Tom Ford Lips & Boys Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is segmented into color families, and this post features the “nudes to browns.” I liked Beau, Henry, and Gustavo, but the other two shades were misses for me, unfortunately!

Presently, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Saks are both accepting pre-orders for the Lips & Boys collection; they officially release on December 26th (and will also be at other retailers and Tom Ford’s website at that time). Nordstrom also put up various trios (no savings, they’re $96 each) for pre-order. Neiman Marcus has a gift card event thorugh 12/16 that includes the Lips & Boys.

The Lips & Boys shades seem a lot smaller than the full-sized Lip Colors in their tubes, but in terms of actual product, it’s 0.07 oz. vs. 0.10 oz. These are actually cheaper by the ounce at $457.14/oz. compared to $500/oz. for full-size. I liked that the packaging felt the same as full-sized, just smaller, but it didn’t feel cheapened. The bullet of lipstick itself was also wide enough at the base that it didn’t feel really skinny or difficult to use, and it wasn’t prone at breaking at the base as some miniature-sized lipsticks are.

Holden Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a light golden beige with warmer gold shimmer that gives it a more frosted finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, but it applied unevenly and tended to settle into lip lines over time. This didn’t feel as smooth on the lips as other shades in the range. I found it a little drying over the three hours it lasted on me. For reference, this is the same as Vanilla Suede. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Beau Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a pinky-peach beige with subtle, warmer undertones and a satin finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage that went on evenly (which is more impressive, given the creaminess and lightness of this particular shade). On me, the color wore well for four hours and was hydrating over time. For reference, this is the same shade as Blush Nude. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Henry Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark orange-brown with lighter gold micro-shimmer. It had rich color payoff that covered the lips with smooth, even color while being easy to apply. It was hydrating over the five hours it wore on me. For reference, this is the same shade as Warm Sable. The finer shimmer in this made it harder to dupe. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Gustavo Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark brown with warm, yellow undertones and a smattering of fine, plummy-red shimmer. It had mostly opaque pigmentation, though you could see a smidgen of my lip freckle peeking through. It had a creamy, slightly more emollient consistency compared to the average shade in this formula, that glided on easily. This shade wore well for five hours and was lightly hydrating. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Pavlos Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a darkened burgundy red with subtle, warm undertones and very fine ruby red shimmer. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a very high slip consistency, which made it difficult to apply with any precision. Most lipsticks will be crisper when applied with a lip brush, but this one absolutely needs a lip brush. The color settled into lip lines after about an hour and a half of wear and progressively worsened over the next four hours. It was lightly hydrating, but it was very high-maintenance to wear as it feathered slightly after three hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

The only color I like in this bunch is Pavlos, but too bad about the formula and application. Good thing I already have one of the dupes – MAC Hearts Aflame

Hi Christine! I almost always agree with your reviews, but I had a completely different experience with Pavlos. It went on evenly for me and does not settle into my lip lines. Mine also seems quite a bit browner where yours seems redder and a bit stiffer- not slippery. I found I did like Pavlos best when I patted it on my lips and layered up til it was where I liked it intensity-wise. I wonder if they are from different batches?

I’m not an orange lipstick girl, but I admit that Henry is very, very beautiful!
And BEAU is definitely one of the most gorgeous shades I have seen so far. Will get it right now.

None of these are really my colour, but that aside, I really like the uniqueness of Henry (*looks at dupes* LOL, perhaps unique *outside* the TF L&B set, anyway) and Gustavo.

Pavlos looks like it does that thing where it won’t stick to the inner portion of your lips, and I cannot stand that in a lipstick! 😛 The colour is nice though.

Honestly, I’ve found most of these pretty disappointing… The finish on most of them looks kind of odd to me, like a dull frost. And none of the colors except for Stavros have really stood out to me… I’ll stick with my UD Revolution lipsticks.

Hi,

Loving your TF lips & boys reviews!

I’m surprised you rate Holden so low as this is repromote of Vanilla Suede (which I have) & is such a popular colour that it was brought back from being discontinued to being part of permanent line again. It’s gorgeous with a smokey eye & the semi sheer coverage with shimmer is the only way such a pale shade could work without giving the dreaded ‘walking dead’ look. It’s also great layered over other shade…I think it looks great on you! Also, whilst I’m sure the dupes you give are appreciated, I don’t think quality & texture wise Mac for example could ever compare with a Rouge G or Tom Ford so why dupe?

Christine Avatar

Unfortunately for me, Holden made my lips look and feel worse! I’m glad you enjoy yours!

Dupes are about color and finish, not quality or price, and it’s important to respect that not everyone can afford or wants to spend $50 on a lipstick. There are a lot of fantastic formulas from $1 to $75, so there’s something for everyone 🙂 I personally disagree that MAC can’t compare with Tom Ford or Guerlain Rouge G, based on my experiences across all three ranges, that all three brands can do great lipsticks as well as disappointing ones.

Glad you love this reply. What a constructive comment ?!!
My point is simply that whilst a colour may seem similar, it’s actually the texture, finish, lasting power & formula that go into making a particular shade what it is so in my opinion offering ‘dupes’ of this & that diminishes the value of the product in question. I look at a Tom Ford lipstick review because I’m interested in that brand’s lipstick & skip the dupes section (I’m sure I’m not the only one that does this!). Similarly, if I want to look at a Mac lipstick review or a Revlon lipstick review then that’s what I’m interested in as opposed to ‘similar’ colours from other brands. Of course there is great make up across all ranges regardless of price & certain brands do specific things extremely well (eg. for me Mac eyeliners reign supreme) but in terms of quality, I do believe that Tom Ford & Rouge G lipsticks are amongst the best & include certain ingredients that ensure a superior formulation & whilst the very high price point of course encompasses reputation & packaging, it also reflects quality material.

Thank you for saying this, Christine! The dupes & comparison options that you provide are extremely (!!!) valuable for reasons you provided above. I have no desire to purchase Tom Ford makeup at that price point, but appreciate information on what gives similar effect on lips for shades such as Peter. Not to mention, I actually prefer MAC’s lipsticks to my rarely used, yet still lovely, Guerlains.

I LOVE how Henry and Gustavo look on you! They really work with your skin tone and bring out your green eyes I think. I don’t think they’d do much for me, personally (I have a lighter skin tone and dark brown eyes – booooring! lol) …but I’d like to try them out! Hm… Thanks Christine! These have been fun to look at and I really want Liam, Guillermo and Stavros after reading all the posts from the last month. They’re beautiful and “different”. Don’t know if I’ll end up with them, but I’d love em! 😉

loving Henry on you, loving the fact that I’ve ordered this..I never wear brown, neither Brown dress nor brown shoes not q brown lipstick_I absolutely don’t own anything brown..so I really went out of my comfort zone when I ordered this on a whim, but now I’m so glad I did, looks stunning on you!
