Tom Ford Patent Finish Lip Color ($52.00 for 0.07 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a “lip stain with an ultra-glossy finish” that has “intense, vibrant color” and “long-lasting high shine.” There are eight shades in total; I bought three and was sent five, so I will have all eight shades reviewed shortly, while these were the first two I’ve finished testing. It’s a click-style product with a flocked, slanted applicator where the liquid color flows from. I’m not particularly fond of the applicator, though it is not rough or hard to use, but the flocking makes it harder to get really precise, clean edges (sometimes I feel like it gives a more jagged edge).

The formula feels lightweight, almost watery, when initially applied but thickens and feels more like a moderately tacky gel after thirty to forty seconds. It has great staying power with the glossiness lasting for six hours and the color itself still going strong eight to ten hours later (after two meals and coffee)–by the end of the day, it has more of a natural sheen to it (like a lip stain) but looked even. It does stain as well. I would forget that I was wearing it, which is a testament to how comfortable and hydrating it is for all-day wear. The coverage is nearly opaque but has that slight translucency that you would expect to see in a lip stain. I didn’t experience feathering or bleeding on these two shades. It has a strong, vanilla cake scent–not your typical vanilla but something sweeter–and noticeably stronger than other Tom Ford lip products. The formula reminds me of products like YSL Glossy Stains, Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer but with a slightly thicker consistency. The color range is more limited with all the shades being brighter, medium-to-dark in color, and between warm red and cool pink.

Tom Ford Erotic Patent Finish Lip Color ($52.00 for 0.07 fl. oz.) is a medium, fuchsia red with cool, blue undertones and a glossy finish. It had good color coverage with light translucency that you would see with a lip stain. The color goes on easily and evenly and sits well on the lips. The color was still going strong after ten hours of wear, though the glossiness lasted for around six hours. The formula was comfortable to wear and moisturizing over time. Anastasia Weekend Barbie (-, $16.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Infamy (P, $54.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Erotic (P, $54.00) is more pigmented (95% similar). MAC Soft Dream (LE, $21.00) is more muted (90% similar). ColourPop Dream Castle (LE, $10.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Big Bang (DC, $26.00) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). Chanel Amuse Bouche (P, $30.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Trinkets (LE, $10.00) is warmer (90% similar). Revlon Adorned (DC, $7.49) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Revlon HD Pink Ruby (515) (DC, $8.99) is more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Let's Stay Together (P, $24.00) is lighter, more muted (85% similar). Giorgio Armani #523 (P, $29.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Cherry Mochi (LE, $21.00) is less shimmery, more muted, cooler (85% similar). NARS Danceteria (P, $26.00) is lighter, more muted, cooler (85% similar). ColourPop Imaginarium (DC, $10.00) is more muted, less pigmented, glossier (85% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Boom Boom (210) (DC, $28.00) is lighter, cooler (80% similar). Dior Mona Lisette (872) (LE, $35.00) is warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Tom Ford Infamy Patent Finish Lip Color ($52.00 for 0.07 fl. oz.) vibrant, medium-rask fuchsia pink with cool undertones and a high-shine, glossy finish and very subtle fuchsia micro-shimmer. It had very nearly opaque coverage that applied evenly and smoothly, but there was a slight translucency that gave it the appearance of a lip stain. The shine wore long at six hours, while the color itself lasted well for ten hours (when I removed it) — and it was still quite apparent and rich at that point with a more natural sheen than a high-gloss finish. It was hydrating while worn. Tom Ford Beauty Erotic (P, $54.00) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). Revlon Adorned (DC, $7.49) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (90% similar). MAC Soft Dream (LE, $21.00) is more muted (90% similar). Revlon HD Pink Ruby (515) (DC, $8.99) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (90% similar). ColourPop Dream Castle (LE, $10.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Anastasia Weekend Barbie (-, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). Chanel Amuse Bouche (P, $30.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Trinkets (LE, $10.00) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). MAC Cherry Mochi (LE, $21.00) is less shimmery, lighter, cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Imaginarium (DC, $10.00) is less pigmented (85% similar). NARS Danceteria (P, $26.00) is lighter, more muted, cooler (85% similar). While I would never wear lip colors this bright, I think it’s adorable that the picture of the applicator for Erotic looks like a dog paw. 😉

They are gorgeous colours and my jaw dropped at the long wear time! I’ve never got a product to last that long on my lips, they eat lipstick! It would definitely be worth the money, but why bring out 2 very similar shades at the same time?! I won’t be buying, they’re too expensive for me, would opt for a cheaper dupe. I’d be delighted if someone bought one for me though!

It’s hideously expensive, and I don’t like the applicator, but the color and formula sound awesome. Is it my imagination, or do both colors look kind of similar to each other?

Hourglass had a tip just like this with their Aura lip stains! I’m not remembering if it was twist or click up but this isn’t new. I do love that they both take on a Plum Lush color! That’s my favorite go to lipstick got a MLBB! Now it has a glossy sexy sister! Thank you very much for your thorough review! I’ve been wondering what you thought of these! I may pick up one! ?

Every time I’ve worn one, I’m like “OH, yeah, this is STILL on?” The first time I wore the formula, I frequently forgot I was wearing it, and I had noted after six hours that it was going strong. I continued about my life, and realized at bed time when I went to remove everything that it was STILL vibrant.

Jane Avatar

Ugh, I hate clicky-pen applicators! They’re so messy, and they never dispense enough product until you give it one more click and it gushes out everywhere!

Christine Avatar

The formula is great, and there is NO taste to the formula, which is something that can be hit or miss on ones like this (like YSL), but the click-pen system is not my favorite. I wouldn’t buy a lot. I would buy one and use it up before acquiring another!

Like everyone else, I totally wanted these bc of the paw print! Ok, so now that I got over the “awwwwwwww” factor, I do love the shades, although they are similar. Still, it’s a bit to drop on this kind of product. I think I’m going to pass and try out the new Milk Makeup Oil Lip Stain instead.

I ordered Infamy and a couple of shadows/palette from the TF website and actually receiving the order is proving to be frustrating as they require a signature for home delivery. By contacting customer service, I can have my delivery held at the Fed Ex location, but actually getting in touch with the customer service is also difficult!!

My wallet sincerely thanks Mr. Tom Ford for not releasing a nude or coral.
These look even better than my favorite ysl glossy stains! But I hardly ever wear bright reds or pinks so I guess I’ll be holding out for more shade releases. 🙂

Something about Tom Ford as a company just skeezes me out. I can’t quite articulate it, but just… no. It’s not just that their ads can be misogynistic (though that’s part of it), it’s not just that I find the products overpriced (though they are), and it’s not just that I don’t really like the fashion sensibilities of the other branches of the Tom Ford empire (though that’s also true)… just… somehow I find myself going, “Nope. Not supporting that company.”

But DANG, if these don’t look great on you! Just the shot of shiny color that actually makes me smile in late winter. I literally looked at your headshots here and grinned. 🙂

Makeup is fun. I’m glad I get to experience even more of it vicariously through your research. Thanks!

You know, I didn’t really like YSL Glossy Stains when I tried them, but I think maybe I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind.

And I’ve not tried the Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer, but maybe I should!

I do like my Dior Fluid Sticks. Maybe it’s time to bust those out, again.

Christine Avatar

Well, the upside, if you didn’t like the Glossy Stains, then perhaps you would not like this one and all would be well 😉 Dior Fluid Sticks are a good alternative!

The only issue I have with the YSL/Giorgio Armani formulas is sometimes the scent is too strong. That’s probably the advantage of TF for me, the vanilla scent, which is personally more tolerable to my nose!

MichelleChefNYC Avatar

These are so vibrant and beautiful! They almost look squishy and jelly-like on the lips, really pretty… not sure I would reach for these enough to warrant the price tag, but they sure look gorgeous on you Christine!

Gillian Avatar

Oh my god, I think I’m in love! So so so gorgeous! My only concern is that they’re by Tom Ford and are therefore very expensive…

…but while writing this I’ve remembered that for my birthday I’m getting a gift voucher for the department store near me that has a Tom Ford counter. It would pay for over half the cost of one of these. Now I just need to pick one! I haven’t been this excited about a makeup product in ages!!! ?

Normally I don’t wear lipgloss because it never seems to last for me, but this might be perfect because the lasting power is so impressive. I do love a bold lip color especially in the summertime, I could see wearing either of these since in the photographs (on the lips) they almost look exactly the same. Not my favorite applicator style but I think I could get over that for the staying power, I think I might try one of these, if I can just get over the price… It’s an investment right??
