MAC Peacocky: Overall Review & Recommendations

OVERALL, I was really impressed by the texture of the Mega Metal Eyeshadows, so much so that I gave them my highest grade.  There is a reason why I don’t give out many A or A+ grades, and I think that it how it should be–these grades should be reserved for extraordinary products and ones that really knock it out of the park.  The texture is smooth, buttery (almost creamy, but it is for sure a powder), and blends like a dream.  Excellent color pay off, and these can be used wet or dry (without leaving any “wet” spots behind).  I have several of these on my must-have list, but please understand that the formula is what makes them must-haves, and so when it comes to colors, it is really more about what colors you want.

I couldn’t think of anything wrong with these, and even though they are more expensive than the smaller MAC eyeshadows, these are over double the size–a tremendous value.  But you must consider value vs. price; just because you get a lot of product doesn’t mean you’ll ever use it all, so then price should be more important than whether you get a truck load or a thimble full!

Of course, personally, I prefer uniformity, and love that I can depot my single eyeshadows and put them into palettes to save space.  These are too big for the eyeshadow palettes but too small for the blush palettes.  You can remove the insert on the MAC palettes, however, or use other brand’s empty palettes. They are similar in size to the Tartan Tale eyeshadows, mineralize eyeshadows, and Cream Colour Bases.

The Kissable Lipcolours are nice–the lighter shades, like Super, seem to fade faster (about three to four hours of wear, but quicker if you eat/drink), while the darker shades, like Scandelicious, last six to eight hours and can make it through eating/drinking.  They’re lightweight, comfortable to wear, and don’t dry out lips at all.  They have MAC’s signature vanilla scent, and nearly all of them are opaque with others being semi-opaque.  I’m just not impressed with their $18 price tag.

Nice-to-Haves: Kissable Lipcolour in Exxxhibitionist, Love Peck, Scandelicious; Mega Metal Eyeshadows in Mating Call, Prance, Sex-pectations, Spectacle of Yourself, Top of the Posh,Tweet Me

Skip: Kissable Lipcolour in Vanity Fair (too streaky)

Check your stash for…

Nothing — everything in this collection is a brand new shade/product, so there are no repromotes of past limited edition or permanent shades.

Skip if you have…

  • Skip DANDIZETTE if you have URBAN DECAY GODDESS; Goddess is just slightly bluer.
  • Skip MATING CALL if you have FASHION GROUPIE; especially if you also have Lotusland, because Mating Call is essentially a cross between the two–it is just a shade lighter than Fashion Groupie.
  • Skip ODALISQUE if you have STRIKE A POSE (limited edition); Strike a Pose is slightly darker and tealer, but it is the closest in color that I found.
  • Skip PEEK-AT-YOU if you have SOFT FORCE (limited edition); Soft Force is slightly darker (not even really a full shade darker), but the two are very similar.
  • Skip SPECTACLE OF YOURSELF if you have ANTIQUED or GLAMOUR CHECK; Antiqued is ever so slightly warmer, Glamour Check ever so slightly redder–these are very, very similar.
  • Skip TWEET ME if you have MELON PIGMENT; Melon pigment just has a stronger, more metallic finish.
  • Skip UNFLAPPABLE if you have SMUT; unless you’re looking for a more complex brown-based shade, as Unflappable has more of a plumminess to it that Smut doesn’t have at all.
  • Skip EXXXHIBITIONIST if you have VIVA GLAM CYNDI LIPGLASS (limited edition) or VEGAS VOLT LIPSTICK; Cyndi is slightly less orange, while Vegas Volt is slightly lighter.
  • Skip LOVE PECK if you have DARK SIDE LIPSTICK; they are very similar in color; Love Peck is a bit darker and obviously glossier.
  • Skip SCANDELICIOUS if you have NARS STRAWBERRY FIELDS or KORRES #54; Strawberry Fields is touch darker and sheerer, while #54 is redder.
  • Skip STRUT YOUR STUFF if you have KORRES #56; #56 is more of a true red.
  • Skip SUPER if you have KORRES #30; #30 is just a little less brown.
  • Skip WOO ME if you have CHERISH LIPSTICK or HUG ME LIPSTICK; Cherish is a little darker, while Hug Me is closer but sheerer.

Recommendations by Skin Tone

Please note that this section is merely suggesting shades that would complement a particular skin tone better than other shades, but these lists are meant to be rather exhaustive of the entire collection; it’s not reflective of must-haves for your skin tone. When it comes to cooler/warmer skin tones, these are products that lean noticeably cool/warm and therefore complement the corresponding skin tone better (but it does not mean you can’t wear a warmer product if you’re cooler!).

  • Light skin tones: Kissable Lipcolours in Enchantee, Flaunting It, Love Peck, Scandelicious, So Vain, Super, Vanity Fair, Woo Me; Mega Metal Eyeshadows in Centre Stage, Dalliance, Dandizette, Noir Plum, Peek-at-You, Prance, Top of the Posh, Unflappable

  • Warm undertones: Kissable Lipcolours in Exxxhibitionist, So Vain, Super, Woo Me; Mega Metal Eyeshadows in Ego, Paparazz-she, Sex-pectations, Spectacle of Yourself, Tweet Me

I think I’m going to get Tweet Me. I really like that!
Thanks for all of the effort you put it in to reviewing, duping, and swatching everything!

  2. Somhrita

Thanks a bunch! super helpful. I think I am getting Temper Tantra, Flaunting it and maybe Dalliance and Unflappable.

  3. Megan

So glad you have Center Stage and Unflappable on your Must-Haves list…I always feel better about getting a product, if it’s a must have for you! LOL thanks Christine

  4. Bernice

Thanks Christine! I love your honesty and recommendation.

  5. Carrie

I keep changing my mind about what to get!

Question though: do you think Odalisque is too much for pale skin? (I’m NW15)

  6. laura

I’m going to buy flaunting it and mating call… I’m also in love with paparazz-she but I have just bought follow your fancy (I know it’s very different… but still orange!)

  7. Adele

This is the first time I’ve been excited about a MAC launch for a long time… I absolutely love Dalliance, and if Prance isn’t too pink, I want that one as well. Unflappable looks so lovely swatched, but Smut just looked dirty on me, so I’ll probably skip it.

Interestingly, the texture of these shadows reminds me of that Chanel spring quint – the metallic creamy powder formula.

    • kasia

I’m also tempted by Uflappable, but Smut turned out to make me look so old and sad, that I’m still thinking about it.

  8. Heli

I might have to re-think my shopping list and give those eyeshadows a chance. Maybe just get a few and hope Mac will make the rest perm.

Still not sure if I should just get OCC Lip tars and skip the kissables even though there’re several shades I really like.

  9. Emerald

Last night I went through all your posts on this collection limiting myself on what to buy, I’ve come to the conclusion to get scandelicious, temper tantra, and love peck for the lips and the mega eye shadows in unflappable, paparazz-she, and sex-pectations. I’m super excited to get this collection, pricing is kinda steep so I can’t really splurge on any more.

  10. Ali

Thank you so much for everything you do Christine! This collection is beautiful I would buy everything if I could, but your swatches allow me to indulge for a bit :)

  11. Deb

Thanks so much for the recommendations! I am thinking Flaunting It and Prance, but this really does seem like one of the best MAC collections in a long time. Thanks for doing such in-depth reviews of all the products!

  12. monika

Is Odalesque similar to Stila’s Mystic? Thanks

  13. bxboricua

Really want Dalliance, Unflappable and Odalisque :)

  14. i am confused by undertones. nw 430my veins look green! i thought i was warm but on the foundation matrix it’s listed under cool. All the colors I want are good for cool tones!!! LOL. I wonder if this is why i haven’t found my “staple” look yet :) thanks for a great post!

  15. Amrita

You mentioned you’re not impressed with their $18 price tag… Today I went to the PRO store, and here in BC, Canada, it was $24 with tax! D:

  16. Suzy

If you removed the tray from the MAC pallets, do you think you could fit them all into one if you depotted?

Also, do you think that the really soft and creamy texture might make these particularly fragile for depotting, or would you recommend not taking the risk?

  17. Thank you for these recommendations, Christine! so far, i have 9 shadows on my shopping list but now I have narrowed them to 7, since I have Melon pigment and UD Goddess. :)

  18. Germa Brokschmidt

Thanks, this review is verry helpful! It’s nice to know that some of the lipcollors last longer than others. I will keep this in mind when I go to the counter. I am definitely going for some darker shades! I’m looking forward to have some Mega Metal eyeshadows. The price isn’t an issue for me, because you get much more product than regular eyeshadows.

  19. Federica

I need Noir Plum !!XD it will be my birthday present from myself =) Thanks for the review!!!

  20. Awww lovely…..!!!

  21. I just pre-ordered at my MAC Counter. These Mega Metal shadows are even more amazing in person! I’m getting: Centre Stage, Dalliance, Dandizette, Ego, Mating Call, Noir Plum, Odalisque, Prance, Unflappable. To justifying purchasing so many eyeshadows I’m skipping the Lipcolours. Plus I skipped all the MAC Collections for the past few months… so I deserve a treat 😀

  22. Krystal

I played with these for a min at nordies and the shadows are so creamy! I just really dislike the size, I’m getting one (tweet me) but I know if I get anymore I will never use them since they wont fit in a palette. So vain is on my list for the lip colors!

  23. Rebekah

i ordered one of every mega metal shadow…i’m slightly addicted…lol and am currently deciding which kissable lipcolors to get. I def know I want So Vain and Scandelicious though. and thanks for such awesome reviews! i can’t even imagine the time and effort you have to put in to stay on top of everything. we <3 you!!!!!

  24. Stef

Ahh, I love this blog! Thank you so much for your posts and beautiful photos. I was going to skip all the eyeshadows until I saw your photos of Dalliance. I think it’s the light-gold inner eye color I’ve been looking for my entire life

  25. Valerie

is mating call similar to beautiful iris?

  26. Nazlee

You seriously are AMAZING for doing these swatch/comparison/dupe blogs. Thanks so much for taking time to do this! It REALLY helps me out on deciding what to buy. :)

  28. I can tell you are from America (This isn’t having a go at Americans or anything, I wish I lived in the states) because you got the collection earlier then Australia and the price is half of what we’d have to spend on! I was disapointed to see you say ‘I’m just not impressed with their $18 price tag.’ because I would gladly pay that for a MAC lipgloss as in Australia we will have to pay about $36-$42 for that. So you guys are lucky. Another example our lipsticks are $35!! Trying to empty out as many 6 packages as I can to get my free lippy.

  29. laura

here in Italy the collection will arrive next month :( I’ll buy flaunting it, mating call and paparazz-she …. probably some other eye shadows because I won’t spend money for wonder woman… I like noir plum and unflappable (they’d be a cute mix)

  30. divinem (Melissa)

Well hell, I wound up with 13 of the 15. Only 2 I skipped were Ego & Mating Call because I’m just not a fan of the colors. After receiving the first six I ordered, I couldn’t pass up the others. Too special and will last a loooong time!

I’ve always loved the strong payoff of UD shadows but hate the fallout. This collection answers that unmet need for me.

Thanks for pulling all this together, Christine!

  31. Lola

My SA at MAC told me that it wasn’t possible to depot these eyeshadows because they are too soft. I think they will crumble if I tried to depot them

  32. Jodie

are any of these a dupe or even similar to Grand Entrance? xx

  33. Nunuiviet

I think I will get dalliance, top of the posh, prance, matting call, Ego and odalisque, I’ll pass on the lkissabable lipcolour coz I ‘m not a big fan of lip glass stuff, rarely buy those…
