MAC Surf Baby: Lipsticks

MAC Surf Baby Lipstick ($15.50 for 0.10 oz.) includes four shades: Bust Out! (dirty mid-tone violet), Hibiscus (bright orange coral), Mocha (peachy yellow-brown), and Naturally Eccentric (creamy white nude). Mocha is permanent and Naturally Eccentric (Naturally Eccentric, ’05) is a repromote.

  • Bust Out! is a semi-sheer to semi-opaque pinked purple with a lustre finish. It’s darker and less glossy compared to Playtime (Quite Cute, ’11). It’s darker, purpler, less fuchsia in comparison to Style Curve (Stylishly Yours, ’10). It seems a little pinker than Up the Amp (permanent).
  • Hibiscus is a brightened, medium-dark red-coral with soft gold shimmer. It has a cremesheen finish.  It’s like a richer, deep version of Viva Glam Cyndi.  It’s a little redder than Coral Polyp (Dame Edna, ’08). It’s a touch less bright than Toxic Tale, and the finish makes it appear a little different, too.
  • Mocha is a warm, medium-dark brown with yellow undertones. It has a satin finish, so the coverage is really opaque and the finisy very creamy.
  • Naturally Eccentric is a semi-opaque, really light nude which leans a little pink on me. It has a lustre finish. It’s a little less pink than Hue. I think the lustre finish gives it a slightly uneven look that’s less than lovely.

MAC lipsticks are vanilla scented but taste-free. Lustre finishes, like Bust Out! and Naturally Eccentric, are designed to be sheer with a slightly glossy finish, so the pigmentation on both is as expected. Mocha, as a satin finish, is creamy and opaque, as it should be. I typically get two to three hours of wear out of lustre finishes, with four to five hours of wear out of satin finishes.

Where to Buy: MAC Cosmetics, in-stores on May 26th

The Glossover

B

Naturally Eccentric seems like the hardest color in the collection wear--it is really, really light. I imagine it will wash out a lot of people, while Hibiscus will probably draw a lot of people in (corals always seem to do well).

Hi there, I would like to purchase hibiscus...but I'm too late, aren't I? Is it a part of their permanent line?

oh and hibiscus is probably the best shade i saw on you except some pinks :D so sweet

ahhhh wish i could find a cheap lipstick like naturally eccentric <3 thats sooo my nude :)) nevermind

Hibiscus is a gorgeous color and its very pretty on you! more orange, i like. but my questions is: how did you apply it and if/what lip liner did you use?

From the tube, no liner.

Hibiscus is sold out online :(...How does it compare to Cockney?

It's less red, more orange.

I didn't plan on buying any lipstick..but tried on hibiscus and fell in love!!!

Bust Out is so pretty...so is Hibiscus. I wish I had never looked! LOL

another quetion: if i got hibiscus and i taped it on the lips slightly sheerly i would get the color of viva galm cyndi on my lips more or less?

It would be close :) You might try layering a nude pencil underneath to tone it down.

since hidiscus is sold out almost every were, on pigmented lips what do you think would be the closest dupe/match?

is hibiscus more vibrant than VG Cyndi? Because I have VG Cyndi but Hibiscus seem prettier here:) do i need to get hibiscus too?

I love the Hibiscus shade. Is it a little orangey? I'm looking for a red-orange shade.

Would Hibiscus Look good on NC 42/43?

I love hibiscus, can't wait to get more!

wow, love hibiscus on you! but it looks sooo different to what it looks like on me :) on me it's like a matte crazy coral-orange color, which i love :) but still very different... a bit weird

why is it only a B overall when each category was rated at least in the eightieth percentile, which is an A?

The points are added up, then divided into 50, which is the total possible. This was 85%, which is a B. A is 94-97%.

So excited for Hibiscus!!! It's currently en route to me. I am so pleasantly surprised MAC Pro Discount was allowed on these special packaged items. Whatever the reason for the change of heart MAC, I thank you.

I got Hibiscus at a preview party & really like it. It's the first creme sheen formula I have, I usually go for matte if I use a bright color. I'm wondering which liner you would recommend with it? I feel like soar or chicory could work depending on which direction you wanted to go with it.

I'll definitely be picking up hibiscus and i 'might' also be buying mocha from this collection though it's a permanent shade... Thanks for the swatches Christine! :)

I was wondering how Hibiscus compared to Cyndi and Coral Polyp. Thanks! Hibiscus and Bust Out! are so pretty.

hibiscus and mocha are gorgeous!

Hi there! Is naturally eccentric similar to innocent beware? Or is there any dupe you know of for innocence beware?? Thanks!

Oooh, Hibiscus seems like it would be a gorgeous alternative to red for fair skin tones.

I wonder how Hibiscus compares to Guerlain Rouge G Noire Rouge Sensuel. A bit more coral, perhaps?

Really want hibiscus especially since it's close in color to viva glam cyndi (I love that color!)

so Hibiscus' review is here and I totally agree with you it reminded me of viva Glam Cyndi a lot... so I brought it too because I love the Cyndi but not so much its finish!

Question, what's the finish of the Hibiscus lipstick?

Christine, do you apply lipstick from the tube or with a lip brush?

I really like Bust out and Hibiscus. Not sure if I could pull off Naturally Eccentric.

I LOVE Hibiscus, but I know I just wouldn't wear it enough...sigh. I want them to bring back Viva Glam Cyndi, I completely missed out and I want it. Naturally Eccentric is pretty too, but I like Hue better.

I just got Viva Glam Cyndi on ebay, overpriced, but I had to have it! On a side note though, I got the Cyndi lipglass at Nordstrom.com. It's still in stock! I got it in the mail today and it's gorgeous!!!

Hibiscus looks amazing on you!

oh my goodness. i am in love with hibiscus. plus it's a flower i see all the time living here in hawaii. ahhhh!

How does Hibiscus compare to Toxic Tale?

Loving Hibiscus on you. Bust out looks great as well but more easily dupable. I'll most likely get those 2 as well as all the shadows and blush.

Lately the LE packaging is priced $1 more. They did it with VV also.

Would you happen to know a drugstore dupe for Mocha? I checked you Mickey Contractor lipstick post earlier, and Mocha was the only one that didn't have any dupes listed in the individual shade review portion. ._. I'm so far away from a MAC counter and I don't have my own credit card to purchase it online... so if there was a drugstore dupe, I'd be happy. D: If you don't, it's fine, I'll just have to wait until I can take the long trip to the mall. :D I'm just dying to try this on my NC35 skin. *_* Thanks in advance@

Mocha is permanent, so it's available any time you want. I don't have a drugstore dupe for it, sorry!

i wish that we could have seen hibiscus cause thats the one i really wanted to see

Funny, I used to have Mocha but I don't recall it's as bright in the tube as yours is here, Christine. On me, Mocha was the darker version of Kinda Sexy. It doesn't look medium-dark brown, too n it's kinda bright on your lips. I wonder if it was reformulated? Too bad I don't have my Mocha anymore otherwise I'd send you the picture.

wow mocha looks great on you! i dont love these colors for myself, though :(

Hi Christine! I am loving Bust Out! Do you think the shade is quite similar to Magenta lipliner? I've been looking for it in a lipstick form!

another nude stupid pink oh yay

Would the bust out look good on a palest olive(neutral pale flowing to warm but not exactly warm) skin tone? I'm C2 skin tone and have deep brown eyes and hair.I loved the shade but not sure it if would fit.
