Urban Decay Feminine Palette
Feminine Palette: Stray Dog, SWF, Midnight Cowboy, Aquarius, Darkhorse, Ecstacy

Urban Decay Spring 2011: Feminine Palette

Urban Decay Feminine Eyeshadow Palette ($34.00 for 0.34 oz.) includes six eyeshadows: Stray Dog (cool medium brown), SWF (light cotton candy pink with silver micro-glitter), Midnight Cowboy (pink champagne with lots of silver glitter), Aquarius (aqua green with shimmer), Darkhorse (bronze patina), and Ecstacy (bright purple with slight pink tint). Also included is Zero 24/7 Liner (black) and Eden primer potion (nude).

  • Stray Dog is a cool-toned, taupe-tinged dark brown with a frost finish. This shade is part of the permanent range and available individually; it has also been in the Foreshadow palette.
  • SWF is a pale cotton candy pink with a bright metallic-frost sheen. This shade is part of the permanent range and available individually.
  • Midnight Cowboy is a gilded champagne bronze with flecks of champagne glitter. It has less fall out than Midnight Cowboy Rides Again, but it still has plenty of it to make one frustrated. This shade is part of the permanent range and available individually; it was also in the Cowboy Junkie set.
  • Aquarius is a pale aqua green teal with a silver metallic sheen. This shade is part of the permanent range and available individually.
  • Darkhorse is a darkened deep chocolate brown with flecks of bronze. This shade was in the Naked palette and is not available individually.
  • Ecstacy is a brightened, medium cool-toned violet purple with a soft frost finish. This shade is part of the permanent range and available individually; it was also in the Book of Shadows, Vol. 2. By the by, marginally annoyed that ecstasy is misspelled–imagine it was deliberate but find it annoying nonetheless! It is spelled correctly in the actual BoS Vol. 2, though…

my thoughts on the formula: Urban Decay’s eyeshadows are rich in pigment, apply evenly, and feel like butter. Generally speaking, their formula is excellent. I will warn and caution you against their shades with “glitter” or “sparkle” in the finish–some of these can be prone to fall out (for example, Midnight Cowboy Rides Again).

In terms of value, the palette includes 0.18 oz. of eyeshadow ($61.20 value), 0.03 oz. of eyeliner ($12.75 value), and 0.13 fl. oz. of primer potion ($6.88 value). The total value of the palette is $80.83, while the retail price is $34.

I think sometimes we lose sight of what the beauty industry and market are like as a whole — not every person purchases every palette or even much at all.  Not everyone enters at the same time, so even though you may find yourself owning many of the shades, it doesn’t make it a terrible product – Urban Decay does some really excellent shades that you can get year round, but these sure make those shades more accessible and affordable to people who don’t have a lot of Urban Decay or have always wanted to try it.  It would be great to see new shades, of course, but I recognize what value they may hold to others.

If you want to know more about how products are evaluated, read out Rating System FAQ! 🙂

  • Product: 28/30
  • Value: 10/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

final thoughts: In this palette, only Midnight Cowboy is the finicky shade, while five of the six are lovely.  Only Darkhorse is not available individually, but at least a couple shades here haven’t been in half a dozen palettes previously.  As long as you love at least two shades (and like one or two others), then it works out to be a deal, since two eyeshadows will run you $34 if purchased individually.

hm, i’m only liking the blue and purple, the rest just screams Naked to me. will you be doing any comparison swatches with colours from other brands? the blue looks like MAC steamy or this-name-that-escapes-me-atm, i’m at a point where i really don’t need any more dupes and i mean it!

steph (fanyechka) Avatar

guess i will be doing some running back and forth between MAC and Sephora to compare these 🙂 i think it’s good for newcomers to the brand, no doubt about it. my first UD palette is Show Pony and it’s a nice way to be introduced to a blue, a purple and some neutrals at a great price along with the UDPP and their eyeliner.

steph (fanyechka) Avatar

First, the Jack Black rec (yes that was me on facebook :D) and now this… you are my Person of the Year for real. That would be TOTALLY helpful thank you SO MUCH- I’m thinking MAC Steamy or Shimmermoss, I’d love to know what you think, are they similar (i have those two and I can’t really tell the difference)? this doesn’t have the gold sheen but it does look VERY metallic. The purple- is it like the purple that is in UD Vol.3? or UD Flash.

I’m always tempted by UD. They do know how to pack a good bundle albeit a rather bulky one for carrying around in a traincase 😀

Monique Avatar

They look really pretty. I also think the Naked palette looks so pretty, but the eyeshadow in UD palettes just look so shiny. I wish they’d make a matte one. Then I’d probably feel compelled to buy.

Dorna Avatar

I agree with you on the palette-collecting, but I still think there are better choices for people just getting into UD or for people who only want one palette. If they’re just getting into UD they’re better off w/ Naked or UDNYC, but if they don’t feel like they need more than one palette (blasphemy), the deluxe shadow box is a way better choice… four dollars more for three shades and it really covers all the basic necessities… black, neutrals and vibrants.

Marcela Avatar

i always love these UD palettes but i can’t justify buying any because my collection already includes 50 MAC shadows in pro palettes and i’ve already wasted so much money on building up that collection! maybe in another life i’ll collect UD or Too Faced =P

leesie Avatar

Oh, look at that–I don’t have as many of these as I thought I did! Amazing! I’ll have to check to make sure, but if that’s right, this one just earned higher priority.

jessica Avatar

I love this palette! it is my fav out of three..BUT I have never touched midnight cowboy rides again due to the fallout, but it is such a pretty shade..do you have any advice on how to wear it and prevent the fall out?

Connie Avatar

hi christine! great swatches!!! The only UD palette I have is Naked… are the pans in these the same size as their regular shadows/mac shadows?

Jordan Avatar

Christine, could you possibly do a look with this palette? I really want it, but I only ever wear neutral shadows. I’m wondering how you could make the two bright colors work for day. Thanks!

Emmaline Avatar

Do you know if sephora or ulta will be getting these? I have all the shades in the other palettes, but only one out of this one, plus a mini of my favorite udpp. I need another zero like I need a hole in my head, but I usually give those away.

Brit Avatar

Definitely a good point Christine. Even though so many colors are not LE it is STILL a a gorgeous palette! will this also be at sephora? I really want this one, but I can’t find any information anywhere about the availability of these (as in are they exclusive to UD, or will they be at Sephora and Ulta in a few weeks/months).

Carrie Ann Avatar

I think this is a must-have for me. I don’t have Stray Dog, SWF or Aquarius and I haven’t tried Eden Primer Potion yet. I think the packaging is cute as well. Luckily, this is the only new palette I want. The others are full of colors I already own in previous palettes.

Amanda Avatar

Oh yes people, I want this one! It’s funny- I used to love UD when I was in high school, and even went to an event at the San Francisco Sephora where I got a makeover and met Wendy (creator of UD). Over time I lost interest, but recently got back into the range..:) They’ve changed a lot over time as it turns out! I miss the lip gunks that smelled like cherry cola and other neat stuff.

Alexis Avatar

Do you know if Sephora will be carrying this as well? I really love the colors, except for Midnight Cowboy. I don’t know why they have to throw that into the majority of their palettes.

Amanda Enn Avatar

The packaging for this is an eyesore! And I only like three of the shades out of this palette; Dark Horse, Midnight Cowboy, and maybe Stray Dog. I think I’d rather buy the individual shadow instead.

Lori Avatar

Of all the new palettes, Dangerous is the only one that I already have every shadow/eye liner pencil in there. I will actually pick up both Feminine and Fun because there are some shadows in them that I don’t have but really want and it’s a bargain for me than spending $17 apiece on each one.

Julie Avatar

Wow, this palette looks so gorgeous! The packaging is really pretty and very, well, feminine! The only thing I have from UD is the Naked palette which I love, so I only have the shade called Darkhorse. This would be a neat way to expand my collection! I’m gonna keep my fingers crossed that beautybay.com will be stocking these at some point. Us europeans are pretty screwed when it comes to brands like this! But I did manage to snatch up my Naked palette from there, so we’ll see! 😀

Maya Avatar

Very pretty and I’m considering purchasing. Even the packaging is cute (although that won’t necessarily make me buy it)! I wish UD would lay off some of the dumb names (e.g. “Ecstacy”) because it’s just stupid and they actually make great quality products

Brittany Avatar

I own every single UD single eyeshadow in addition to the Naked & BOS III palettes…. just wanna say that it was good to see Christine touch on that subject. Yea I have all colors in all 3 new palettes, but not everyone does. I’ve collected MAC & NARS over the years & wanted to try UD. My first UD product was BOS III (yea I collected all of their individual shades quickly lolol) and I remember many UD addicts complaining because of the same shades in BOS III. I couldn’t identify with them because that was my first product! lol… So I also commend UD for releasing palettes like these with great value because we ALL started somewhere. It’s amazing how much money UD saves newbies with these wonderful palettes. This is a great way to introduce someone to the brand. If I were new to the company, I’d definitely get Fun and Feminine.

Brittany Avatar

LOL girl don’t be! It was easy to collect all their shades because there’s only around 50 or 60 something shades available… I REALLY hope that UD debuts between 5-10 new shades by the end of the year…. Some of their limited edition shades in the BOS III & Naked palette are so wonderful that I rarely use them because I won’t be able to repurchase them! lol Personally I don’t have a problem with their glitter shades because I do eyes first then foundation. Their matte shades aren’t chalky like MAC’s and are much easier to work with. If you’re new to the company, I strongly recommend their eyeshadows. 🙂

pamela Avatar

B minus for me. sorry the fact that this is sold to sometimes makeup newbies as a palette is bothersome. due to the factthat there will inevitably be a girl that uses a lot of the shades at once. dont do this. they are way to shimmery to be used together. they need to start including some MATTE shades in their palettes. nice colors although some of them are a bit 80’s to me. thanks for the great review

Heather Avatar

I’ve never been into UD other than their Primer potions (which I am obsessed with, I have all 4 lol), but I may get this palette. I’m a huge fan of NARS and Benefit for eyeshadows, but I may branch out 🙂

Airisu Avatar

Christine,
Would you say that Midnight Cowboy is the same/similar to Midnight Cowboy Rides Again but with less glitter? To be honest I LOVE the shade, it’s the glitter/fallout that drives me nuts. 😡 Thanks in advance. 🙂

Ariel Avatar

If you had to choose, which would you pick, the Urban Decay Show Pony Shadow Box or this one? I’m mostly interested in the browns and the purples. 😛

Vonvon Avatar

Hi Christine,

I happened to swatch NARS Habanera eyeshadow duo the other day and think that Aquarius seems to be quite similar to the aqua green/teal shade in that NARS duo. Would you mind to do a comparison swatch if you have the Habanera duo?

Thanks.

DarkGlamour17 Avatar

I bought this one. I only had one color in this paltte and that’s Dark Horse (which is my favorite brown ever!) So…I CAN’T WAIT TO GET IT! 🙂

kiwi Avatar

Hi, I love that you touched on the fact that this is good for those who don’t have many urban decay shadows, I only have 2 from the brand and they are both matte so this palette would be great for me. Do you know if and when these might be released in the UK? Thanks 🙂

Louise Avatar

Hey!
I bought this palette and I love it, I think they are lovely colors!! I juste wanted to add that, once I applied the zero pencil as a base on my lid, and then SWF, and I was very surprised to see the color of it: it was blue!! A nice one though!! So there is even a gorgeous metalic blue in this palette! 🙂
