Urban Decay Pocket Rockets in Max & Colin Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Urban Decay Pocket Rockets

Urban Decay’s Summer Pocket Rockets: Max & Colin

Urban Decay’s Pocket Rocket Lip Glosses ($19.00 for 0.27 oz.) are non-sticky, thick enough to be moisturizing but thin enough not to feel heavy, and have a burnt caramel scent (well, creme brulee, officially). I’ve always found the Pocket Rockets to be a little gimmicky for my taste, but the formula is really cushy–it gives lips a slightly plumper, fuller look (without actually plumping).

After reviewing a fair amount of Urban Decay lip products, I’ve noticed that there’s a definite debate on whether the scent of their lip products is yay or nay. It doesn’t bother me, but if you’re sensitive or particular about your scents, you may want to give these a sniff in-store before purchasing.

  • Max is a semi-opaque pinky-nude cream with a glossy finish. Since it’s creamy and pale, it does settle a bit into lip lines, but it’s not too bad.
  • Colin is almost like a coral-red that applies sheerly for the most part, but it does add quite a bit of red to your pucker. It kind of looks like you’ve been eating cherries and slicked some gloss on afterward. I found it did fall into my lip lines a tad, but again, from a normal viewing distance, it’s not a big deal. I did, however, think this one tended to give my lips a more splotchy look–I think the color may not work for me so much!

Recommendation: If you love the idea of a gloss that also features a half-naked man, you might get a kick out of Urban Decay’s Pocket Rockets. There’s a nice non-sticky and moisturizing gloss that comes along with the near-nude model, too!

Thank you Christine for now including face shots with your lip swatches. I really appreciate you doing this because it allows people to get a better sense of the colour when compared to your skin tone.

Kim Avatar

Hey Christine, I was wondering what camera do you use to take your pictures? The quality is amazing! Maybe a particular lens that you use as well?

Kerry Avatar

i love the look of both of these but i tried one one time and had to take it off straight away because of the smell and taste! not for me unfortunately.. pretty colours though 🙂

Megan Avatar

love the lip swatches with your whole face!!

Is it true that the pocket rocket lip glosses have phermones in it? I read that somewhere..

You know, I got a deluxe sample size of one of these (don’t remember which…) and despite the smell (it’s not terrible, but it is cloying) I do love the formula. And I really like this nude color here. But I really, really can’t stand the naked man gimmick. I find it really tasteless and ugly and kind of alienating. (I mean what? Is every person who’s into makeup supposed to be attracted to men?) And I would be *totally* embarrassed to whip that tube out say, at work or something!

daphne Avatar

(So tell me Christine…know of any dupes for “Max”? Any brand or price as long as it doesn’t have that stupid packaging? :P)

Violet Avatar

I completely agree about the “naked man gimmick.” The last thing I want to be thinking about or even looking at when I’m applying makeup is some random naked guy I have never met.

Michelle Avatar

I got a sample of one of these from Sephora. It was a pretty fushia type color. Unfortunately, I am sensitive to smell — and I just didn’t care for the smell at all. To me it smells like burnt brown sugar LOL. And, the half naked guy is just gimmicky for me (not something I want my 3 little girls seeing!).

I have one of these (Doug, I think, the nice sparkly pink one), but I don’t like it because on my lips it’s a lot sheerer than in the tube, and also I hate the smell and taste of it. I love Urban Decay, but these glosses are terrible.

Amy Avatar

Aw–I was so excited when I saw that red and coral in the package, but they do seem quite thin when applied. Thanks for the posts-your swatches are so helpful.

Sebastien Avatar

I think that all the pocket rockets are really fun and I want to like them, but the taste of them is so incredibly awful to me that I can’t even stand to try them on! Worst flavor ever for a lip product, imo.

penelope Avatar

love your face shot, it makes it so much better to tell if the product will compliments certain skin tones or not. thanks.

Kathy Avatar

These lipglosses disappoint me a lot, unfortunately. I love most of the colors, and I was very impressed with the quality on the sample I tried, but the packaging is such a turn-off for me. Sure, they’re funny and they would make good “silly” gifts for people, but I think they’re a bit tacky for everyday use. The packaging just kills it for me.

Anyway, I’m sad to say that these new colors are a bit disappointing. The “Max” color looks SO gorgeous in the tube, but I don’t think it looks that great on the lips. It’s much paler than I expected. 🙁

Angela Avatar

Christine, I just want to say that i love the fact that you’re including face shots! They are awesome, and it gives us a better idea of how it looks with your complexion! I think my skintone is very close to yours…in some ways i hate that b/c whatever looks good on you makes me want to buy it even more for me! 🙂

Tricia Avatar

Meh. I’ll pass. It looks like UD put more effort into the packaging and not the formula. I don’t even find any of the guys cute >_>

PS: I LOVE how you have the swatches set up now. Thank you so much Christine!

Sarah Avatar

I have a pocket rocket that I got as a free sample…although the formula is nice I can’t get past the smell, it makes me want to gag it is so strong and awful, it reminds me of buttered popcorn flavored jelly bellys or dum dums and something about that scent just makes me instantly nauseous…the few times i’ve tried to wear the gloss I can’t breathe through my nose til its gone so I think i’ll pass…

TG Avatar

Me too! I bought one and swatched it on my hand, and the smell was so repulsive that even after washing my hand I could still catch a whiff of it. It’s exactly like faux microwave buttered popcorn.

I gave it to a friend.

Marcia Avatar

This lip gloss smells horrible ! I got a sample size in the UD hall of fame collection, I totally can’t stand the smell of it. I’ve heard that it supposed to have a creme brulee scent, no, it smells like artificially made-up burned sugar over not fresh burned walnuts !
I could just throw up by sniffing it.

tnag Avatar

The Colin color is nice. It’s the exact red that I’ve been looking for but can’t find!
However, I don’t like the smell and goopiness of the UD Pocket Rockets. So yucky! Anybody know of a good dupe?

Rachel Avatar

I thought these looked fun & kitschy so I bought “Timothy”. I liked the color and consistency but the smell made me nauseous. Back it went. If UD would just lighten or eliminate the scent, these would be great glosses (with or without the gimmick).

Celeste Avatar

what happened to product swatches on your skin? those help me tell what the color really looks like. im really disappointed that those are gone 🙁

Celeste Avatar

so weird! i guess my computer didnt load the post. sorry! i really like colin because its a sheer pop of color but dont love the price because i feel like i would be paying for the packaging. any mac dupes?

Luisafer Avatar

as glosses they look great, the shape of the bottle I really like, but the little men in the cap I HATE, looks so cheap, like if you got it in a streap club

Katie Avatar

pocket rocket definitely has a smell different from all the other lip products. i’ve never noticed a smell at all with the lipsticks, and i have every shade but 3. i have all the XXX glosses, and they’re just a bit minty. i like the packaging, i think it’s cute and yes, i have had coworkers spot it, but they just laugh. maybe it’s just the people i work with. of course, i wouldn’t pull it out in front of a client!

Rachael Avatar

I love the colors of their glosses. Thanks so much for all your posts, they’re super helpful. It’s too bad these glosses smell so horrible. They’re strong but that wouldn’t bother me if they were fruity or something less horrible than chemically burnt popcorn. Ugh!

MissFlowerPixie Avatar

Thank you so much for the close-up, and very clear, pictures of lip colours, they’re so helpful! Even though I have typical ‘English Rose’ colouring I can still get a good idea of the shades. Much appreciated!
