Urban Decay & Oz: The Glinda Palette

Urban Decay Glinda Palette ($49.00 for 0.43 oz.) includes Tornado (vibrant deep purple shimmer), Aura (iridescent white with blue shift/Iridescent white with red shift), Magic (pinkish purple with a golden shimmer), Illusion (pale peach satin), Oz (gold with gold glitter/silver with silver glitter), South (warm pale gray shimmer with silver micro-glitter), Glinda Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color (light sheer nude), and Rockstar 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil (deep eggplant).

The eyeliner is 0.03 oz. ($14.25 value), while the lip pencil is 0.10 oz. ($19.00 value). There are six eyeshadow pans containing 0.05 oz. each ($108.00 value), though two of the six are split-pans, meaning they contain two eyeshadows in a single pan. The total value is $141.25. The eyeliner and six eyeshadow pans are housed within Urban Decay’s “Build Your Own Palette” interface, so all six pans can be popped out and you can insert another Urban Decay eyeshadow instead. The “empty” 6-pan palettes retail for $18.00 but include a travel-sized shadow brush and Walk of Shame eyeshadow.

Tornado is a rich, dark purple with pink-red undertones and a shimmered, frosted finish. The color payoff was excellent, and the texture was soft, dense, and buttery which made for a very smooth, even application. Guerlain Attrape-Coeur #3 is lighter. Urban Decay Vice is lighter. Urban Decay Gravity is lighter and less red-toned. Urban Decay Freakshow is similar but still a bit lighter–the undertones are comparable.

Aura actually contains two shades. The first is a pale white with an iridescent pink duochrome finish.  Guerlain Attrape-Coeur #1 is purpler. I suspect something like MAC Pink Opal would also be comparable (but more frosted). The other half is a pale white with an iridescent blue-violet duochrome. MAC Vellum is similar but a bit lighter. The pigmentation on both of these was good, but they weren’t as dense/buttery as other Urban Decay eyeshadows.

Magic is a pink-lavender with a golden shimmer and satiny finish. It had good color payoff, and the texture was soft and finely-milled–but a wee bit powdery. MAC Supersweet is similar but more frosted/metallic. Guerlain Boulevard du Montparnasse #3 is pinker and doesn’t have a golden shimmer.

Illusion is a soft champagne with warm, golden undertones and a frosted, metallic finish. It had a really smooth, soft feel and had great pigmentation. Estee Lauder Halo is warmer and a cream product. MAC Dew is a touch darker. MAC Baby, It’s Cold… is less metallic, more frosted. MAC Dazzlelight is lighter. Wet ‘n’ Wild Comfort Zone #1 is similar but less metallic.

Oz also contains two shades. The first is a rich, metallic gold with soft yellow undertones and a brown base (giving it a deeper look) along with a ton of silver micro-glitter. The micro-glitter absolutely gets everywhere; it is so packed with it. It was also a pain to remove with just a brush, so I had to use makeup remover to get the majority off. Urban Decay Maui Wowie is really similar, though it has less glitter (but still has some) and is perhaps a touch lighter but not by much. It is paired with a bright medium silver with a frosted, metallic finish and silver micro-glitter. The glitter in this shade was less noticeable, but it was still there.
L’Oreal Primped & Precious is very similar. MAC Silver Sleet is comparable. Inglot #448 is a touch less metallic.

South is a dark taupe with a frosted, metallic finish; it’s a mix of gray and brown with cool undertones. theBalm Selfish is less metallic. Urban Decay Mushroom is grayer. Urban Decay Pistol is similar but less frosted/metallic.

Glinda is a soft, rosy beige with gold and pink shimmer. It’s semi-opaque, and it has nice, even coverage and didn’t take a lot of product to get there for it. The texture is very lightly tacky but not something I’d describe as sticky. It lasted four hours on me. It is actually the same color as Urban Decay Naked, when I swatched them side-by-side. MAC Supreme is slightly pinker. Guerlain Chant d’Aromes is darker.

Rockstar is a dark eggplant with subtle burgundy undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good color payoff in a single pass. I’ve used this shade quite a bit, and it’s definitely one of my favorite Urban Decay eyeliners. It wears eight hours on my lash line without fading or smudging.

Overall, the pigmentation of the products was good, while some were excellent and others were nice but not 100% perfect.  The biggest problem I’ve thus far encountered (I still need another four hours to fully test for wear, so I will update the longevity rating if anything falls above or below my typical wear time with Urban Decay’s eyeshadows) is in regards to the glitter fall out from the two shades with micro-glitter.

I had no problems applying, blending, or (so far) with the wear of the other shades.  The micro-glitter was frustrating to deal with while I applied the eyeshadow, but the few bits that did manage to get onto the lid, later made their way to places like my upper lip, nose, and chin.  Otherwise, the color themselves (including the ones with micro-glitter) have worn beautifully for the past four hours, and based on previous experience with Urban Decay’s formula, should wear for another four hours fairly well.  Again, I will update later tonight to reflect a full eight-hours of testing!

Thanks for the swatches! I like the packaging for this, but the colors are only okay. Light colors look kind of ashy on my eyelids so I normally stay away from them. Again, thanks for the fast review! 🙂

Dolce Avatar

I have to agree. I, too, stay away from pastels and light airy colors b/c they don’t do anything for me, but I know that lots of ladies will have fun with this palette.

Lisa Avatar

I know what you mean! I was hoping for something like Alice in Wonderland, but when I spoke to a UD MUA, they said that the “book of shadows” theme was retired after the forth book of shadows. Most collections will now come out like this, or the vice palette. No more pop-ups 🙁

Angie Avatar

Although I like this new direction, that is a bummer they won’t do the pop up style for at least a few, more whimsical themed palettes. I’m forever bummed I missed the AIW palette. It was lovely.

Rachel Marie Avatar

That was my first Urban Decay Palette 😀 Still have it & love it. While these palettes are more convenient for MUAs or those who travel a lot, I really did love the pop up palettes. So adorable

Kiki1988 Avatar

Wow, what a nice palette! Great review! Wasn’t sure if I wanted to spend my money on this palette but it looks like it’s a great deal, especially with my light skin tone.

But! A question: is “Magic” basically “SWF”? I’ve been wanting that color for a while now and it looks as though they are the same?

Teri Avatar

Tornado is absolutely to die for. When I saw both palettes I expected to dislike this one but it’s actually really nice! Love that UD included a Rockstar eyeliner :). You made a great look Christine!

Laura Tinapay Avatar

Man oh man Christine you’re killing me. I got the vice palette, the tf shadow bon bons and stila in the know palettes. Do i need this? It’s so beautiful and for $50 with an eyeliner and a lippie is actually decent price.

Fiaspice Avatar

Thanks for the quick review, I made up my mind and I’m getting it, I love all of the shades and I wanted a pink like that for some times.

Abbey Avatar

Yeah, Tornado is the only one I really feel like I NEED (as much as anyone “needs” purple eyeshadow). I will probably just buy one of the dupes. Thank you for saving me some money, Christine!

Denise Avatar

Oh man— I’m loving both of the Oz palettes… I need your help Christine! In your opinion which is the best palette and are they a “must have” product, beyond the marketing and novelty of the movie?

Kim Teague Avatar

I was at Sephora (inside my local JC Pennys) yesterday and I asked when the palettes would arrive the girl said they are in the back do you want to see them. I hadn’t seem swatches yet so I was nervous about buying either palette, but I got them both anyways :)I’m personally impressed with magic because I didn’t think it’d be that nice and Aura shows up so I’m so happy!

Veronica Avatar

Hnn, this review surprises me a little. When I saw the palette, I was all over it, but seeing it swatched, I realize that I can dupe about half this palette. The eyeliner and lippie make it more tempting, but I don’t often wear pencil liner or nude lip shades. I might actually wind up passing it over despite my earlier enthusiasm.

Veronica Avatar

Oh goodness, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to infer that the review itself was problematic! I should have worded that better. What I mean is that I’m surprised to see how how the palette swatched, since it didn’t look as comparable to my collection in the original promo image.

I think grading would be a whole lot harder if dupeability was a required category. 😛

Kristen Avatar

I choose the WORST time for a makeup no buy! LOL I really, really, REALLY want this. But… I will have to pass. The purple is beautiful and I love you for posting dupes so I can reference back later!

t_zwiggy Avatar

Hahahah, I just went to see what mascara you used here (something I NEVER do) because I thought those were some serious clumps, and it turns out it’s my most hated makeup product ever, lol. I do like the rest of your makeup, though 😉

Amy Avatar

Kinda happy I don’t like the colors much xD saved some money! Still though, was hoping this would be more airy and pastel-y. The only color that would give me that kind of airy look on my NC/NW 5 skin would be Aura…

Jade Avatar

Wow! This is so cool! I ususlly turn my nose up at Urban Decay as I can’t get it here in Australia, but WOW I really like all those colours!

18thCenturyFox Avatar

Whew, no regrets on passing on this one. I love the name for Tornado but feel like I have a million colors that look like that, the only unusual one to me being Magic.

Laurel Avatar

I feel like I am the only one bothered by the fact these don’t come with lids. I know you can “swap out for other UD shadows” but what if I wanted to take one shade with me?? That would be the ultimate palette from UD-pretty much the products they already have (the single shadows with lids that can go in a palette) but way discounted and awesome new colors, with a eyeliner and lippie. I guess it’s too good to be true haha

Heather Avatar

Personally I already have 2 build your own pallets so I already have a bunch of the outer cases laying around at home (i have even thrown a few out). If you really want to take just one with you just swap it with a normal UB eyeshadow you alreay have. No reason you can swap out a normal single with one of these.

Emi at Project Swatch Avatar

I love Tornado so much, and I want to love Oz, but that chunky glitter looks like a giant mess.

Regarding the palette, I’m also wondering if you could remove the plastic insert to fit more shadows in the box / make it a freestyle palette – I don’t like how much space the packaging wastes.

Stacie Avatar

Question. Do the individual shadows come with lids, like they normally do? I like how you could sub other singles. But I would only do that if they had lids.

Kesha Avatar

As Christine mentioned, if you already have individuals that you purchased in the new casing and you kept the case (assuming you purchased the empty palette and put those individuals in it) then you can pop these into those cases. I have a feeling that people will find these colors sold as individuals on Ebay by people doing just that (and selling them at the price of a regular single shadow…or more).

Beck Avatar

I just got these at my local Sephora. They haven’t put them out yet,but if to ask they can grab you one. I got them with out swatching because I knew they would be spectacular, I was right!
You can get them on the Ud site right now too. 50.00+ is expensive but you are getting a lot of full size shadows and the lip pencil which is full size too.also the mini eyeliner.
And the palettes reusable for other UD shades.

Janelle Avatar

I am curious if these can be used wet? I know the original UD ones can be, but I know that when they were recently acquired by Lancome (L’Oreal) the formulation changed. They look pretty intense not being used wet, but I am a sucker for that foiled look and Tornado and Magic have my name all over them. 🙂 I was kind of hoping that the new formula would have less fall out, but it seems to not be the case.

Carrie Ann Avatar

So pretty! Christine, is the Glinda lip pencil a new shade? The description sounds a lot like Naked, so I was wondering if they just renamed it for this palette.

Christina Avatar

I just saw the email from UD on this and I was like “hmm I’m gonna go troll Temptalia, but she probably doesn’t have a review up yet” Thanks for proving me wrong and being amazing yet again!

Lisa (LAtPoly) Avatar

Christine… Do you know how the “Glinda” lip pencil compares to the Super Saturated lip pencil in “Naked”? Is it really a new shade or just renamed? (Same with Theodora and “F-bomb”.)

zainab Avatar

The pink half of Aura looks a lot like NARS Himalaya. I really hope this turns up on eBay, but I expect I’ll be out of luck… Hope they make some of these singles.

Kimberly Avatar

I love these reviews — as soon as I saw your swatches I went to the UD site and picked the Glinda up. One quick question though, when you did your eyeshadow for these pictures, did you line the underside of your eye first and then add the pink, or did you put the eyeshadow on first and then eyeliner under your eye?

Sarah Grace Avatar

I ordered this as soon as the photo showed up on your Facebook page! I really wish they had left out Oz and made the two shades in Aura full-sized. No one needs more silver/gold eyeshadows, but shimmery duochrome white/blurple sounds incredible!

Gloria Avatar

I could not agree with you more Sarah! This palette is so pretty and just calls out Spring to me, but I could have done without another glitter-bombed gold and silver eyeshadow. Those duocrhomes on the other hand are gorgeous! I hope maybe one day Urban Decay releases them in full size, because I would be all over that 😛

Heather Avatar

Cant wait to get mine in the mail I ordered it as soon as i saw your swatches. Been waiting to see your review before committing thanks Christine!

Janeen Avatar

Ugh, all I want is Tornado! Wish they could’ve swapped out one of the browns in the Theodora palette and put Tornado in it. 🙁 Such an amazing rich plum/purple!

Ana Avatar

I suppose this would be eventually sold here by Sephora which is the only place I can get Urban Decay. I will check and buy depending on price. The price I’m calculating is around $80.

Chrissy Avatar

Ughhh, Aura is SO PRETTY! I really wish it were both colors full sized though, and then I would probably get it just for them… But I still might get it just for Aura…

Angie Avatar

Both of these are gorgeous, well coordinated palettes. I love the ability to rearrange your palette how you want and the inclusion of the lip pencils. However, I feel I have all of these colors in some form, being that I love UD so much, so I’m passing. I’d be essentially paying for the palettes and lip pencils, personally, making $49 each too much for that. But they’re great and I like the direction UD is going with their palettes. Hope they do just a palette like this and maybe only include one unique, complimentary eyeshadow as a cheaper option for those of us with loads of UD eyeshadow in the future!

Megan Avatar

I really like Aura, Magic, and Illusion. Tornado is also pretty. But none of the other shades suit me very well, and I’m not a fan of that lip color for my skin tone. Christine, would you say Magic is similar to Tainted from the 15th Anniverary Palette?

In terms of packaging, the Theodora palette is GORGEOUS. And I prefer that lip color over the one in the Glinda palette, but the shades from that palette are too dark for my skin. Some gorgeous packaging and colors, but I’m not sure if I’ll pick up Glenda or not. Magic and Aura are what really have my attention, well and the lip color from Theodora.

Eli Avatar

I went to Ulta today and they said it would be for sale Wednesday. They already have it in the back but can’t sell it until then. Ulta is also having 20% off this week for rewards members!

Jenny Avatar

Urban is included in the 20% off if you have 1 of 2 coupons going on. The first is friends and family, and the other is a postcard that is sent out to rewards members who spend a certain amount of $ at Ulta.

Morgan Avatar

Thanks so much for the swatches! I was just wondering how many of these have microglitter in them? I just picked up the UD sustainable palette and I’m thinking about bringing it back because there is so much micro glitter :(. It gets everywhere, do you know how this compares?

Olivia Avatar

neither of these palettes really appeal to me : ( paying $50 for 6 full size eyeshadows will never seem like a good deal after the BOS’s and the Naked 1 & 2 palettes. I know it comes with a lip color, the tin, and the eyeliner, but I don’t need any of that. hahah.

I’m actually really happy I haven’t liked UD’s recent releases (Vice was a good bargain, but I wasn’t a fan of the shades/had dupes for half of them) because it’s saved me a lot of money! Which I invested in a Sigma brush kit & kabuki XD. However, I can’t wait until they come out with the next must-have for me! Looks like it won’t be for a while though : (

layla Avatar

i agree….all these shades can be duped….and once on the eye…all pinks…and all browns…start looking the same on this website…shown on the eyes….looks no different than last yrs…or 2004…same..same…same…how many ways can any brown eye shadow or black shadow from diffrent brands look so so diffrent?..THEY DONT! THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME AS MY BF SAYS. U LOOK THE SAME FROM LAST YR..HOW MUCH DOES IT CHANGE YOUR LOOKS? change your hair…go blonde if your black or brown..then ur talkin yall!

Megan Avatar

@Christine, thanks for the comment regarding Tainted. 🙂 I went back and looked at your swatches after commenting, it definitely shows up more purple on you. On my skin it’s more of a pinkish lilac, it doesn’t show much purple on me, to be honest. 🙁

Amanda Avatar

Christine, your reviews are fantastic! I love love love reading them – they are highly informative but also very objective. And I REALLY love that you’ve started posting a creative look that goes along with these UD palettes…I refer to them all the time (especially the Vice Palette review!). Just wanted to say thank you, and keep up the great work! I’m a huge fan 🙂

Amber Avatar

I love the look you created with this pallette, but I’m having some trouble re-creating it. Would you mind telling me which shades you used in which pictures…some of the shades are hard to tell in the pictures. Thank you!

Sally Avatar

Hey, does anyone know when these are coming out in the uk? Cause I kinda need these palettes in my life & no-one seems to know if/when they are being released over here….x

Amber Avatar

It’s really bothering me that I left a comment earlier this afternoon…and now it’s nowhere to be found. I’m curious as to why it was deleted? Or is it just not showing because comments are screened?

18thCenturyFox Avatar

I’m so ashamed. I totally steamrolled my intentions and bought Theodora. I have totally sworn off UD for ethical reasons (no shade on anyone who loves them), but I was returning something at Sephora and I had store credit. Then I recalled the commenter that mentioned how one side of the Jealous duo resembled the DCed Acid Rain. I wandered in a fugue state to the display and found my muscles moving towards the palette without express written permission from the command center. It looked awfully close to my long lost, well beloved shadow. And damn if I didn’t walk out there with that palette in tow. Despite my dislike for Kunis, my ban on UD, the unexpected smallness of the palette… I am preparing my Twinkie Defense as we speak.

Robin Manrique Avatar

Almost bought Theodora, but every color is so easily dupible and the usual colors I gravitate to. So after your review and the swatches on Sephora (I’m pale but yellow based) I tried Glinda out at Ulta to break out of my color rut. Since I love duochromes (hotspot by BE is one of my favorites)and the colors scream spring AND it’s in the new palette system I broke down and bought it. So much for reining in my makeup spending this year!!!!!

Eleanore Avatar

I bought both palettes, thinking I’d love Theodora the most, but I actually seem to be using Glinda a load more! I also remember thinking from your swatches that the lip colour wouldn’t suit me, but it turns out that it is EXACTLY the same colour as my natural lips! Crazy!

Alma Avatar

Am I the only person that really dislikes this palette? My first impression of both palettes was less than good, but after seeing swatches and reviews I changed my mind. I’m so disappointed in the awful formula of the glenda palette. I’m pretty naturally tan, an NC37-40, and couldnt get the colors to work for me with a primer and really had to pack on the color even with a base. I really love ud e/s and use them daily so i could tell right away that the formula wasnt as creamy and pigmented on either palette. I even went as far as to compare my naked palettes and book of shadow colors to confirm my theory and i was right. I also have a gripe with the new packaging, because the removable pans are good in theory but mot practical. I had to try for maybe ten minutes to put the eyeshadow back in its slot correctly. My final thought is that even with the 20% discount these weren’t even close to being worth the price, save your money for something else!!

tarah Avatar

i bought this pallet because of the oz and aura eyeshadows, i dont care for the eyeliner or the lip color, the other eyeshadows are okay, i was greatly dissapointed with this pallet not because i wish the 2 eyeshadows i like were full sized =( it would have been nice if they were, but because of the packaging is such terrible quality , i opened it like 3 or 4 times and am finding its not bending to close and click together i have to work at it a bit to line up to shut, they could really have done a better job with the packaging!! i give the packaging an F !!!!
