Tom Ford Erotic Patent Finish Lip Color
Tom Ford Patent Finish Lip Color ($52.00 for 0.07 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a “lip stain with an ultra-glossy finish” that has “intense, vibrant color” and “long-lasting high shine.” There are eight shades in total; I bought three and was sent five, so I will have all eight shades reviewed shortly, while these were the first two I’ve finished testing. It’s a click-style product with a flocked, slanted applicator where the liquid color flows from. I’m not particularly fond of the applicator, though it is not rough or hard to use, but the flocking makes it harder to get really precise, clean edges (sometimes I feel like it gives a more jagged edge).
The formula feels lightweight, almost watery, when initially applied but thickens and feels more like a moderately tacky gel after thirty to forty seconds. It has great staying power with the glossiness lasting for six hours and the color itself still going strong eight to ten hours later (after two meals and coffee)–by the end of the day, it has more of a natural sheen to it (like a lip stain) but looked even. It does stain as well. I would forget that I was wearing it, which is a testament to how comfortable and hydrating it is for all-day wear. The coverage is nearly opaque but has that slight translucency that you would expect to see in a lip stain. I didn’t experience feathering or bleeding on these two shades. It has a strong, vanilla cake scent–not your typical vanilla but something sweeter–and noticeably stronger than other Tom Ford lip products. The formula reminds me of products like YSL Glossy Stains, Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer but with a slightly thicker consistency. The color range is more limited with all the shades being brighter, medium-to-dark in color, and between warm red and cool pink.
Tom Ford Erotic Patent Finish Lip Color ($52.00 for 0.07 fl. oz.) is a medium, fuchsia red with cool, blue undertones and a glossy finish. It had good color coverage with light translucency that you would see with a lip stain. The color goes on easily and evenly and sits well on the lips. The color was still going strong after ten hours of wear, though the glossiness lasted for around six hours. The formula was comfortable to wear and moisturizing over time. Anastasia Weekend Barbie (-, $16.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Infamy (P, $54.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Erotic (P, $54.00) is more pigmented (95% similar). MAC Soft Dream (LE, $21.00) is more muted (90% similar). ColourPop Dream Castle (LE, $10.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Big Bang (DC, $26.00) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). Chanel Amuse Bouche (P, $30.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Trinkets (LE, $10.00) is warmer (90% similar). Tom Ford Infamy Patent Finish Lip Color ($52.00 for 0.07 fl. oz.) vibrant, medium-rask fuchsia pink with cool undertones and a high-shine, glossy finish and very subtle fuchsia micro-shimmer. It had very nearly opaque coverage that applied evenly and smoothly, but there was a slight translucency that gave it the appearance of a lip stain. The shine wore long at six hours, while the color itself lasted well for ten hours (when I removed it) — and it was still quite apparent and rich at that point with a more natural sheen than a high-gloss finish. It was hydrating while worn. Tom Ford Beauty Erotic (P, $54.00) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). Revlon Adorned (DC, $7.49) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (90% similar). MAC Soft Dream (LE, $21.00) is more muted (90% similar). Revlon HD Pink Ruby (515) (DC, $8.99) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (90% similar). Does the applicator really release product in the shape of a paw print? Or was that just a coincidence?
Just a coincidence! They come through circular holes, but once the product is dispensed the first time and used, the whole applicator turns the color of the gloss.
I thought that was just too cute myself as well. 😉 lol
Love this question?
While I would never wear lip colors this bright, I think it’s adorable that the picture of the applicator for Erotic looks like a dog paw. 😉
Haha, it’s cute. Better looking than some of the just-dispensed shots!
They are gorgeous colours and my jaw dropped at the long wear time! I’ve never got a product to last that long on my lips, they eat lipstick! It would definitely be worth the money, but why bring out 2 very similar shades at the same time?! I won’t be buying, they’re too expensive for me, would opt for a cheaper dupe. I’d be delighted if someone bought one for me though!
They’re all really similar (that is why I tested these two first, since they were even quite similar to each other).
It’s hideously expensive, and I don’t like the applicator, but the color and formula sound awesome. Is it my imagination, or do both colors look kind of similar to each other?
Yes, they are similar to each other.
Hourglass had a tip just like this with their Aura lip stains! I’m not remembering if it was twist or click up but this isn’t new. I do love that they both take on a Plum Lush color! That’s my favorite go to lipstick got a MLBB! Now it has a glossy sexy sister! Thank you very much for your thorough review! I’ve been wondering what you thought of these! I may pick up one! ?
The packaging is definitely something we have seen before!
Thank you! How can TF say they patented it? I thought I was going crazy!
Are you referring to the name “Patent Finish”? It’s describing the product/finish – like patent leather, high-shine 🙂
LOL! ? I understand that. It is the pen itself that has the unique patent for TF. It’s not new..
Infamy looks like a very intense shade of watermelon.
They all have a very bold, juicy look to them, even if they tended to run together!
These look good and the wear longevity is the impressive part imo, but I’m not really game at this price point. I typically only wear glossy pale nude lips so… yeah. I’ll save paying stupid for something else which is a better fit for me.
Every time I’ve worn one, I’m like “OH, yeah, this is STILL on?” The first time I wore the formula, I frequently forgot I was wearing it, and I had noted after six hours that it was going strong. I continued about my life, and realized at bed time when I went to remove everything that it was STILL vibrant.
Wow and it’s hydrating! Almost makes it worth the price tag. Very pretty. I’m tempted, lol.
I totally thought this was a cat-themed collection from the first image of the applicator! Haha!
Haha!
Ugh, I hate clicky-pen applicators! They’re so messy, and they never dispense enough product until you give it one more click and it gushes out everywhere!
LOL! Yes, this is true. It can take a little precision to figure out the right amount. Or patience, ha.
So,do you love these? Do you think these are the big release of 2016 like they are saying?
The formula is great, and there is NO taste to the formula, which is something that can be hit or miss on ones like this (like YSL), but the click-pen system is not my favorite. I wouldn’t buy a lot. I would buy one and use it up before acquiring another!
Dang, these sure are bright and super pretty! $52 is hard to swallow though.
I hear you! It is expensive.
Although the shade range is limited, it’s limited to colours I really like, and since the Glossy Stains and Ecstasy lacquers are among my favourite lip products, this could get expensive for me…
Hopefully they’ll branch out the color range like the Glossy Stains (though the medium-to-dark shades do tend to be better).
Oh no, these are just what I’m looking for. Bright colors, glossy finish, hydrating, long-wearing, comfortable. Just, damn, $52.
Try YSL Glossy Stains for something less pricey (but not cheap, lol) 🙂
Pretty, but so similar I initially thought the lip pictures were accidentally duplicated! Odd to have 2 colors that are so similar in such a limited range!
All eight colors are pretty similar – warmer/cooler, a little lighter/darker but significantly different.
Same here! The colors are so similar that I thought Christine accidentally posted the same face pic twice LOL
These are really pretty. Looking forward to seeing the other colors.
Yay!
Beautiful shades! They remind me of UD GS Firebird, which I almost bought Tuesday night! I probably still will, but I literally had to run out of Sephora on Tuesday to get the last Downtown Trolley! ?
Hope you can get it next time 🙂
These are gorgeous, but look so similar — maybe the only difference is shimmer/no shimmer? I would really like to try one of these, may wait until you review all the shades before deciding which one!
Tone and brightness, but they are definitely similar.
Gorgeous! Now to decide on a shade.
That’ll be tough!
Those lips sure do look juicy Miss Lady! 😉
They are ultra-shiny!!
Your eyes are killer gorgeous!! I may have ‘visit’ the TF Disco Dust quad….
I may have TO visit (i really should proof-read before sending…)
Thank you, Helen!
Wow, those are gorgeous and bright! Too much for my budget, but I have dupes.
These are definitely a splurge item!
Like everyone else, I totally wanted these bc of the paw print! Ok, so now that I got over the “awwwwwwww” factor, I do love the shades, although they are similar. Still, it’s a bit to drop on this kind of product. I think I’m going to pass and try out the new Milk Makeup Oil Lip Stain instead.
Hopefully the new Lip Stain you try will be good!
Ordered the Milk Lip Stain in Vibes which is a similar hot pink. I should have it Monday or Tuesday of next week. I’ll update then 🙂
I ordered Infamy and a couple of shadows/palette from the TF website and actually receiving the order is proving to be frustrating as they require a signature for home delivery. By contacting customer service, I can have my delivery held at the Fed Ex location, but actually getting in touch with the customer service is also difficult!!
I missed my order delivery once. Hopefully not again tomorrow!!
I hope you can get yours today, Pamyla!
I got it! Looks a lot like my Kingston. And you are right about the new shadow releases They contain much less product now! Much less than my golden peach duo too!
I’m surprised these didn’t come in a brush pen format. Both shades are divine and I totally want them. I own Pink Ruby but these are more sophisticated. That reminds me I need to UD GS Firebird before it sells out.
Grab Firebird for sure!
I always thought UD Big Bang was as bright as possible but it is muted compared to these two colors!
lol!
My wallet sincerely thanks Mr. Tom Ford for not releasing a nude or coral.
These look even better than my favorite ysl glossy stains! But I hardly ever wear bright reds or pinks so I guess I’ll be holding out for more shade releases. 🙂
They seem to have a little more plushness, or shine maybe, than the Glossy Stains. Definitely similar type of formula, though!
Something about Tom Ford as a company just skeezes me out. I can’t quite articulate it, but just… no. It’s not just that their ads can be misogynistic (though that’s part of it), it’s not just that I find the products overpriced (though they are), and it’s not just that I don’t really like the fashion sensibilities of the other branches of the Tom Ford empire (though that’s also true)… just… somehow I find myself going, “Nope. Not supporting that company.”
But DANG, if these don’t look great on you! Just the shot of shiny color that actually makes me smile in late winter. I literally looked at your headshots here and grinned. 🙂
Makeup is fun. I’m glad I get to experience even more of it vicariously through your research. Thanks!
Maybe try YSL Glossy Stains or Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer 🙂 They are similar enough that they could be worth trying if you enjoy the high-gloss lip stain kind of thing!
You know, I didn’t really like YSL Glossy Stains when I tried them, but I think maybe I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind.
And I’ve not tried the Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer, but maybe I should!
I do like my Dior Fluid Sticks. Maybe it’s time to bust those out, again.
Well, the upside, if you didn’t like the Glossy Stains, then perhaps you would not like this one and all would be well 😉 Dior Fluid Sticks are a good alternative!
The only issue I have with the YSL/Giorgio Armani formulas is sometimes the scent is too strong. That’s probably the advantage of TF for me, the vanilla scent, which is personally more tolerable to my nose!
These are so vibrant and beautiful! They almost look squishy and jelly-like on the lips, really pretty… not sure I would reach for these enough to warrant the price tag, but they sure look gorgeous on you Christine!
They have a gel-like texture!
$52 for a click pen? I just can’t. Worst type of packaging ever.
I so agree, Quinctia. It’s the one of the big reasons I find myself reluctant to recommend, even if the formula is really awesome.
Very cool packaging! I love the colors!
The colors are vibrant!
Oh my god, I think I’m in love! So so so gorgeous! My only concern is that they’re by Tom Ford and are therefore very expensive…
…but while writing this I’ve remembered that for my birthday I’m getting a gift voucher for the department store near me that has a Tom Ford counter. It would pay for over half the cost of one of these. Now I just need to pick one! I haven’t been this excited about a makeup product in ages!!! ?
They are very expensive for sure! I hope you love it, Gillian 🙂
IT’S A DOGGIE PAW!!! 🙂
It is kind of funny how some see a kitten paw and others see a dog paw 😉
Beautiful shades. I wish I was confident enough to wear these shades on a regular basis as I would buy one but I am just not.
Totally understand!
These colors have such great dimension, though they do look awfully similar to each other.
I like how your product pic of Erotic looks like a kitten paw 😀
Normally I don’t wear lipgloss because it never seems to last for me, but this might be perfect because the lasting power is so impressive. I do love a bold lip color especially in the summertime, I could see wearing either of these since in the photographs (on the lips) they almost look exactly the same. Not my favorite applicator style but I think I could get over that for the staying power, I think I might try one of these, if I can just get over the price… It’s an investment right??
