theBalm Shady Lady Vol. 2 Eyeshadow Palette

theBalm Shady Lady Vol. 2 Eyeshadow Palette ($39.50 for 0.60 oz.) was released last year but is still available at many major retailers. After reviewing Shady Lady Vol. 3, which is new for this year, I thought I’d better snag last year’s while I could. The nine eyeshadow shades included in this palette are: Caught in the Act Courtney (shimmering rich brown), Feisty Felicia (midnight black shimmer), Insane Jane (shimmery taupe), Bossy Bobbi (shimmering peacock blue), Makeout Mary (moss green shimmer), Just This Once Jamie (silvery lilac shimmer), Mischievous Marissa (luxurious champagne gold), Tempting Tara (shimmering sugar), and Devilish Danielle (golden peach shimmer).

  • Caught in the Act Courtney is dark chocolate brown with soft red undertones and flecks of copper shimmer. This shade is also available individually/permanently.
  • Feisty Felicia is darkened plum-black with silver flecks of shimmer.
  • Insane Jane is a medium-dark taupe brown with a metallic-frost finish.
  • Bossy Bobbi is a medium-dark teal-blue with a frost finish.
  • Makeout Mary is a yellowed khaki olive green with a golden shimmer-sheen.
  • Just This Once Jamie is a pink-mauve with silver shimmer and sheen. This shade is also available individually/permanently.
  • Mischievous Marissa is a muted orange with a frost finish. This shade is also available individually/permanently.
  • Tempting Tara is a bright white with a frost finish.
  • Devilish Danielle is a champagne peach with a frost finish.

my thoughts on the formula: theBalm’s eyeshadows are soft, silky smooth, and packed with pigment. They apply evenly, blend out beautifully, and aren’t powdery at all (sometimes a side effect of really soft eyeshadows). I find they are so easy to use, because they apply without fall out and blend with other shadows effortlessly.

theBalm’s single eyeshadows retail for $16.00 and contain 0.12 oz. worth of product, while this palette retails for $39.50 and comes with 0.60 oz. worth of product. Single eyeshadows work out to be $133/oz. and the palette works out to be $77/oz. The palette is also an excellent deal, because each shade is approximately 0.067 oz. each (the average full-sized eyeshadow is 0.05 oz.), so you get more variety.

Thanks for the review! All your hard work is appreciated!

I have this palette, and I love it to death, glad to see it got such high marks! 🙂

Pretty, very shimmery. I wish I could find a beautiful satin-finish palette. I feel overdone with an eyeful of shimmery shadow in the morning.

beautyaddict Avatar

I don’t find these very shimmery on except the 2 lightest and the dark shadow/liners. They seem more on the lines of satin for most of the midrange shades.

beautyaddict Avatar

my apologies, since I own the palette I was offering a bit more detail from my experience. the camera reflection makes the shades appear more glittery/shimmery where in actual use the midrange colors are much softer. christine applied swatches but the shadows blend very softly on the actual eye. I prefer matte/satin myself and Christine commented on Jamie it barely showed, so definitely that would not be the case with glittery shadows.

I have this and I ADORE it – I especially love Felicia, mine seems to have blue micro glitter in it as well.

It’s such a great palette, I hope you enjoy doing some amazing looks with it, Christine!

Linnea Avatar

A+ Christine! I haven’t seen one of these in awhile.

Loving Marissa… might have to grab this palette just for that shadow.. and Jane. 🙂

My favorite palette ever, would love to see some looks. Worth every dime of the price and then some. Swatches have 2 Insane Jane but you did a sep review on Jamie if anyone wants a swatch.

Note: these look/apply significantly different wet (at least the dark shades) so that’s worth trying out.

Now I can explain my balm fetish by directing people to an objective & skilled reviewer– WOOT!

I bet it’s gorgeous on you! I was guessing that or Bobbi (denim) or Marissa (champagne peach). 🙂

(hoping you use marissa in a look sometime, I know you’d come up with something stellar)

Sue Avatar

I love this palette but am holding off on eye products atm. It is absolutely gorgeous and if anyone is in the market for eyeshadows, these are a MUST. They are so buttery smooth with amazing payoff!!! And the colors are gorgeous and flattering 🙂

beautyaddict Avatar

FYI if anyone is holding off– this is already overdue for the disappearing act. it probably will be gone in a week or two and it will not be reissued.

I really like all the colors there, especially that blue! I’ve never used this brand before but the marks are so high and the swatches so beautiful I may have to indulge.

Rebecca Avatar

Ooh, gorgeous! I love the mix of colors. The flashes of color aren’t too overwelming, though I love brights and colors, I hate when a palette is all bright with maybe one neutral.

Feisty Felicia, is it anywhere near UD Rockstar?

Jesi Avatar

Definitely waiting at home for me… I saw your review for Vol 3 and checked out the Sephora site and knew I liked Vol 2 better since the colors appealed to me more. Then you gave it an A+. I saw your swatches and fell in love. I clicked on the link straight from here and purchased it right away. I am so excited to go home and see what looks I can create. Seems like a great travel palette. Thank God for Christine and Temptalia.

Jesi Avatar

Hey thought I’d let you know that I got too lazy to remove my makeup and since I only have two eyes I only did two looks. But the colors were gorgeous… so again… thanks much!

josie Avatar

Hey Christine! Wanted your opinion! The only decent(ie, smooth pigmented, easy to apply etc – the rest I own are just gimicky and disappear really quickly so I don’t really use them) eyeshadows I have is UD’s Naked palette, would you recommend Vol 2 or 3 of Shady Lady? I’m looking at expanding the range of colours I have so I can get more variety in my looks and I’m worried that Vol 2’s colours look too similar to the neutrals in the Naked palette? At the same time I don’t want to regret not having gotten Vol 2 if it might disappear sometime soon! Any thoughts?
