Urban Decay Gash Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches (2014)

Urban Decay Gash Lipstick
Urban Decay Gash Lipstick

Urban Decay Gash Lipstick ($22.00 for 0..09 oz.) is described as a “deep red with tonal shimmer.” It’s a medium-dark, cool-toned red with ruby red micro-shimmer and a luminous shine. Chanel La Desiree (327) (LE, $34.00) is more matte, brighter. MAC Just a Bite (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery. NARS Mascate (P, $26.00) is less cool-toned, matte. MAC Runaway Red (LE, $16.00) is less glossy. Guerlain Liu (P, $35.00) is similar. Chanel Rouge Byzantin (LE, $34.00) is slightly pinker, less glossy, brighter. See comparison swatches.

It’s exclusive, limited edition shade to Urban Decay’s website, so you won’t find it as the usual suspects like Sephora. When I compared this shade to the previously released Gash (in the older formula), the color was spot-on. The shade was nicely pigmented and yielded mostly opaque color coverage. The texture of the new formula doesn’t feel quite the same as the rest of the Revolution lipsticks, though; it’s slightly stiffer in comparison, though it doesn’t tug or pull at lips while being applied–it’s just not as noticeably creamy or as emollient as the other shades in the range. It was also somewhat tacky, but it adheres well, applies smoothly, and pretty much wears for hours on end. It was still going strong after eight hours (including a meal) with the color being even, bold, and the only component missing was that it wasn’t as shiny (but it wasn’t fully matte either). The formula was moderately hydrating over time as well; I never felt like I needed lip balm, even after eight hours of wearing this shade.

Gash is such a gorgeous deep red lipstick. I’m finding it extremely tempting, as I wrestle with the ‘when’ I should purchase the Electric Palette and what I should add to my order to bump it up to free shipping. (That’s always how they get us, isn’t it???) BUT BUT BUT… I have so many red lipsticks already!

Which is the same reason this is LE, *and* exclusive to their website… I really like this shade, but the whole thing is a complete turnoff. I was considering the Electric palette, but now I’m not sure I want to bother with UD any more. It’s not like they need to pull a stunt like this due to low sales, in which case I’d understand.

I bought so many backups, I am going to pass. I like the old formula, and they keep well in my old milk chute. I have about six backups, so I will be passing on this for now.

I am seriously obsessed with the formula. I probably own 8 of them with the coordinating lip liner. I have seriously dry lips and all of the ones I have feel great on. I have never tried Buxom but UD Revolution is totally worth every penny.

This is gorgeous – I love the almost lit-from-within glow it gives off.

I know you did the scarlet season a while back, have you thought about doing something similar? There are just so many beautiful reds that you’ve covered since then.

Thanks Christine for doing a review on the UD gash lipstick. I was contemplating on buying this but now I’m going to buy it for sure. You know how it is when it comes to wearing red lipstick sometimes with some shades I worry that I may look ridiculous. Are you planning to review the rest of the UD 2014 summer releases such as the chaos nail polish, new perversion eyeliners and heavy metal loose glitter?

Kate Avatar

I ordered the Electric palette as soon as it was released and I was so annoyed I had to buy something for free shipping. $1? Seriously? After seeing this review I wish I had ordered Gash instead of Catfight. It looks gorgeous on you.

Thu Avatar

I was rather heartbroken that the Revolution lipstick line didn’t include Gash when initially released, so this made me one happy ducky. Gash is probably my second favorite red lipstick.

I bought this the minute I saw it was available, but I actually found the color NOTHING at all like my previous tube of Gash! Mine is super old, in the metal shotgun shell tube, so that may have something to do with it. It’s so old it has gone sort of gummy. But the old one is way darker and less pink, and more metallic. I compared it to the ancient bottle of Gash polish I have, too, and it’s not even close to a match either.

I’m glad I got it, but am very disappointed. It won’t be replacing the old tube despite how difficult the old one is to use due to age.

Veronica Avatar

I’m enormously tempted by this. I own dupes for most of the rest of the line, but this one is gorgeous…and it’s close to Chanel Byzantine, a product I’ve always wanted to dupe. Shame it’s LE, though – it would look gorgeous in the main line!

Tracy Avatar

Did you apply straight from the tube or using a lip brush? I loved the color but it was underwhelming coverage on me – I used a lip brush but am wondering if I need to go straight from the bullet.

kasey Avatar

I’m just disappointed they didn’t add the lip pencil too, I love how dark the gash pencil is and can’t find another liner like it

Rachel Avatar

Does anyone else remember the Urban Decay Gash nail polish ad in magazines in the 90s? I loved that ad so much! I wish they would bring back the Gash nail polish. I had one of their other polishes called ACDC (metallic purple) and it was great. Okay, nostalgic moment over!

Brittany Avatar

I just can’t get over the name… But no one has mentioned it so maybe I am the only one who thought that it was a little offensive?

millihelen Avatar

I think it’s silly for this to be LE. Gash is apparently a cult classic for Urban Decay, so why would they not release it in their new lipstick line, especially since there’s no extant color comparable? I hate feeling pressured into buying LEs. It is terribly pretty, though. I’m tempted to get it except I think it would overpower my coloring.

But I may never get the chance again! Gah.

Elizabeth Avatar

I have to agree. I have been wearing it since it came out in every formula, from Lip Gunk, original formula, the last formula, the lip pencils, all of it. I only wish they would keep it. I shot them a question about releasing Gash when the Revolution formula came out, but they told me that they were going to be releasing other colors instead of Gash. I guess I wasn’t the only person who inquired about it. I hope it ends up being permanent, it has been my signature red forever.

sudeki Avatar

Damn… This is totally different with the old gash… But the gash I wished it to be… Though I have the old one I’ll have to pick it up

Hanna Avatar

I still have an OLD OLD OLD tube of this (from when UD lipsticks had the shotgun shell casing). It’s not really wearable anymore but I love it so I keep it as a sort of holy grail memory. It used to be super metallic, and not quite this shade. I really wish they would reproduce the actual original Gash!
