Tom Ford Frolic Lip Shine Color Review, Photos, Swatches
Tom Ford Frolic Lip Shine Color
Tom Ford Frolic Lip Shine Color ($48.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a soft coral with a subtle frost finish. Clinique Curviest Caramel is more beige and opaque. Chanel Pimpante is a touch brighter. Cle de Peau Comtesse de Cayla is slightly darker and less warm-toned. MAC Razzledazzler is a touch pinker. Guerlain Jicky is redder.
The formula has a creamy, slightly wet-like consistency (and it feels much like a creamy lip balm). It glides over lips easily–no skipping or tugging–but seems to hang on better than other tinted lip balms I’ve tried. It feels more like a lipstick with extra boost of hydration than a true tinted lip balm. I tested this particular shade over eighteen hours, which involved four re-applications. Though creamy and slick, it is lightweight and has a thinner feel once applied (give it about ten to fifteen minutes). It starts off glossy, but the glossiness disappears after an hour or so. The color remains, and it’s buildable from sheer to semi-opaque color coverage. Like the best kind of sheer, it is an even layer of sheer color that has some translucency, so the natural lip color shines through.
I was impressed by the wear, because a lot of these lipstick/lip balm hybrids have a tendency to slip away within a couple of hours, but it consistently wore for a solid four hours. But over time, these feel more like a sheer lipstick than they do traditional lip balm, so I expect that’s part of it. It was nicely hydrating, and I needed no lip balm to supplement the wear, and after wearing it all day, my lips were in tip-top shape. I think whether these are “worth it” is (which is always true to some degree) going to come down to your personal preference. Personally, I would recommend splashing out for Tom Ford’s Blush over the lipstick, if you were curious to try a single product.
At least the product amount is 0.12 oz., which is the size of most lipsticks, and sometimes with the more balm-like formulas, they give you a bit less. With a product like this, more is infinitely better, because the creamier, slicker, more balm-like consistency means it’s easy to over-apply. The Lip Colour Shines come in brown lacquered, square tubes with gold detailing, and they have a sweet, vanilla scent (not too cloying; very similar to MAC’s).

Love love the Lip Color Shines! They are so nourishing. Thx for the review
Thanks so much for letting me know it is nourishing! I have constant dry lips that flake and peel so I can wear nothing but balm so now I am going to check these out. It would be nice to be able to wear lipstick.
Me too! I live in Colorado where it’s soooo dry, and I bought a couple of these TF lip shines and I LOVE THEM. They feel so nourishing. Ah, had to share the love 🙂
It looks nice, but definitely not worth $48.
Yep, looks easily dupeable for way less money.
48 dollars for something that barely gives you any tint. No thanks. If i spend that much on a lipstick, it has to be something amazing!
you took the words right out of my mouth!
OOH Pretty! I am so going to buy the blush you are wearing! Now I just need to convince myself that I *do not* need to spend $50 after tax on one lipstick…but it was hydrating so I might need it! LOL BTW it makes sense to me that it would smell similar to MAC as Estee Lauder is the parent company to both MAC and Tom Ford.
A really beautiful natural looking shade… and the formula sounds amazing 🙂
It’s very pretty, but I would never pay 48 dollars for it.
Gorgeous!
This reminds me of the Bobbi Brown Treatment Lip Shines, especially the Peach Sorbet. Would you say the formulas are similar at all?
Bobbi Brown’s is wetter, slicker, and stays that way for longer, I would say! Similar, for sure. I was comparing and looking at overlap between this and one of BB’s shades but didn’t feel like either of the two I was considering quite hit the mark.
For the price difference I’ll stick with BB 🙂 Plus I think the formula sounds more up my alley. Thank you!
So pretty, but I think if I am looking for another tinted balm/sheer lippie to add to my collection, I will look at Dior or Giorgio Armani or, my favorite, Burberry (though I’m not sure they have a coral-y color like this :/). These formulas are my favorite but TF’s is just way too pricey, in my opinion.
It is pretty, but not $50 pretty! However, the formula does sound amazing and I would be interested to see reviews on other shades in the range- maybe they would be more worth my while.
You are fabulously gorgeous and this color is to die for on you. It shows off your beauty perfectly.
Thanks, Mimi!
This is very pretty. I wish it was more pigmented though. It has a very high price for a lip product, as much as a Rouge G I think…I would probably prefer something more pigmented for the price, but this is still very cute and it looks nice. 🙂
I just received this lipstick in frolic last week, and I have been wearing it for the last few days. It’s definitely hydrating, and feels great on the lips. However, I can barely tell I have any lipstick on, and this is right after application. After an hour, the “shine” or “frost” effect is pretty much completely gone. Really not much different than wearing my favorite Sugar tinted lip treatments, which is cheaper and even more moisturizing. I will mention that I have naturally pigmented lips (almost identical to frolic in color), so the color just didn’t do anything for me. What a disappointment as I am the biggest Tom Ford lipstick fan.
I love the color, but in Spain the price is above 60 € 🙁
This one kind of reminds me of Chanel’s Coco Rouge Shine in Chance. I’ve heard that one is getting discontinued, have you heard anything about that? If so, how do you think this compares? I love Chance and if it does get discontinued I need a replacement. Thanks!
Hi Jacqui!
Unfortunately, I don’t think I have that shade to compare – I looked through my past reviews and could not find it!
