YSL Fuchsia Desinvolte (01) Baby Doll Kiss and Blush Review, Photos, Swatches

YSL Fuchsia Desinvolte (01) Baby Doll Kiss and Blush

Earlier this month, YSL offered an early debut of two shades of the YSL Baby Doll Kiss and Blush ($40.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) range, and I bought both shades that were available. They’ve since released twelve shades, though they say online exclusive at the moment. The official release date is later on in April.  I’ll be reviewing both shades I bought, and this is the first one up!

YSL Fuchsia Desinvolte (01) Baby Doll Kiss and Blush ($40.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium fuchsia with cool, blue undertones. Milani Love Potion (07) (LE, $7.99) is a powder, lighter. Clinique Berry Pop (03) (P, $21.00) is a powder, slightly warmer. NARS Coeur Battant (LE, $29.00) is a powder, brighter. Tom Ford Beauty Narcissist (LE, $55.00) is a powder, more shimmery. See comparison swatches. (Here are some possible dupes for this shade as a lip color.

The new formula is supposed to work on cheeks and lips, and the texture is described as an “air whipped mousse” and has a “soft matte finish.”  The color is supposed to be buildable.  Now, I’m often unimpressed by two-in-one products, because it usually doesn’t excel in both areas, just one (or worst case scenario, neither), but YSL has something special here. It’s packaged in a square, glass bottle with a long, cylindrical cap, so it looks nail polish-esque, but when you twist and open, it is a little reminiscent of the Glossy Stains.  The applicator is tapered and spongy with a fair amount of give without being floppy.

The texture was very, very different from Glossy Stains as it never turns thick. Instead, the consistency is thin and felt like a cross between velvet and gel, and it turns into a creamy powder as it blends with the skin and dries to a satin-matte finish. On lips, it stayed rather glossy before eventually wearing down, but I waited before shooting the lip swatch photos, expecting it to dry fairly matte, yet it didn’t.  I felt like I had a workable amount of time to apply and blend the color as a blush, and once it’s on, it stayed on for nine hours. It was easy to pat and blend on the skin, whether bare or over foundation, and though it’s quite pigmented and a little goes a long way, it was very forgiving.

This shade seemed to stain my cheeks slightly, as there was some pinkness even after I removed the color, and it did the same on lips (but a little more staining). When I wore it as a lip color, it lasted well for six and a half hours. More surprising was that my lips weren’t dried out–I wouldn’t describe this as hydrating really, but it kept my lips feeling about the same over time. It does have a sweet, mango and grape scent (reminds me of Glossy Stains), though it seemed subtler than some of their other lipstick formulas (like Rouge Volupte).

WOW. I always love the idea of two-uses-in-one products, but it’s really hard to find a formula that excels at both. This product looks to be something really, really special, and I much prefer the range of shades here than the really warm-toned Nars Matte Multiples. I’m just going to go ahead and add this to my ‘to-buy’ list.

This looks very interesting. Is this an LE product? Are there other shades? Do you know who would be carrying this in Toronto (Canada)? So many questions…i know.

Christine, this looks fab on you! I was prepared to dislike this product – I never like two in one products on lips. This looks so fresh and pretty on you!

40 dollars? *jaw drops* Haha, I’ll be even more afraid of finishing this than I am of finishing my Glossy Stain, which I’ve finally come to terms with and started using! Even though the price of a lipstick plus blush is actually greater, this just feels more expensive, maybe because it’s forty at once. Do you think the product amount is fair, or is it less for a combined product?

My God Christine, you look so so gorgeous..I can’t even describe how beautiful. . This lip color odd made for you. Bought this.

Maya Avatar

that looks so pretty on you Christine! <3 I can't for them to be officially released so I can test them on in person!
oh just a question, what eyeliner are you using because it's gorgeous 😀

Hi Maya!

It’s Sephora Snakeskin Dress! Just a heads up, I try to list what products I’m wearing under “The Makeup Look,” which will show up after the last photo in the post!

Looks very cool! YSL is coming out with so many interesting formulae – first the Glossy Stains, now this! I love my Glossy Stains, so I might check this product out!

I love this too! Like you, I bought the two shades but after one look at the orange will return it! Too much! But, also like you, I find most cheek/lip products are great for cheek but horrible on lips. So, since I like cream blushes I view them as such. You are so right! This works amazing on both cheeks and lips! It’s so pretty! And I’m not always thrilled with Fuchsia. And as a big matte fan I’m always happy to add something that leans in that direction. Mine never dried on my lips either but stayed creamy (different from the glossy stains).
Can’t wait to see the orange review..as I haven’t returned it yet!

meganlisa Avatar

I haven’t opened it. Just saw your review on the orange and will likely keep it (return postage costs more than I expected!). It looks less orange and a softer color then I expected. Thanks!

This color is so pretty on your cheeks – I’m not sure I would love it on my lips – but it’s the perfect natural flush. How does the finish on the cheeks compare to the Chanel cream blushes?

Melissa C Avatar

Oooh – that’s very intriguing as I haven’t invested in a Chanel creme blush. I like the idea of two in one. Now to find a color I like on both lips and cheeks enough for the price.

Thanks for the review, this really is beautiful! I really want to buy off the YSL website right NOW haha but yours is the only good swatch I can find online! What is the other shade that you got?

Kate Avatar

Well, having been well and truly converted to their glossy stains, I think I’m going to get drawn in by these as well. This looks just stunning. I can’t get over how beautiful and how different the texture looks on your cheeks and lips. Beautiful colour on you, by the way!

I’m going to join in and say I LOVE THIS!!! I even love the shade, though I can struggle to wear cooler toned colours with my summer skintone – I really want the Australian summer to END and the cooler weather to hurry up!! Want me to send some sun your way?!

Christine Avatar

What are ya doing to me Christine? :p I love my glossy stain and I picked up the Spring Meteorites pearls because I needed them in my life and on my face 😉 Now…I need this!!! I love that it does stain the lips…throw on some lip balm when it wears off and I’ll be good to go in a rush. Love the color 🙂

kellly Avatar

oh, wow! I LOVE LOVE LOVE stains. I don’t really love the price of this but I may just have to bite the bullet and get myself at least one. I like the YSL lip stain/gloss I got a while back and this seems like it’s even a step up from that. It looks awesome. I’ll have to see the full color selection … of course I can rationalize the cost – it will be a birthday present to myself! (ha ha)
thanks for the review and photos and the heads up to watch for this stuff to be at Sephora pretty soon!

Denise Avatar

Aww poo! Why couldn’t you have given this a bad review? Why does the colour have to look so pretty?? Now I’m going to have to add yet another thing to my ever growing list of must haves…..
Dangflabbit!

Hi Christine, I recently purchased the Kiss and Blush in #8 and #4 and love them, and am so tempted to purchase more! I thought the fuschia color would look scary but I’m interested in this color after having seen it on you! (It looks beautiful on you.) Thanks so much for your detailed reviews on these, seeing your review influenced me to purchase the two shades I own :). Have a great weekend!

Carolyn Avatar

Update: I ended up purchasing this last night and I love it! It’s such a beautiful pop of color, perfect for spring/summer!
