What brushes do you travel with?
What brushes do you travel with? Have you found any great brush sets? Share!
I haven’t found a true travel set that I like enough, so I take my full-sized brushes. Depending on which ones I take, I actually have put them in the hotel safe with my laptop and whatnot, LOL! (And I always hang a do not disturb sign already!) I usually take two or three MAC 239s, MAC 242, Chikuhodo Z Highlight and Blush brushes, Real Techniques Expert Face brush, MUFE #128, a couple of crease brushes, an angled brow brush, and a mascara spoolie brush.
Thanks to Nicole for today’s question! Do you have a question idea? Submit yours here.
E.L.F. Face Brush, my mini eye brush set from EcoTools and my Beauty Blender. I pack light 🙂
Usually a few real techniques brushes. Wouldn’t travel with my chikuhodo brushes
I have a retractable kabuki face brush and a mini kit with a cheek and two eye brushes.
They’re all from Sephora Collection. None of them are great, but they’re decent.
Thanks for mentioning that bit about the hotel safe and putting brushes in it. I would have never thought of it but it would certainly suck to have to replace brushes. I also hang “do not disturb” on my doors when I travel–i can certainly live with my mess.
Oh goodness! I travel all the time (I’m flying out again the end of next week!) and I don’t hang the do not disturb sign when I’m not in the room. I know 60 Minutes would have you believe all maids are thieves who will just smear toilet dirt and germs all over the room. But in my experience they’re some of the kindest, hardest working people you’ll ever meet and they take pride in their work. I leave my stuff (iPads, makeup, designer handbags, etc.) laying around hotel rooms all the time and nothing has ever been stolen. I’d be shocked if it ever was.
As for my brushes I just take a scaled down set. There’s no real need to go to travel sizes if you don’t want to, just take fewer to conserve on space. I prefer a brush with a shortish handle to begin with so that helps. But Sephora has some great eyes ones with shorter handles. It’s their “classics” collection I think. I take two eye brushes, one Sonia Kashuk blush brush, and a retractable Sephora powder brush. I put those plastic mesh brush guards over them to keep them safe and cleanish en route and this has worked well for me for countless years.
My mother is the same way (as you) when she travels but I personally do hang the ‘do not disturb’ sign. Hotel staff is typically wonderful whenever I interact with them but they’re also only human. Doing this not only protects me, but protects them in case anything does go missing (whether or not I just misplaced it–which is more than likely) and saves them a bit of work. Plus, they might be proud of their work but I typically don’t like pillows or sheets arranged by others after I’ve done so to my own liking.
I once had a coworker ages ago who got fired for stealing yet we and my old boss still talk and catch up with her whenever she stops by. She is still a sweet person who is trying her best. Just got waylaid a bit from one incident.
I always bring my 3 retractable brushes on my purse (Hakuhodo J602 for face, Chikuhodo H-6 for cheek & a lip brush from Koyudo set), but I’ll also bring these for traveling:
– Alcone Non-Latex Sponge (disposable for even lighter travel!)
– Chanel Retractable Kabuki Brush (I love its buffing power for powder foundation)
– M·A·C 239
– Hakuhodo J5523
– Hakuhodo G5520
– Bdellium Tools 760 Liner (it’s cheap, I won’t cry a river if I ever lose it)
– Wayne Goss Holiday Brush (so versatile, it’s the “One Brush to Rule Them All”–kinda brush!)
Cheap brushes so they don’t get lost or stolen. My fingers. Not bringing my Suqqu or a Surratt.
I don’t ever bought a set of travel brushes.they’re often then not come out too small or not soft as full size.I love Louise Young LY34(big foundation brush),LY07(big powder brush),LY20(fan brush),MAC 239,MAC 217,Real Techniques Blush brush
I only travel with two — any more than that and I end up taking everything with me! Haha.
I take the Anastasia Beverly Hills Duo Angle/Spooley Brush because brows are such an important part of my routine and the e.l.f. Studio Powder Brush because the firmness is ok for everything: contouring, blending, and adding highlighter and blush. Everything else — lips and eyes and such — I think I can decently apply with my fingers.
I just got back from a 10-week trip, and I brought my full-size brushes along with a couple travel-sized ones. I ended up using my multitasking eyeshadow brush and a travel-sized powder brush all the time, and using the rest literally a couple of times.
Then again, I’m a chronic overpacker.
I take my Bdellium travel kit. I really love them, they’re perfect for me.
Usually I travel with 10 brushes or so. Mostly eye brushes and a couple of powder brushes.
Now that Sonia Kashuk’s brushes are all on sale for around $5 or less (Target Canada is closing), I’m seriously considering going and buying one of each of her brushes that I use and keeping them packed for travel. Right now, the ones I took with me (for almost 3 weeks away) were Shiseido’s foundation brush, 2 RT eyeshadow brushes, 2 SK flat shadow brushes (not sure if they’re small or medium as they’re the old white ones with no numbers), an SK crease brush, Sephora’s Smudge Brush #70, a Quo retractable lipstick brush, my cheap old PUR Minerals blush and powder brushes and a double ended IT Cosmetics brush. Oh, and a Sephora cream eyeshadow brush (the handle of which I’ve shortened and which is the BEST concealer brush EVER for me). Hell of a lot of brushes….I wish I could manage with less and maybe could have ditched the IT and PUR brushes and used the Shiseido one for everything (apparently, it is multi-purpose but if it’s still moist from applying my BB cream, it’d make a mess of my blush and powder….). Oh for my 20’s, when I could travel with practically nothing….
I have a few non-branded brushes I bought in a pharmacy at Korea which are actually the softest I have ever tried!! I bring them along whenever I travel they are short handled and very easy to wash.
I always travel with five brushes-
My Quo buffing and stippling brushes for my face products, and for my eyes- MAC 239 for blending, Color Institute C brush for patting on shadow, and i on beauty pencil brush for my crease!
I got this AMAZING brush set at Sephora for $20 that has a blush/powder brush, the best shadow brushes (crease and fluffy lid), a smudge brush, and a liner/brow brush. I throw in maybe two more tiny detailer brushes for concealer, etc. and a spooly. I’m so sad its no longer available, but I saw a similar travel set from Chanel (SCORE!) xx
I have the exact same travel set from Sephora, & while it’s amazingly convenient to have those 5 brushes in that black, slightly-bigger-than-palm-sized, fold-over magnetic case, I feel like they’re too rough & scratchy for my eyes…& they shed something horrible. The liner brush & the domed crease brushes in particular are the ones that reeeelly hurt (I still use them tho!!! Lol)..
& omg, I also am fanatical about my hotel rooms! Espec places like Atlantic City, or places that see your makeup bags (I’m a chronic overpacker unless Im flying).. That “Do Not Disturb” sign is ALWAYS up, I tidy up the room myself, get towels & linens myself, & ALWAYS TIP THE MAID 😉
Bahaha I laughed out when i read this because I do the same thing with my makeup bag and my brushes when Im travelling.. I stuff them into the safe. I feel so ridiculous doing it but I still do it anyway ( in addition to the do not disturb sign as well : )) ) Glad to know there are more of us out there!! that aside, the only travel friendly brush that I actually like is a 2 sided eye brush from coastal scents bought ages ago and a powder brush from the balm – i still take full sized ones too anyway.
My Armani brushes because I have the pro brush roll from them.
I travel constantly and have recently bought the Trish McEvoy brush set, not quite travel size but smaller than some. It is a compact hard case lined with washable plastic, comes with five brushes and fits several others. I usually take the Wayne Goss Noº13, MAC 138, Marc Jacob´s concealer brush, and a Beauty Blender, of course!
I just pack my everyday brushes, choosing whatever I need for the makeup I’m taking. I try not to pack brushes that are too expensive, in case of loss or theft.
I have a little bhcosmetics Double-Ended Travel Brush Set that I keep in my purse all the time. They’re decent and have a good variety. I added my favorite no-name little crease brush, and an inexpensive eyebrow brush/eyelash comb. The set works for emergencies and day or weekend trips.
I rarely travel, but if I do I pack all my full-sized brushes.
Not my good brushes thats for sure, I’ve had too many things disappear in hotels…even 4 star hotels..
I have a collection of E.L.F. brushes just for my travel bag.
I haven’t found a travel set I like, so I just take my regular brushes. I let the nature of the trip dictate what I take. Our next trip is a long weekend in Arizona, but because it’s all about baseball and I don’t wear makeup to games, I’m taking minimal makeup and only a couple bushes–maybe two eye brushes, a powder brush and a blush brush. For a longer trip or one where I’m likely to wear makeup everyday, I’ll take a few more brushes–a couple more eye look brushes, a foundation brush and a concealer brush.
I clean my brushes pretty much after each use, so I just grab them off the tray (or the cup if I just spot-cleaned) and toss them in a small, mesh pouch that snaps into my makeup bag. These all tend to be the brushes I reach for most often, but if I need specific brushes, I’ll go through and grab those, as well. My makeup bag is a double-sided case that folds, so I can fill my pouch with brushes, and they don’t take up any extra space.
I am the worst over packer..so bad! I usually pack a couple times because I pack and then weigh and have to repack,lol..I hate flying for that reason!
For brushes, I too take my regular brushes. But, I try to take my least better ones and put them in brush gaurds or wrap them in tissue or towels if the brush roll doesn’t work. My brushes are like my babies. Same with my makeup. I literally pack that stuff so secure, you would think it was fine pears! I have no fine jewelry! lol!
The safe and “Do not disturb’ sign is an awesome idea..I will be doing that from now on! Thanks for the tip!
I generally take a full sized brush for my setting powder, an angled blush brush and several eyeshadow brushes – including a fluffy brush for blending.
It depends, of course, on where I am traveling to and how long I will be gone. When I go to visit my daughter in D.C., I am comfortable enough to take some of my good brushes in my carry on. When I must stay in a hotel or motel, I take a some of my more budget brushes and I lock them in my suitcase when I am not in the room. I always carry with me a lock that is not TSA approved to use in the hotel room in case the TSA locks can be opened by someone who has the appropriate key. I never take brushes in checked luggage. N
I am actually travelling (for ten days) and for the first time I am happy with my selecton of make up and brushes. I Need Tools for professional and private occasions, so I decided for a medium Equipment. I took a handy brush role and chose my second best brushes for foundation, powder, concealer, eyeshadow (3) and liner. And I brought another real techniques stippling brush for replacing the foundation brush, as will not wash my brushes on the go. If I use TM, which will be the case during the days, I will use my Hands, even though I do not like that so much. The only brush which is expensive and would be really a Desaster if I would lose it, is my Sensai Blush brush. It is the best brush for my sensitive pale Skin and I feel unable to place Blush with something else that good…
Depends where I’m going/why and for how long. If it’s only one night, then I’ll often take just an RT setting brush to use with powder, and only pack cream products otherwise, which I’ll apply with my fingers (BB cream, concealer, Color Tattoo or Caviar Stick type eyeshadow, cream blush or all-in-one type face colour stick, Becca Spotlight liquid highlighter). If I really want to use powder eyeshadows, I’ll bring the three-pack of Too Faced eye brushes that came in a pink cylindrical case, as those are good brushes and they travel beautifully.
For longer trips, I splurged on the Bobbi Brown set last Christmas, in the brown croc case. Those are great. There’s also room for more brushes in it, so I can also include my MAC and Illamasqua travel size brushes. I actually have a lot of travel sizes that I use all the time at home, because I much prefer the handles. I am very near-sighted so I need to get really close to the mirror in order to effectively do my makeup, and a lot of standard brushes have such long handles that they bang against the glass, lol.
At the moment I’m traveling with BH cosmetics signature brush set. It contains all the brushes I use and they’re pretty colours (white and gold). Before I got the brush set I travelled with mac 239, 217, 210, 263, 219 and real techniques powder brush, blush brush, expert face brush and setting brush.
Mac 239, Mac 217, Mac 225, Mac 252, Mac 219, Elf Powder Brush (for liquid foundation), Jane Iredale the Handi for powder, a contour brush, an angled eye brush, a spoolie, and a blush brush 🙂 These are all my everyday brushes so I just toss them in a roll and bring them when I travel.
