll have to get either Icon or Shitake when these come out. But one thing I’m apparently going to have to buy is Maybelline Maple Kiss, because it’s been listed as a dupe for two lip colours I liked the look of this week.
I’m really digging Icon!
I had an aunt who wore something very similar to Icon all the time in the 90’s… what a throwback! I didn’t expect to like these at all – as neither browns nor frosts typically do it for me – but they’re actually kind of intriguing!
They are!
I really like Shitake. Not sure how it would look on me (very pale)… but it might layer nicely over an orangish liner (like Mac chestnut), as an alternative to KVD’s Gothica (which I might return bc it was too glittery, although I liked the color). Is Shitake sheer enough to let a liner show through?
Yes, Shitake is definitely sheer enough!
I really, really want Icon!!!!!
It’s such a cool color!
I think I like Photo best, though I don’t know if any of these will flatter me. For some reason I don’t mind a brown, taupe or grey tone in a gloss but can’t do it in a lipstick. 🙂
I wore Explicit over Icon the other day and LOVED them together!
I’m not crazy about any of these unfortunately.
Aww!
You’ve just completed my Buffy Summers Halloween costume! Shitake is the perfect 90s lipstick.
Haha!
These lipsticks totally remind me of the 90s! I haven’t work frost ls since the 90s ended, but I previously swatched photo and I like it, but don’t think I could pull it off.
Looks like maybe the 90s are making a little comeback!
I actually like shitake! I was also too young in the 90’s to wear makeup, so I don’t have much to compare to all these browns. The first one is just too cool of a color for my tone but the second 2 are pretty!
Same here, Dani! Missed the whole decade as far as makeup went!
Not happy about the 90s’ lipstick trend coming back!
We’ll see just how much it comes back, I guess!
I went to the MAC counter at Macys and they only had Photo but it was a dark brown color, yours looks more orange.
Hmm, maybe brightness settings on your device? It’s a warm brown – kind of a yellow-orange tone to it, but it’s not orange.
Photo reminds me of Revlon’s Toast of New York. I think Cindy Crawford wore it in the print ads? I started wearing lipstick during that time, so I think this collection is great, for nostalgic reasons. Of course, I was in high school/college then, so my lipstick collection was limited to drugstore. (I was more of a L’oreal Real Raisin person myself.)
Is Toast of New York still around? Hmm…
Shades like this didn’t work on me in the 90’s.. so I’m quite certain they won’t now. I’ll be trying to work the warmer lipstick trend this fall by going with a darker red with a bit of brown. I saw some comments about Siss and Shitake and I was laughing so hard because I tried to wear both and yeah, it was laughabl, particularly Siss: one of my biggest MAC misses of the 90’s.
Did you wear Siss begrudgingly or did you acknowledge it didn’t work for you when you tried it?
It never made it out of the house.. One of those..
Icon seems like it could be awesome to layer with other colors, but I’m not a huge fan of the other two. Well, actually, Shitake isn’t too bad because of the shimmer, but I still think I’m passing.
I’m really digging Icon – more than I thought!
I’m sure these would look great on some skintones but on my fair, cool toned complexion brown lipstick is not something I gravitate to.
Icon might work – very cool-ish!
Icon is such an interesting shade that I almost feel like it could be an eyeshadow. Sounds a little stupid I know XD
It would be pretty as an eyeshadow shade! Breaking Ground CCB is kind of similar.
I’m so psyched about Icon!! Ive been studying beauty blogs for the past month looking for a perfect shimmery warm grey, and someone recommended this. Of course it was limited edition from awhile back, so I almost caved and bought one for $40 on eBay. Now I can get it for the normal retail price lol
Do you think it compares to Soft Sable from that glitter and ice collection a few years back? it’s one of those shades, every time I wear it, I regret only buying one. So if it’s close-ish…. even better 🙂
This collection is going to kill my bank account lol
Kind… of… I would say cooler-toned, darker… smokier in a way than Soft Sable, but they have a similar “feel” if that makes sense?
Nope Nope Nope. Not feeling these at all.
Money saved!
I’ll be passing 🙁 I hate all these colors
Bummer!
Big no0o0o0o to all 3.
More money for something else!
I haven’t had anything even close to these colors on my lips since my daughters were learning the alphabet. Now, I have an almost-one-year-old granddaughter and the browns are back! I really love the way Shitake looks on you. As for me, should I decide to pick up one of these, it seems that Icon would look best with my skin tone. The fact that it’s drying puts me off as I already have trouble keeping my lips moisturized.
Now we shall see if browns are making a real comeback 😉
I really like Icon and Shitake. Photo is too orange for me, but looks great on you.
Thanks, Rachel!
The more I look at Photo, the more I want it! I’ve really been in a ’90s brown mood lately.
I missed the 90s makeup, so I’m digging the throwback!
That’s it – I am going out to get Photo! Love all the colours but Photo is the best. Beautiful. I hope it has reached Australia…..
I hope Australia gets this launch!
Oh, those aren’t nearly as bad as I thought when I read “90s lipsticks” and “frosted”! They’re actually quite nice on you!
I kind of like Icon, actually. It speaks to the ’80’s/’90’s youth in me, LOL! It might just be that I like the way it looks on you though – you have pretty pink lips (sorry, not trying to be creepy :-P), so the overall effect is kind of a pretty frosted lilac. On my colourless lips, I suspect it might look a little…’futuristic’, hehe!
Icon is so fun!
I’ve been wanting Shitaki/e for years so I need to finally get it! Icon looks like how VG Rihanna 2 is going to be, but sheerer, so I’ll just wait for the one with the red velvet packaging :p
Perfect timing! I am very curious to see VG Rihanna 2!
i’m not a fan of frost lippies at all , but i’m kind of digging icon .
do you think it’s sheer enough to be layered on top ?
I think it could work!
Yay, MAC! After so many uninspiring products from them lately, they’ve come up with something fun and a bit different (even if two are re-launches).
I just hope everybody knows it’s pronounced “shih-TAH-ki” or there could be some red faces at the MAC counter 🙂
I feel like the repromotes make sense here, at least! 😀
I had decided I would hate this collection. But, no, I actually like it.
I really like Icon and Shitake and I must try them out when/if they get here. I do think I’ll try Photo as well. I wore makeup in the 90s, but I never got into the brownish lips. I still have one or two reds with a lot of brown in them, They wppeared to be OK last year when I tessted all my lipsticks, Wonder if they still are…
I love how you rock these three colours. It might be your ability to make everything look so good that makes me want all the lipsticks I see 🙂
Thank you, Helene! 🙂
I’m so excited for this collection! Definitely hoping brown lipstick gets more popular. I’m not very familiar with mac collections though, why do they promote an already permanent line item (like Photo) with the LE collection?
You’d honestly have to ask MAC! There’s no fact-based answer that I know of 🙂 We can guess and say it just might have been the right fit! Better they repromote than make one that’s like 95% the same, though 😀
So funny–I had every. Single. One of these lipsticks back in the early nineties! And I loooovvvvveeeed them. Now I look at them and think how horrible they’d look on me!
Awwwww!
Oh my!!! Want them all!!! Love love the colors!!!
Yay!!!
Icoooonnn!!!!!
I just pulled my old tube from my B2M bag a week ago because I was craving some silver-taupe l/s for some reason. My tube is from 2001! Dear God! It smells and it applies like a jerk but I am keeping it for nostalgic reasons. I’m happy they have re-released so I can actually use it and not gag after swiping it on lol!
Woohoo!! 🙂
I’ve always had sort of a soft spot for browns, sepias and golden tan colors because they go well with my skin tone and coloring. I am hoping this collection isn’t going to cause a major budget meltdown!
Fingers crossed!
How close are Mac Icon lipstick and Nyx round lipstick in Fortune Cookies ? Thank you.
Fortune Cookie is a lot lighter + warmer!
