Urban Decay Ten 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Set

Urban Decay Ten 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Set ($52.00 for 0.31 oz.) includes ten (obviously!) eyeliners–one full-sized Perversion and then nine travel-sized (0.03 oz. vs. 0.04 oz., so it’s 25% smaller than full-sized) shades. Though nine of the shades are new and exclusive to this limited edition set, a few of them feel like, “Haven’t I seen you before?” There is definitely some overlap with past shades released in the 24/7 line-up. Though I am a fan of the 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil formula, and I love how wide the shade range is, there are too many under-performers in this set. I’m disappointed, and I wish Urban Decay would increase the pigmentation behind their more sparkly shades, as they consistently apply much sheerer and more unevenly than their less shimmery/sparkly shades.

The price point on the set might seem high (it did to me initially), given that Urban Decay has released Ocho Loco and Ocho Loco 2 over the past two years around the holidays, and each had eight, full-sized eyeliners for $59 (0.32 oz.) while here, nine of the eyeliners aren’t full-sized, but if you actually look at the amount, it’s only 0.01 oz. less and you’re paying $7 less as well. The eyeliners were $184/oz. in Ocho Loco, and they are $168/oz. in Ten.

Stargazer is described as a “soft metallic gold with dimensional sparkle.” It’s a muted, yellow gold with darker gold sparkle and a metallic finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage, and it didn’t build to opaque color as it didn’t seem to layer well. I found it needed to be smudged into place with a brush to look more even on the lash line. It lasted for eight hours on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Mugshot is described as a “light metallic taupe with slight pink shift.” It’s a medium-dark, warm-toned taupe brown with a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation in a single stroke with a smooth, creamy consistency that glided on easily. It wore well for nine hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Glitter Rock is described as a “metallic pink with pink multidimensional sparkle.” It’s a muted, pinky-brown with warm undertones and pink sparkle. It was sheer when applied in one go, and it just wouldn’t build up much more than semi-sheer, and it tended to apply unevenly, despite the pencil gliding on. What color applied lasted for eight hours before gradually fading. Unfortunately, I don’t have any great dupes for this, only one other shade I could think of had a similar tone/coloring but was much darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Faint is described as a “warm taupe matte.” It’s a medium-dark, subtly warm-toned brown with a hint of gray and a matte finish. It had decent color payoff in a single stroke, which was buildable to mostly opaque color after two layers. It wore well for eight and a half hours and was lightly creamy in texture. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Moonspoon is described as a “metallic gray with silver sparkle.” It’s a blackened gray with lighter silver sparkle. It had sheer pigmentation one pass, and it was only buildable to semi-sheer color coverage, which was also uneven. The pencil glided on without tugging, but you could feel the sparkle/glitter. It wore well for seven and a half hours before thinning. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Gonzo is described as a “electric blue matte with tonal shimmer.” It’s a brightened, light-medium blue with subtle silver sparkle over a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff in one stroke, and it was buildable to mostly opaque color coverage with two layers. The color wore well for eight and a half hours, while the consistency was lightly creamy and glided on well. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Vacancy is described as a “bright metallic teal.” It’s a brightened, blue-teal with a metallic sheen and cool undertones. It had semi-opaque pigmentation in one layer, and it was buildable to opaque coverage with two layers. It wore well for nine hours before thinning. The pencil was creamy and required a lighter pressure initially, until the tip softened slightly. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Voodoo is described as a “bright metallic purple with dimensional sparkle.” It’s a medium-dark, subtly warm-toned purple with a multi-colored sparkle. It had semi-sheer color payoff in one stroke, and it was buildable to semi-opaque color at best, which was somewhat uneven. The consistency felt a little waxy, though it didn’t tug on the lash line. The color wore well for eight hours before fading on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Smokeout is described as a “rich taupe-black satin.” It’a dark, subtly warm-toned taupe with a satin finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage in one pass, which was buildable to mostly opaque color coverage in two layers. The consistency was lightly creamy and glided on without dragging. It wore well for eight and a half hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Perversion is described as a “blackest black matte.” It’s a deep, dark black. This is part of the permanent range. It is one of the creamier pencils by Urban Decay, so it has really good color payoff that goes on smoothly and evenly. It wears nine to ten hours on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I still use many of the eyeliners I got from the 15th anniversary set quite happily, but admit in re cent times I’ve found my interest shifting to Ardency Inn and Marc Jacobs. This isn’t enough to recapture my heart, too many samey colors! Maybe if it had more variety 🙁

Carrie Avatar

Me too. Uzi and Stray Dog are workhouse colors for me when I’m not wearing something with more color. These recent releases/kits just aren’t quite there.

This is a perfect example of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”
I personally was looking forward to an Ocho Loco 3 as I missed out on the first two. I have the black market set from last year and some other full-sized singles and really love them. I use them almost everyday. But I must say I am underwhelmed by both this set and the Vice 3. Ah well, pennies saved. Let’s see who else sways my pennies instead!

Alexis Avatar

I was really looking forward to an Ocho Loco 3 as well! I was very disappointed when they released these instead. I LOVE every color from Ocho Loco 2 and had I known that this is what they were going to do instead, I would have bought 2 sets of Ocho Loco 2! I really hope that Urban Decay steps up their game with the Spring/Summer 2015 collection.

After a year of MJB liners and others rising beyond my expectations, these are pungently numbing. Yet I must conclude your looks at the end are swimming enchantedly!! GORGEOUS, girl! You GO! Rock it!! Did you like all the Seinfelds? 😀

Julie Avatar

Ok, I’m full of questions today… I have oil slick & ether…I don’t really mind the pigmentation of those, because I like to wear them on my lower lash line for softer definition (harsh, dark lines just don’t look as good in my old age!). Would you say the sparkly shades here are similar in texture to them, which I could live with, or worse? I just LOVE so many of these colors!

Julie Avatar

Haha! Yeah…guess I’m a weirdo :). I will say, I’ve found personally that the texture & pigmentation of the sparkly & shimmery shades seem to improve noticeably after 2-3 sharpenings… I experienced that with oil slick, ether, & mushroom.

StrangeOne Avatar

The colours are too similar to last year’s set that I had to go back to your review to check. I also wanted to get star gazer, moonspoon and faint and they’re mostly duds. I mostly buy in sets and value packs so I’m really bummed.

I never met a UD liner I didn’t like…..until today. It’s really a sad day for UD, when Milani shows them up on a color. (Or was that 2?) But good for us, when we’re paying attention. All together, NOT a great offering. A lot of near dupes in their line alone, and the eyelid is a pretty small space. The more unique shades faired pretty badly. It would be nice if faint became a double pencil for Naked basics 2. Definitely not biting on this set, although UD does far better than MJ for me, on both waterline/tightline. MJ just melts off + not evenly, either. Looks like i let a five year old apply it. Course my skin chemistry is weird: all cream cheek disappears in 1/2 to 1 hour…even an old boldy like Nars Turkish red. I can put on creamy bozo cheeks, and within an hour, pppppppoooooooffff! Gone. So the MJ thing didn’t really surprise me.

xamyx Avatar

I’ve been favoring softer, more ethereal looks lately (since picking up the KvD palettes), so I can get behind the lighter pigmentation. However, UD pencils just sort of disappear on me… This is an easy pass for me, but if this set were any other brand, I’d still buy it-every shade is just gorgeous!

Sylirael Avatar

Hmph. I am disappointed with Stargazer! There are some nice ones here (Gonzo, Mugshot, etc), but I think overall most of the colours are wither too sheer, to warm or too redundant for me 🙁 This is really upsetting me actually (well, in so far as I can ever really be ‘Upset’ over makeup 😉 ), because UD liners are like my favourite thing ever!

Kelly Avatar

Such a disappointment. I was looking forward to seeing which liners UD put out for the holidays, and this is a definite skip for me.

While sheerer eyeliners have their place in my eye makeup looks, I don’t need a set that is almost all sheer eyeliners! 🙁 I wish they sold Vacancy and Gonzo full size; now those two, I would buy in a heartbeat.

Helene Avatar

I guessed these liners would get quite bad grades. Such a pity when the colours could have been so fantastic and espceially a pity when I think of Glitter Rock! I like sparkly/shimmer liners for the lower lashes,. but I’ll not buy these.

Alison Avatar

OK, I just got my order from UD (I got Vice 3 and Ten). I just swatched Moonspoon, Glitter Rock, Stargazer, and Smokeout and they seem more opaque than yours! I’m pleasantly surprised. But how odd, don’t you think? Maybe it’s my skin tone – I’m rather pale – but that doesn’t really make sense.

For example I feel like Stargazer is a lighter (and with some sparkle) version of Honey (discontinued) which was a very creamy, very highly pigmented shade (I love that shade; I bought 3 of them when I found out that shade was getting discontinued and I still use it frequently!). Speaking of discontinued shades, I’m glad I have the 24/7 pencil of Lucky now that Lucky is an eyeshadow!

On an unrelated note, Christine, aren’t you a JD/Esq.? I’m taking the LSAT this coming Saturday. Getting my order today was such a treat after studying all day. Anyways, great blog obvs, I’m a loyal reader. You rock!

Christine Avatar

It’s possible that your fairer skin makes them pop a little more. The other thing is that size matters – a swatch is usually a bit closer-up and therefore clearer (to see all that there is to see, for better or worse!) than if you look at it on your arm, so it may appear a little more pigmented? Those are the only two things I could think of, aside from batch variations or that they may be inconsistent in general.

I graduated with a JD/MBA, but I’m not a practicing attorney (I blog full-time)! Good luck on your LSAT! 🙂

Sophie Avatar

I really feel this set has been given an unfair rating. Having received it this morning, I was quite surprised (given the low rating on this website, particularly for a UD product) how pigmented the pencils were. The quality was easily comparable to the Ocho Loco set, which temptalia rated as an ‘A’. I didn’t notice any under performers, though of course some will naturally outshine others, I found that all were pigmented, smooth, and can be built up to opacity, despite Christine’s issues with particular shades (glitter rock, stargazer). I completely respect her judgement and opinion, but I can only think that she received a dud set. I felt it necessary to post this comment so others were aware that not everyone had such a negative experience with these liners.
