theBalm Spring 2011: Shady Lady Vol. 3

TheBalm Shady Lady Vol. 3 ($39.50 for 0.51 oz.) is an eyeshadow palette that includes nine shades:  Lusty Lee (silver shimmer), Envious Erin (shimmery pearl), Racy Kacy (copper shimmer), Safe Bet Annette (pale-pink shimmer), Runaround Rebecca (sage), Come-Hither Heather (soft taupe), Open To Offers Olwen (teal), All The Way Annie (shimmering amethyst), and Guilty Gwen (sparkly black shimmer).

  • Lusty Lee is a bright silver-gray with a frosted finish.
  • Envious Erin is a pale, creamy white with soft golden warmth.
  • Racy Kacy is a coppered brown with a frost-metallic sheen.
  • Safe Bet Annette is a pastel pink with a white frosted finish.
  • Runaround Rebecca is an olive green with a khaki brown base and frost-metallic sheen.
  • Come-Hither Heather is a mauve-y taupe witha frost finish.
  • Open to Offers Olwen is a rich, vibrant blue with a touch of teal and frost finish.
  • All the Way Annie is a red-based purple with soft silver flecks of micro-glitter
  • Guilty Gwen is a softened charcoal black with silver flecks of glitter. This was the only shade I had issues with–I had to scrape out the product to get it to show. It was so poor, I thought it was actually defective. (It is really packed on in the swatch to get it to show.)

my thoughts on the formula: With the exception of Guilty Gwen, these eyeshadows are soft, silky smooth, and packed with pigment. They apply evenly, blend out beautifully, and aren’t powdery at all (sometimes a side effect of really soft eyeshadows). The formula is the same as the individual eyeshadows–no skimping or cutting corners.

This palette has a good mix of colors, and I can see some combinations coming from the palette, though I see these more easily mixed with other products you already own. They are all rather shimmery/frosty finishes, which makes them easy to blend. The quality is really phenomenal, excluding Guilty Gwen, and well worth the price tag.

value: theBalm’s single eyeshadows retail for $16.00 and contain 0.12 oz. worth of product, while this palette retails for $39.50 and comes with 0.51 oz. worth of product. Single eyeshadows work out to be $133/oz. and the palette works out to be $77/oz. The palette is also an excellent deal, because each shade is approximately 0.057 oz. each (the average full-sized eyeshadow is 0.05 oz.), so you get more variety.

  • Product: 28/30
  • Value: 10/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

final thoughts: I had to take off two points because of Guilty Gwen, but I would have loved to give this palette full marks–it really is a beautiful palette with so many well-pigmented, easy-to-use shades.

I recently bought the Balmbini palette which contains 2 eyeshadows. They are great, but they almost irritate my eyes (Stila I cannot wear at all for this reason). Has anyone else had this problem with theBalm (Stila)?

I like the colors but am a little put off by the shade names on this one. Might just be me – they are not only a little over the top, but some are just reaching. I mean, “Open to Offers Olwen?” Really now?

I love The Balm Eyeshadows because they are all very soft and velvety and I have quite a few myself. This palette is gorgeous, especially the purples. I will considered this one, since I don’t have any of the colours in this palette, except for Racy Kacy.

I use a sponge tip applicator to remove the product from the pan, and then I use my fingers to apply. I don’t want my fingers to touch the actual eyeshadows, so I have to use something to get it out, but then still need to touch it so I can assess the texture better.

I think that this brand is under-hyped. I had never heard of them when I picked up the Shady Lady 2 palette and was surprised and pleased when I saw how great the shadows are. Their blushes are really nice too. I want to try more of their stuff and I hope that word gets out how great they are!

I LOVE Shady Lady palettes. I own all three so far and would definitely purchase any new volumes in the future. I am glad to see they have made their way onto Temptalia!

would love to hear how you feel 3 compares to 1 & 2!

if I have shadow on, it’s 90% likely to be shady lady. (otherwise usually BE or UD) Which shades are your favs?

Deb Avatar

Looks like a great palette for someone trying to build their colorful shadow collection! I’m pretty sure I’ve got close enough matches for all of these to pass on this, though.

YAY!!!! I love you love you love you Temptalia! Been dying to see these! Awesome swatches. I must say, I think the shades in vol 1 & 2 were better but these are some nice additions (def not substitutes). As far as the packaging, these are actually a favorite of mine because you can neatly stack all 4 palettes in a very tight space and the mirror is big enough to be useful (plus if you wanted to depot, cardboard is easier). On Gwen– I suggest trying it out wet as a liner, it looks similar to Felicia and Jordana both of which I find apply much better wet as liners some of the shadow/liners just work better wet (works ok for me since I am more likely to wear black as a liner than a shadow). Thanks so much for this review!

For some reason this palette is totally unappealing to me. The names, the packaging, seems so childish. I like a little fun with my makeup, but this is too cutesy. And then the shades, it’s a totally random compilation, and not very unique.

Squee! I love TheBalm e/s and those 2 purple shades are too die for! Man, I hope they release them as singles!

I have Vol. 2 and the two darkest shades Caught in the Act Courtney and Feisty Felica also swatch crap (craply? crappish? I dunno, they don’t look so good, LOL!) BUT… they do apply very nicely on the eye I’ve found. For some reason they swatch rubbish but when actually using them with the other shadows, they are much smoother and more pigmented. It’s weird.
They are very good used wet as a liner.

Christine, I know you’re super busy and have elebenty squillion things to do but I do hope you’ll try a look with these. 🙂

Why are their palettes underrated?!? I don’t get it. The texture and quality of these shadows are just amazing. I LOVE my ShadyLady Balm Palette vol.2, I wish I had gotton Vol.1. This one offers a lot of pretty colors, but they seem very dupable and don’t stand out to me as much. I don’t know maybe its different in person, but I am somewhat tempted to buy it. Do you think its worth shelling out for? Or are the colors just too dupable that you can skip this?

Christy Avatar

I purchased Vol. 2 and 3 shortly before Christmas after lemming over Vol. 2 for several weeks.I absolutely love them both. The pigmentation is excellent and they blend so well. I’d love to get my hands on Vol. 1 as well. Shady Lady is a relatively new comer but it’s a brand worth checking out if you have not.

Vonvon Avatar

I have Shady Lady Vols. 1 and 2. Love the shades and texture of the eyeshadows. Will definitely get Vol. 3. The colors are so different from those in Vols. 1 and 2. Much brighter shades, very Spring!

Get the to the local MARSHALL’S! I just picked up this palette for $17 + tax. A great deal! I agree with Christine’s review. The palette is fantastic. Peace 🙂

Just found all 3 Shady Lady palettes at TJ Maxx for $12.99 each! Unbelievable deal– and they had multiples of each volume. They also had many great thebalm makeup gift sets for the holidays (or just to treat yourself!) Plus all their skincare products are at TJ Maxx now and I’ve tried many and have so far been impressed. Had no experience with TheBalm prior to their arrival at TJ Maxx and now I own so many of their products and am absolutely in love! Very under-hyped brand :/

Sara Avatar

I’m really surprised that Guilty Gwen had poor pigmentation for you. I just picked up this palette for $12.99 at TJ Maxx, figuring it’s still a great deal w/ one bad eyeshadow in it. To my surprise, Guilty Gwen turned out to be super pigmented in my palette! Perhaps yours was defective 🙁 Great review though!

Laura Avatar

Same here with Guilty Gwen. I just purchased my palette today at my local Marshall’s and Guilty Gwen was incredibly pigmented and the glitter payoff was phenomenal!
