Ditto! I think of all the winters I have gone through not knowing how critical a step this is. Not only for my face, but also for my hands …and feet! I was using Urea cream on my feet all the time because I could not keep my heels from cracking even with routine care.

Dropping a lot of unnecessary steps — no more brow stuff, no highlighter, no bronzer, no contouring. Getting back to basics makes my routine simpler and faster.

I’ve been working my way through skincare that’s been hidden away in my closet – stuff that I’ve gotten in boxes, stuff I picked up on a whim. Lately I’ve started using The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% and I think it’s showing great results on my skin in clarity and brightness and smoothness. (Not a technique, actually, I guess.)

Do you find that it makes your skin tingle at all? I was using it but had to stop because it was uncomfy. My skin’s better now than it was so I’m going to try again as I’ve heard good things about niacinamide and want to get some of those benefits.

When I remember to do so, applying my highlighter *before* my blush for a much better blend of the two. No weird shiny stripe, and it looks less harsh.

As my skin was moistly combination oily in my 20s, I avoided thick moisturizers and oils with a passion. Nowadays, finishing my night skincare routine with either a good occlusive moisturizer or an oil blend (squalane being a favorite) is what makes my skin look better in the morning and my makeup apply better (haven’t had flaky patches in a long while).

But technique wise, I previously used to apply my foundation and powder all over the face, including eyelids, even if I used a primer. But I started following Robert Welsh’s advice of only using eye primer on the naked lid (skincare and SPF off course before) and it really improved the look and longevity of eye makeup. Not that’s needed too much these days. 😅

Quite a few changes to my beauty/skincare routine have made all the difference:
1. Using a facial oil after my shower has left my mature aged skin better
2. Using a dedicated moisturiser and sunscreen with SPF 50 makes my morning routine easier and better
3. Applying my setting powder after using my blush keeps my blush on for more of the day.

Waiting to add my concealer after my foundation. I don’t know why I used to do the reverse before, perhaps because my circles are so dark and I felt I needed two layers. Also, I recently found the BEST little cheap concealer that works for me (even as a more mature women), Dark Blonde (that’s the name of the brand from Denmark) in n°3. I mean I can’t believe a $1.50 concealer is better than (in order of former preference) Benefit Boing, L’Oreal Age Perfect, Estée Lauder Double Wear, NARS Radiant, etc., I’ve tried so many, but it is.

Using a face oil as part of my skincare. I’ve been dealing with a painful dryness that I couldn’t get rid of. Advice I’ve seen says to use an oil after the last water based skincare ingredient so that it ‘seals’ everything in and I had a bottle of Tarte’s maracuja oil lying around that I hadn’t really been using so I thought I’d try that. Game. Changer.
