MAC Peacocky: Mega Metal Eyeshadows Review, Photos, Swatches, Part 2

MAC Mega Metal Eyeshadow ($19.50 for 0.11 oz.) are a new long-wearing metallic powder with an intense metallic finish with medium-buildable coverage that is not supposed to fade or crease. This post features these five shades: Noir Plum (true purple with silver pearl), Odalisque (deep teal), Paparazz-she (deep copper bronze), Peek-at-You (frosted yellow white), and Prance (frosted mauve pearl).

  • Noir Plum is a purple violet with subtle silver micro-shimmer and a faint metallic sheen. This seemed to have the weakest metallic finish. It seems like a darker version of Violet pigment or lighter version of Grape pigment. It is a cooler-toned, more vibrant version of Marvel (Mickey Contractor, ’11).
  • Odalisque It seems bluer than Shimmermoss (permanent) but more comparable to Talent Pool (Starflash ’08).
  • Paparazz-she is vibrant, coppered orange with a metallic sheen. This shade was ridiculously pigmented–the most intense of the bunch. It’s like a richer version of Amber Lights (permanent).
  • Peek-at-You is a pale, white gold with a metallic sheen. This was the lightest and sheerest shade of the fifteen. It seemed similar to Dazzlelight (permanent).  It’s lighter than Dreammaker (Starflash, ’08).
  • Prance is a cool-toned mauve-tinged pink-silver with a metallic sheen. It’s like a lighter, less purple version of Shale (permanent). It seems like a mauve version of Grand Entrance (Starflash ’08)–I wouldn’t say they’re dupes, but it had the same feel.

Buttery, smooth as silk, blendable beyond belief, and richly pigmented, the new Mega Metal Eyeshadows are easily one of the best new products I’ve seen MAC put out in the past year (if not longer). The best part about these is the consistency across the fifteen–they all have the same creamy, silky texture and solid pigmentation across the board. Though the color range is not necessarily the most unique, the formula is fantastic, which makes the quality top notch. I wouldn’t necessarily run out and buy duplicate shades, but every shade is worth checking out. I feel like it’s been too long since I’ve said that about a MAC product.

These are over double the size of regular MAC eyeshadows ($14.50 for 0.05 oz.) and are the same size as Cream Colour Bases (in shape/packaging), and the texture is richer, almost thicker in a way, than veluxe pearl finish shadows. They have some of the intensity and the pearly finish of Starflash shadows, but they stand out on their own, too.

P.S. — I have also used these wet (“foiled”) and have not noticed any wet spot left behind, but it’s only been a few hours–so I’ll get back to you on that!

MAC Peacocky launches on January 6th, 2011 in-stores across North America, January 2011 for international. The approximate launch date for online is January 4th but may not be exact. It features 15 Mega Metal Eyeshadows ($19.50 each) and 12 Kissable Lipcolours ($18.00 each). All products are limited edition.

  • Product: 30/30
  • Value: 10/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

FINAL THOUGHTS: Slightly subdued, these shades are as wearable for color-fiends and more neutral fans. There are shades that are sure to appeal to everyone, but the power of these lies in the quality–smooth, buttery textures combined with intense pigmentation, effortless to blend, and cohesive application.

  1. Victoria says:

What warrants the higher price? Is there more product and/or are the pans a different size?

  2. Sarah says:

Oh my Odalisque! I KNEW that one was going to be gorgeous! :)

  3. Marcela says:

all these colors are gorgeous and their textures sound amazing… unfortunately i don’t see any need to add them to my 49 eyeshadow collection… if they were the typical size i would maybe buy a few a depot.

  4. Jordyn says:

Wouldn’t Odalisque be a good shadow match to set the Siahi fluidline?

  5. lissa says:

noir plum and prance are gorgeous

  6. krissy says:

These look amazing! I hope they will come to Norway! I just want to wish you a Happy New Year as well!! :D

  7. Monica says:

Have you compared Odalisque with Cool Heat? are the shades similar? i am assuming already the texture is like night and day, but Cool Heat is my favorite LE shade for eyes and would like something less chalky.

    • Christine says:

      Hi Monica,

I will be doing a separate post with comparisons and dupes once I have finished doing reviews and have a chance to go through my stash. Right now, I am focused on getting up photos, swatches, and reviews for these new products. Thanks for your patience!

  8. Nora says:

I’ve been needing an orange es for a while…. I think I’ve found it.

  9. Laurence says:

Noir Plum and Odalisque are superb colors, gorgeous….

  10. Vonvon says:

All these 5 shades are beautiful!

Odalisque and Paparazz-she!!! Awesome! so pigmented!

The 2 lighter shades are very pretty too….as highlight under the brow and inner corner of the eyes. Even as a wash of lid color would look gorgeous, IMO!

  11. Germa Brokschmidt says:

At part 1 I asked if the pans where bigger than the normal shadows. But If got my anwser already. I must overlooked it. I Love Noir Plum, Odalisque, Paparazz-she! And its great that its the dubble size of the normal shadows, because that means that you pay less for the amount you get.

  12. Dawn says:

I would be interested to see how Paparazz-she compares with Saffron

  13. Jazmine says:

Noir plum and Odalisque are gorgeous but I don’t think I can justify spending $40 for just 2 eyeshadows…

  14. Elle says:

I love these colors, but I have to say I’m sad to see the higher price tag on these. I would rather have smaller eye shadows for a lower price. It takes me a long time to ever hit pan anyway…thanks for all the info Christine :)

  15. Leliforever says:

Do you think these could be used as highlighters or as blushes (I mean not all of them but some…). ?

  16. Noga says:

Man, this colletion is going to bleed me dry. So getting Odalisque, to start with…

  17. Heather says:

    Paparazz-she….. WOW!

  18. Adail says:

How does prance compare to urban decay’s sidecar and sin?

  19. Bahar says:

Oh dear I cant believe this.. Is this really the purple I have been waiting so long for? I really love the color of Violet pigment but hate working with loose eyeshadow so I have been waiting for MAC to release a similar eyeshadow. But everytime there is a LE purple eyeshadow I like it has horrible payoff.. So why even buy them.

Im so happy to see these shadows ESPECIALLY Noir Plum which meens my search for my purple eyeshadow is over :) Probably gonna get Centre Stage too because I looove Chocolate pigment :)

  20. Leslie says:

When I look at some of these, I think back to my UD NYC palette. Im only crazy about the orange coppery shade.

  21. Megan says:

Gosh Paparazz-she is so pretty, but I know I woudn’t get much use out of it :(

  22. Rayanna says:

Do you Think Prance would make a good highlighter for someone with NW15 skintone?

  23. Laia says:

WOW at Noir Plum and Odalisque. YES PLEASE!!!

  24. egon says:

might get Peek-at-You, Prance and Odalisque

Thanks Christine for the swatches =)

I <3 noir plum and odalisque! So gorgeous.

  34. Ashley says:

  35. Ellen K. says:

Noir Plum looks pretty similar to UD’s Ransom. Hmmmm

May just pass up on this collection, not sure

  36. Marcela says:

wow these colors are amazing! texture sounds wonderful too. but i can’t justify buying any of these as i have 3.5 pro palettes. i wish these came in refill pans!!!! =(

  37. Mariella says:

Christine, you’re probably sick of answering questions like this but is Odalisque at all like either Haight or Money from BOS III??? I put some on my hand at the store to compare when I got home but it had pretty much worn off by then (winter time here and wearing gloves on my errands had rubbed it away). I got Centre Stage and Ego but I’m hoping not to “need” Odalisque, gorgeous as it is, because I’ll never get anywhere near finishing it and I’ve got BOS III.

  38. nur says:

Do you think peek at you can make a good eyeshadow highlight that goes with any colour?

  39. justine says:

ohmygoodness.. i feel like i need prance, dalliance and unflappable, but i know i can only get one D:
    what to do.. cannot decide…

  40. ilona says:

    hi christine!
how would you compare prance to last year’s hypnotizing from love lace?
    thanks!

  42. Crystal C. says:

Hi Christine, I know this is kind of late for this release by Mac but I got a slight problem with this line. I’ve been loving them for the first few weeks I was using it, then afterwards, it began stinging and it was just too much I had to remove them. I don’t know what happened. And I feel so bad since I bought a lot of them. :( I just tried them again 2 times this week, same thing happened. Have you had this experience with these eyeshadows?
