Make Smoky Eyes Pop with Colored Eyeliner

Urban Decay Smoked Eyeliner Set ($38.00 for 6 x 0.03 oz.) contains six travel-sized pencil eyeliners, including two set-exclusive shades: Uzi (gunmetal taupe with silver micro-glitter), Zero (zealous black), Demolition (deep brown matte), Smog (copper), Empire (dark eggplant satin), and Mainline (dark green/blue matte).

  • Uzi is a brown-tinged gray with a silver sparkle. It looks more silver-like when applied, but the sheerer or more smudged it is, the browner it looks. It has so-so color payoff in a single pass.
  • Zero is a medium-dark black with a mostly matte finish. It had good pigmentation in a single stroke, and it’s a good basic black.
  • Demolition is a medium-dark brown with subtle warm undertones and a matte finish. Like Zero, it’s a good basic shade of brown. The color payoff is decent in a single pass, but it layers well. MAC Brownborder is warmer, redder-toned. Milani Brown is similar; a touch cooler-toned.
  • Smog is a coppered-bronze with a pearly sheen. It had decent to good payoff in one go.
  • Empire is a violet purple with very, very fine blue micro-shimmer–the shimmer isn’t noticeable on, and it looks mostly matte when applied. It didn’t have great color payoff in a single pass, but it was buildable. MAC Permaplum is similar but more shimmery.
  • Mainline is a blue-teal with a matte finish. It had decent pigmentation in a single go, and it layered fairly well. Estee Lauder Electric Teal is more turquoise and lighter.

For many years, Urban Decay’s 24/7 Eye Pencils were my favorite eyeliners, and while they’re not my absolute favorites, I still love them and use them regularly.  They wear eight hours on me without migrating or disappearing, and they come in a variety of colors, making the range versatile and easy to go to.  Urban Decay’s eyeliner sets are an excellent way to get multiple colors for a fraction of the price of them full-sized.  Keep in mind, full-size is 0.04 oz., and these are 0.03 oz. a pop–25% less but each liner costs $6.33 (compared to $19.00).  This set contains $85.50 worth of eyeliner, so it’s a great deal.  Urban Decay eyeliners are buildable, and they’ll look opaque when layered (go back-and-forth once or twice).

I was wondering something : how can I prevent the eyeliners to smudge on the waterline? I just bought a palette from UD and there was the 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Perversion… When I apply it to my waterline, it migrate in the corner of my eyes within 2 hours or so. I have tried to apply one layer, let it dry, and then apply another layer, but it didn’t help.
I thought that with the UD eyeliners I would have no problem anymore with migration/smudging because I was using cheap liners before 🙁

I’d love these if they were truly “24/7” on me but they’re not…within 3 hours, I’ve got smears, smudges and fading. I do keep trying them but they’re just not the best for my skin-type or eye shape or something (I wish they were – truly I do!)

I can’t decide whether to get this or the ocho loco set….oh decisions decisions. These are my favorite eyeliner formula so I can never have too many of them. I’ll probably go for the ocho loco because there are more of them in the set and who doesn’t want an extra grind house sharpener? I am a total hoarder of these pencils so…maybe I should just get both! Hahahaha

Thanks for the review! Have been wanting to check them out but Ulta doesn’t have testers for them. Will have to skip this set because the only ones I need are Smog and Mainline.

This looks soooo great, and I was waffling between buying this and the Ocho Loco set, but I’m glad I decided on Ocho Loco. Pricier, but I love the variety and I definitely prefer getting Perversion as my black instead of Zero! UD 24/7s are definitely my HG eyeliner so now I’m all stocked up for the next year or two 🙂

I may dabble on one brand’s product here and there, but I have consistently bought UD shadows and pencils. These pencils are so creamy and they do last. I dont put it on my waterline. I dont own this set, but overall, these liners do not tug on my eyes to apply the color. I dont even use the other brands anymore, since UD comes with almost every color imaginable.

I *love* Empire, but I’ve had such bad luck with Zero & Whiskey (which fortunately came with palettes) I’m afraid to actually try these. I haven’t braved Perversion, yet, but maybe I’ll have better luck with it, and it’ll sway me…

I’ve never tried the UD ones (I use MUFE’s Aqua Eyes myself and just recently discovered something even better–Giorgio Armani’s Waterproof eyeliners!! SO amazing!!), but I AM curious about the formula and I DO really like the colors in this set–more so than the MUFE eyeliner set that is out right now. I might have to pick this one up! Empire and Uzi are so pretty!

I have a bit of a grudge against Urban Decay because they’re unavailable (as far as I’m aware) in Australia/New Zealand. I could order this from overseas, but I don’t want to be spending my money on a company that hasn’t made the effort to expand here yet.

Zainab Avatar

Amen. However if a full sized Mainline showed up on eBay I think my resolve would crumble. Even though it’s been a pain to order all the UD products I own on eBay I actually think I got them at better prices than whatever absurd jacked up price they’d be if the brand was sold in Aus.

Lisa Avatar

I kind of feel the same way, I’ve been looking at UD products for such a long time and only ordered stuff recently. The only actual palette I bought was the Rollergirl palette from TradeMe. If they do expand here though, it will be so pricey!

Jade Avatar

Glad I’m not the only one! I think it’s also a bit of “Everyone loves this so I’m going to be contrary and avoid them!” going on. Sometimes I can be really odd LOL

I wonder though if it WILL be a huge price increase. Illamasqua have recently lowered their Aus prices, not that I’ve ever bought their products, because they’re not available in Western Australia. I’ve noticed that some online retailers in Australia sell their products for almost the same price as the US, or only slightly more. Lipstick Republic is one of them, they sell OCC lip tars for $16 AUD, which is EXACTLY the same as OCC’s US website!!

In Australia almost every brand you buy from a counter, though, has a 40% markup compared to the US. New Zealand is even worse, and even drugstores almost NEVER do buy-one-get-one. It’s so sad over here.

Umm, what’s the rules on comment thread hijacking??

I ended up ordering Mainline of of Ebay on it’s own because I loved the shade so much but the rest wasn’t worth the $48 CAN to but the set for me. I just could stop thinking about when I tested it in store last month. lol

I got this for christmas and fell in love wit the color smog but its limited edition! 🙁 Has anyone been able to find a dupe to the eyeliner pencil in the color smog? I know urban decay has a liquid liner version, but i’m new to makeup and prefer pencil.
