Tom Ford Rory, Diego, Alejandro, Luciano, Leonardo Lip Colors
Tom Ford Lips & Boys Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is segmented into color families, and this post features the “reds.” Rory was a total miss (and not at all a red!), while the other four were more promising. I was surprised that none of the reds was truly full coverage!
Presently, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Saks are both accepting pre-orders for the Lips & Boys collection; they officially release on December 26th (and will also be at other retailers and Tom Ford’s website at that time). Nordstrom also put up various trios (no savings, they’re $96 each) for pre-order. Neiman Marcus has a gift card event thorugh 12/16 that includes the Lips & Boys.
The Lips & Boys shades seem a lot smaller than the full-sized Lip Colors in their tubes, but in terms of actual product, it’s 0.07 oz. vs. 0.10 oz. These are actually cheaper by the ounce at $457.14/oz. compared to $500/oz. for full-size. I liked that the packaging felt the same as full-sized, just smaller, but it didn’t feel cheapened. The bullet of lipstick itself was also wide enough at the base that it didn’t feel really skinny or difficult to use, and it wasn’t prone at breaking at the base as some miniature-sized lipsticks are.
Rory Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a heavily gold-shimmered peach with a metallic finish. The underlying base color is more of a light, peachy-nude, but there is a lot of gold shimmer in it, which takes center stage. This one applied poorly, as it tended to bunch up on itself and looked chunky–instead of lips looking smoother, they looked rough. It had semi-opaque color payoff, but it’s something that is probably better mixed or layered with another lip product. It lasted for three hours on me and was lightly drying. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Diego Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a brightened, coral-red with warm, orange undertones and a luminous sheen. It had mostly opaque pigmentation, but there’s a veil of translucency apparent that will let the natural lip color come through slightly. The consistency had some slip, but it didn’t feather or bleed on me over the six hours it lasted. I found the formula on this shade to be a bit hydrating. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Alejandro Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a medium-dark, fuchsia-red with cool, blue undertones and a very fine shimmer. It had semi-opaque color coverage, which went on evenly and looked smooth on the lips, but the natural lip color will come through. It lasted for six hours and was hydrating while worn. Alejandro is the same as Slander. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Luciano Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a brightened, medium red with cool, blue undertones and a luminous finish. It had mostly opaque pigmentation with slight translucency. The consistency was lightweight, creamy, and easy to apply. On me, it wore well for five and a half hours and was lightly hydrating over time. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Leonardo Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a medium-dark, cool-toned red with very fine ruby shimmer. It had semi-opaque color payoff that went on smoothly and evenly, but it definitely wasn’t a full coverage lipstick. The consistency was thinner with more slip compared to some shades in the Lip Color family (particularly permanent shades). This shade wore well for almost five hours on me and was hydrating while worn. Leonardo is also the same shade as Smoke Red. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Rory looks like a dud, might have to mix it with a lipgloss to make it work, but at this price point, you shouldn’t have to. But all of the others look great on you!
Thank you, Katherine!
They’re up again on Nordstrom’s website. I ordered some an hour ago. I had Leonardo in my cart but took it out at the last minute. After seeing that swatch, I might go back and get it. lol
Ooh, nice! Thank you for letting me know, Reese!
They’re available individually on Nordstrom.com this morning!
Yay!!
yayyy thanks for telling! I signed up instock notification at TF site and they send me email about it today but of course it wasn’t stock lol someone did the email blast way too early
It’s nice to hear that as far as packaging and utility go – they TF did a good job replicating the originals. I’m still considering one of the trios even though there are no savings involved. 🙂
Which trio do you have your eye on most?
I’m surprised Leonardo pulled cool on you because (to me) the bullet looks very golden. I guess it is because of the slight sheerness. Still looks lovely though!
I was surprised as well!
I got Diego and it arrived today! I might actually wear it for Christmas Eve. Love it on you!
Thank you, Sunny! Enjoy Diego!
The last three are amazing!
They are nice!
Do you think these were worth it or more of a gimmick?
Some shades are nice, some shades aren’t. Ones that are As, to me, would be worth considering if it’s the type of shade or type of formula one likes. I don’t think the concept is really a gimmick (in that they don’t deliver and are just buzz), but inevitably, there is a lot of variety in finish/color payoff that make a departure from the regular range but there’s little insight on any marketing or TF’s website to expect such and such shades as the “sheer” ones or the “layering” ones, you know?
i have gotten WAY to many of these. i caved at nordstrom yesterday and bought 3 more (i think that makes 12). I was only going to get 4 total! WHOOPS!!
lol! 🙂 Which three did you get yesterday?
honestly, i can’t even remember! i think i got guillermo and alashdair, but i forget the other…maybe cary? i keep getting the names mixed up! 50 names are just too hard to remember!!! i somehow ended up with two xaviers. maybe i’ve just done too much shopping!
i hope you enjoy your Christmas and have a wonderful holiday!
btw, have you made any progress on the move. it is beautiful in phoenix right now. i finally understand why people want to live here.
It’s hard to keep track of these shades! They all get mixed up in my head, too. 🙂
Phoenix’s weather does seem lovely right now! Probably February-March next year is the next step!
Such gorgeous reds! Rory would look beautiful over the top of any of them.
I could see that!
Besides the first one, I like these!
Such gorgeous colors! Luciano is my favorite out of this bunch!
Love Leonardo – very pretty colour. Looks great on you Christine.
Diego is gorgeous! Definitely my favorite of the bunch
This collection has so many beautiful colours! I wouldn’t know where to begin. I think I might just have to think happy thoughts and close my eyes when walking past the counter just in case they are there. Sitting there, taunting me, daring me to buy them! I don’t think I could just buy the one. Once you start it may be difficult to stop, despite the high price tag. I’ll need to give these a miss I think in order to keep my sanity and, ultimately, my money in my back account where it belongs! 😀
Diego is such a stunner but I can ignore the other beautiful lipsticks here… All of them looks super prettyy!! <3
Though Rory might work as a top coat on a matte finish but at this price .. its better be missed! 🙂
I must own Alejandro! Happy holidays Christine!:)
I think Diego is my favourite of the bunch. I’m looking into an orangey red for my collection, so this one fits the bill! Let’s see if they bring those to my Tom Ford counter, and I’ll take a close look at them. 🙂
