Tom Ford Sous Le Sable Eye Color Quad Review & Swatches
Sous Le Sable
Tom Ford Beauty Sous Le Sable Eye Color Quad ($88.00 for 0.35 oz.) is a new, lighter-leaning neutral quad that veered a bit rosier overall. Three of the four shades were matte, while one was a softer shimmer, especially applied and blended out. For someone who prefers a sheer wash of color, perhaps this would work for that purpose, but for someone who wants it to perform well for a myriad of looks and uses, it’ll under-perform. It’s definitely one of the weaker quads released in awhile; despite the very silky feel of the eyeshadows, they were prone to sheering out and fading faster than average.

Sous Le Sable #1
Sous Le Sable #1 is a medium, rosy beige with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good coverage (though it might be hard to tell given how close it appeared to my skin color) in a single pass, but it was soft enough that it sheered out too quickly, which resulted in more semi-sheer coverage in practice (which didn’t build up). It lasted for six and a half hours before it seemed noticeably faded.

Sous Le Sable #2
Sous Le Sable #2 is a light copper with moderate, warm undertones and a soft, frosted finish. The texture was soft and finely-milled, but it was on the thinner side, so it tended to look a little washed out and the shimmer receded into the background once blended, so it appeared more pearly in finish in practice. It had good pigmentation that stayed on well for seven and a half hours before fading visibly.

Sous Le Sable #3
Sous Le Sable #3 is a very light, rosy brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had medium coverage that was buildable to semi-opaque pigmentation. The texture was incredibly soft and finely-milled to the touch, but it was more prone to sheering out and diffusing so readily that it was hard to maintain the color. It wore well for seven hours before fading a bit.

Sous Le Sable #4
Sous Le Sable #4 is a medium brown with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had good pigmentation in a single layer, which was buildable to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top. The texture was soft, smooth, and finely-milled without being too thin, so this shade didn’t sheer out like the others in the quad. It lasted nicely for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably.

This is definitely not my jam. It not only underperforms, but looks very muddy in the eye look, as the 2 darker mattes just don’t have enough contrast. TF dropped the ball here.
This is definitely an underwhelming quad from TF. All the shades are fairly average in quality and easily duped by better performing and much less expensive options.
A lovely eye look Christine.
Two words come to mind for me – “ho” and “hum” (or maybe “rip” and “off”).
I was looking forward to this one of the new set the most. It’s such a beautiful-looking quad of pinky browns.
Maybe I’ll play with it at Bergdorff’s and see how it swatches and what the thought behind it is.
Maybe primer will help..
Too bad. Such a pretty palette with a poor performance considering the price point.
Hey, I don’t wanna sound like ‘that’ person, but I think it’s “Sous le sable” (= under the sand) and not “la”, because “sable” is masculine in French. Clearly I don’t blame you, I only did this to help ; French can be a pain and it’s easy to confuse these two 🙂
If the mistake comes from Tom Ford, I’m sorry for the false alarm, although I think it would be a bit embarrassing on their end, not to research properly before releasing a product name. Then again it doesn’t look like it’s gonna be a staple, judging by your grades, ouch ! I hoped they would do better.
Sorry, I’m just the moron who can’t read the label on the back of the quad. I will have everything udpated but it may take a moment for everything to refresh without erroring since it requires URL changes.
Oh no, don’t say that 🙁 It happens all the time, especially with foreign languages ! I hope I didn’t make you feel bad or anything, it’s always hard to point out a typo or a mistake without feeling rude, and that was not my intention at all.
It’s a reading comprehension failure on my part, nothing to do with foreign language – literally read it wrong!! I’m sorry again! I appreciate you pointing out – that’s no problem! I’m just so sorry you had to spend even half of a second doing so.
I love the color story for a fast and easy eye. However, these shades should have been very easy to get right. TF must be relying on its name factor, because every company does neutrals like this, and most of them do it better and cheaper.
