Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. III

Sure we’ve all got our different styles (usually not including Carrie-style hotpants and tutus), but just like what we love about NYC, this Book of Shadows is a melting pot of color. The ribbon pull drawer reveals 16 natty eyeshadows, deluxe-minis of our award-winning 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils in Zero and Ransom, and a travel size Eyeshadow Primer Potion.

Inspired by the city, its diversity, and the fact that 8 million people each have their own story, Book of Shadows Vol. III is a tribute from the ultimate California beauty brand to the people and stories that make NYC the apple of our eye. The pop-up book-style palette is loaded with hand-illustrated depictions of the city that never sleeps. We give you glitz and glam alongside characters from all walks of life living amidst the LED-lit (yup…this palette lights up!) landmarks we all love.

Palette contains 16 eyeshadows:

  • Bordello Purpley-pink with gold shift
  • Kush Bright green
  • Loaded Deep emerald/black
  • Money Silvery pale green
  • Radium Bright blue

Oh man.. of course they have midnight cowboy rides again… -_- but either way I know I will definitely get this palette, can’t wait to see the new colors. :]

Kat Avatar

I know, right??? Everyone hates MCRA because the glitter, yet Urban Decay puts it in EVERYTHING. If I wanted glitter all over my face, I’d get it cheaper from the craft store! lol I’m with you though, still getting it. I’ve become addicted to these silly books.

baby in a corner Avatar

AAAHHH! I’m SO EXCITED! and I love that most of the shadows are new colours that I don’t have which is what i didn’t like about the Alice Palette! I was JUST going to buy a new zero too so if I get this I won’t! The last time I went into the shop 5 times to see if they were in stock and the sales ass probably thought i was stalking her! Hopefully it won’t be as hard to pick up this time!

Kathy Avatar

From what I see in this post, this looks like the best Book of Shadows so far! The colors seem to work well together in this one, in my opinion.

I have to tell myself that I can’t get this though. If I really want it, then I’ll be disappointed when I won’t be able to find it anywhere! lol!

Torie Avatar

Dang I just wished UD would slow down already! I can’t keep up with all these palettes money wise. I want them all! Unfortunately I can’t keep buying the same colors that I will never use all of just to get the new colors. But yet I want some of those new colors. UD is just too awesome for me I guess =)

Hilana Avatar

What a lovely palette this is.
I would use every colour here except maybe for the black. I have, sadly, despite many attempts never managed to master the smokey eye. 🙁

KatieM Avatar

Can’t wait for these to hit so Naked can be released from the public’s eye and then maybe I can get my hands on one. Otherwise I reserve judgment until after your swatches/review.

Kerri Avatar

I’m WAY more excited about this! Much better than the damn Naked pallete. Sadly I’ll have to wait until the holidays since I’m not in NYC.

Laci Avatar

I’m not too thrilled that it has Midnight Cowboy Rides Again… however, I’m still going to get it. 😀 Surprisingly, I only have 4 of the colors in singles/other palettes. Now to find someone who can go to NYC on the 28th to get this for me… LOL

Ashley Marie Avatar

I feel like once you’ve seen one of urban decays palettes you’ve seen them all. I’m kinda sick of urban decay though. I think its cuz my twitter is blowing up with tweeta about where to buy the naked palette. Haha

Bridgette Avatar

OMG!! I’ve been stalking the Internet for more info ! On this & when I saw UDs tweets yesterday I knew I’d find info today! Thanks Christine! *sigh* Those pesky repromotes! But at least there aren’t too many!

Nellie Avatar

Oh my goodness. FAR more amazing than the alice palette, the wait is going to be unbearable but Midnight Cowboy Rides Again….again? :\

Brittany Avatar

I STILL do not understand their fascination with their Midnight Cowboy Rides Again shadow! Other than that, can’t wait to get this baby!

Megan Avatar

Very nice…but I’m still trying to get the Naked palette. I love my Rockstar 24/7 eyeliner and would love the have the e/s but I don’t think thats enough to buy this palette! But once I see swatches I may change my mind:)

Brynn Avatar

WOW. I thought I loved the A in W palette but WOW I love this packaging.. I.. must… have..wow I’ll never buy a MAC shadow ever again with all of the UD palettes I’m amassing!

Ru Avatar

Well… thats my city and I think that’s totally a valid justification for me to buy this… unfortunatly I don’t live there anymore so I’ll miss the early promo 🙁

Vijaya Avatar

Thanks so much for the info. I’m SOOO at Times Square on the 28th.

Also, I really wish they’d stop putting Midnight Cowboy in all of these. It’s not that it’s a bad shade, it’s just… meh. I just don’t think it’s worthy of being in every Book of Shadows. That’s just my opinion, though.

HautePJ Avatar

Love the homage to NYC! That B-Girl looks fierce. I like that there is more variety in the colors (although I could have done without Smog AGAIN).

Miss Molly Avatar

I love what’s on the front of the palette, but I don’t care too much for the lights & pop-up. I’m content with my Naked palette.

Brandon Avatar

I have Vol.2 and Im sooooo glad that they didn’t use the same shades over again in this palette. I hope Loaded is as beautiful on the eyes as it is in that picture!

Kaylabella Avatar

Oh my gosh! It’s beautiful! And I only have four of the colors! This is definitely going to be mine! So glad that UD has stopped putting the same colors in every palette!

JayJay Avatar

This one looks good! A lot of LE shades! I do own most of the permanent shades though, so I’ll most likely pass, and try to find dupes for the couple of colours that I like (Radium and Kush).

Can’t wait to see it in person! I hope it doesn’t sell out as quickly as Alice In Wonderland did.

Joyce B Avatar

One of these days I’d like to see more new colors than permanent colors, but maybe they’re running out of inspiration. I only have 3 of these perm. shades so I think I’ll be getting this Book.

Suji Avatar

I loooooove Urban Decay! Have to get this. I have BOS II & the Alice BOS. Just got Naked. Even though UD does a lot of repromotes, I’m a sucker for cute packaging and limited edition items 🙂

Cheyenne Avatar

🙂 I don’t have any book of shadows, I hope this will be my first. I’ll be waiting for the exact release date! (Hopefully I get this job at Ulta, interview Sunday!)

Heather Avatar

PASS! The new colors aren’t that unique to me. I already have 2 of the book of shadows, plus other UD palettes. I always cringe when I see midnight cowboy rides again in a palette! When will they realize that shadow is nothing but a fall out mess of crap! Sorry!

Nikki Honablew Avatar

I am going to leave this one behind…LOVE the packaging but there are waayy to many permanent colors in this palette for me. If you already own a couple of Urban Decay palettes you most likely have majority of the colors….why does Urban Decay keep duplicating efforts with their palettes????

Melissa Avatar

A way to make more money for little effort. They know that some of us will just HAVE TO HAVE IT for the few new colors in it. That’s exactly what they’re banking on.

dolce aria Avatar

Holy CRAP I hate their BoS packaging! Still drooling, and will still buy it. I like that it’s including some of their newer offerings. Even with my UD collection and the other BoS, I think I only own…. four? colors in this palette?

Dumb question, but when is thier F&F sale, usually? I think it’s september or october, but I can’t recall!

chibicheeks Avatar

I have all the BoS and I don’t think I’ll be able to stay away from this one either. Why oh why do they keep getting more expensive every time?????????????? Damn you, UD!!!

Jen Avatar

wow. this palette looks amazing. but i will have to pass, considering all of MAC’s upcoming collections. i would love to get my hands on those 3 green shadows though, especially Loaded.

Melissa Avatar

I’m so sick and tired of them sticking Midnight Cowboy Rides Again in every single palette of theirs! It’s stupid! I’ll probably get this palette because I’m really loving the new colors but that MCRA really irks me.

LNU Avatar

Omgosh, I’m so getting this, I have a hard time resisting anything New York since I’m a born and raised New Yorker! And then the new eyeshadows also sucked me in!

LNU Avatar

Omg…the 28th is a Saturday and I work on Saturdays! I literally work 8 blocks away from that Sephora, but theres no way I can be there early to line up and get it, I work 10:30-6. 🙁
I’m gonna go during my lunch break, thats what I did to get my hands on In The Groove before it was released. I swear the things we do for beauty. =X

Parris Avatar

Oh I’m so excited for this one. The colors are so pretty and for once I don’t already have half the palette. I will definitely be there on Saturday. Hopefully is not too crazy and I get to snag one for myself.

Deb Avatar

My eyes were immediately drawn to Loaded -it’s beautiful! I’ve tried every time to get Book of Shadows and have never been able to, but this time, I have a good feeling!

Cheyenne Avatar

I have a question, since I’ve never had the chance to buy, do these sell out pretty fast? I never got the chance to buy the Alice in wonderland, so I’m assuming book of shadows are popular.

Mayra Avatar

OMG I cant wait for this…I totally missed out on the Alice BOS…and I am NOT going to miss out on this one! Im really happy that they included Psychedelic Sister and Haight!!! Now I only have to get the other 4 Sephora Exclusives!!! =D Totally excited ….do you have an approximate date of when it will come out …I know you said for the Holiday season but is that usually like October maybe???

Tiffany Avatar

The palette is adorable but i really wish they didn’t have
-Midnight cowboy rides again

I think i have at least 2 of each from previous palettes =S

roberta Avatar

awwww I love it! Any idéa if this palette will be available in uk? I went To thé counter To ask for thé naked palette, they didn’t évén know what I was talking about! Urban decay is crap in uk, wé get few things and they don’t advertise it at all.

Babycakes Avatar

Thank you Urban Decay for not including Baked and Half Baked.

I’m probably the only one who doesn’t have Midnight Cowboy Rides Again. So, I’m happy it’s in here. 🙂

Maggie Avatar

Oh, man, I’m definitely getting this one 🙂 I only have five of the shadows in it. Hurray for new shades! And I was just debating getting Haight and Psychedelic Sister, so I’m glad to know I don’t need to. And hurray for a larger-sized Ransom! I’ve been skimping on using my extra-mini version because I’m afraid it’ll run out.

Although, why on earth they’re using Last Call, Maui Wowie and the dreaded Midnight Cowboy Rides Again when they just used them in the Alice palette, I have no idea 😛

Jessica Allison Avatar

so am I reading this right- there’s only 4 shades with large, chunky, migrating-all-over-the-place glitter? Hmm…in that case, this one may be coming home with me. Need to cross reference my other UD palettes!

DarkGlamour17 Avatar

idk if i want it. If it was $40 but I’m not sure about $54….i really really really love Radium though (the bright blue on the bottom row)

Lola Avatar

I have only bought one UD palette before (Get Baked, nothing too special) and have resisted the urge to buy many others, but I am in love with this! I’m a NYC girl and I’m looving the colors here! If it’s coming out for the holiday season, this will surely be on my wish list 😀

nicci Avatar

Naked was my first UD palette and I have only used it once, not sure if that is good or bad? I like some of the colors in this one but not sure about the bright colors…they are pretty but I always gravitate towards neutrals. I love the design though!

Lizz M. Avatar

NIce, looks like UD is stepping up the game with the palettes lately, including new shades and different textures. Good stuff. But I’m really disappointed Loaded won’t be released as a single shadow, I just saw your swatches and it’s sooooo beautiful. Do you know of anything similar from other brands, Christine?

Lizz M. Avatar

Thanks, this will be like my new “on the hunt for” kind of product. Scouring pigments and swatching like mad. This color is just too pretty.

Katie Avatar

I have to get this palette, especially since I was born and raised in NYC! 😀 I wish I could get one of the first 1000, but I’m broke from my hauling in July, especially since the Naked palette just came out. 🙁 Glad I’ll have another chance in fall/winter tho!

Mara Avatar

Though I already have the BOS II, Deluxe Shadow Box and Naked palettes from UD, I’m tempted to get this because the colors seem to be on the darker side and would look good on my NC 30/35 skin tone. I just wish UD would quit the impractical and bulky packaging of the BOS palettes; they’re cute but such a pain to use, store and/or travel with.

Mara Avatar

Side note: if all you have are those three UD palettes, the only duplicate colors in the BOS III are Midnight Cowboy Rides Again, Smog and Perversion, so getting this new palette might be worth it.

LNU Avatar

I’m confused, will the palettes be sold right when the store opens at 10am?

Or will the palettes be sold at 1pm when the UD team arrives?

Rosie Avatar

I love it! I came to check the price because I’m wiring the money to my sister since I made her promise on Sunday (last night in NYC I had) to go to Times Square and buy it for me and mail it out!

jhene04 Avatar

i can’t wait for this! i wish they would make another midnight cowboy rides again shadow MINUS THE GLITTER!! it’s such a pretty color, but the glitter is so annoying 🙁

R Avatar

how long will this palette be availiable for? also does anyone know if it has already come out in the uk because i have seen it on the debenhams website but im not sure if it is out or not.

Jackie Avatar

for someone who already owns bos 2, which one would you think has more unique / better shades and is more worth getting, the aiw palette or this one? i currently have 2 and the aiw but i’m thinking i could swap it for bos3 or just waste another 50 and have all three, lol

Christine Avatar

I really like the BoS (including AiW) palettes in general, even if I don’t always love all the colors, because they’re a good deal. They just are. If you’re a UD fan or love colors, they’re always worth it. I don’t think I’d swap away AiW, if only since it’s well worth more than the BoS. But with the AiW palette, I believe all of the shades are permanently available, so…. but yeah!

Dinitchka Avatar

I just got my BOS III today and the drawer comes totally out on it. I’m not sure if it’s bad glue, no glue or designed that way???
