Tarte Poppy Picnic Amazonian Clay Eye & Cheek Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Tarte Poppy Picnic Amazonian Clay Eye & Cheek Palette
Tarte Poppy Picnic Amazonian Clay Eye & Cheek Palette ($38.00 for 0.41 oz.) contains six eyeshadows and one blush housed in a rectangular-shaped palette. It’s a warmer-toned set of matte neutrals paired with a frosted pink-coral blush. The colors work well together, and they were usable without primer, but Tarte’s formula here is one that will benefit from having the smoothness of a primer for the color to adhere to, for both better color payoff as well as easier blending, and then of course, longevity. Also, interesting thing to note is that this is priced the same as the Showstopper palette, but Poppy Picnic contains a lot less (0.41 oz. vs. 0.73 oz.).
Glisten is described as a “golden peach pink.” It’s a pink-coral with golden shimmer and a frosted finish. The texture was thin and dry, where the shimmer particles sometimes separated from the base color. If patted into the skin with a firmer blush brush to start, it helped a lot to keep the color together. It had semi-sheer color payoff that I could only build to semi-opaque coverage. The color lasted for seven hours on me, which was surprisingly short (especially since it’s supposed to last twelve!). This shade is also available individually in the permanent range, which performed better for me, when I reviewed it three years ago. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Summer Breeze is described as a “cream.” It’s a light, yellowed beige with a matte finish. It had decent pigmentation with a soft, silky consistency that was just a smidgen powdery. It lasted for seven hours on me. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Sweet Tea is described as a “tan.” It’s a muted, medium-dark brown with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. The texture had a silkiness to it that made it very blendable, even on bare skin, and it had mostly opaque pigmentation. It started to crease after seven and a half hours of wear. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Ice Cream Cone is described as a “chocolate.” It’s a blackened brown with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff, but the texture was slightly thin so it needs the help of a primer to go on smoothly and blend evenly. It stayed on for seven hours for me. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Barefoot in the Grass is described as a “nude.” It’s a light-medium peach with strong, orange undertones and a matte finish. It’s a bit powdery, but it applies fairly smoothly and blend well. It had decent to good pigmentation. On me, it creased after seven hours of wear. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Peach Poppy is described as a “peach.” It’s a softened orange with a matte finish. The texture was thin and a little powdery, so it was prone to sheering out and only had semi-opaque pigmentation. It lasted for seven hours on me before creasing. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Picnic Basket is described as a “brown.” It’s a dark brown with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. It had decent color payoff but was a little powdery, so it didn’t adhere as well to bare skin. It was buildable, though, and was fairly blendable when I used it. On me, it started to crease after seven and a half hours. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

After the couple raving reviews I’ve read so far I expected more. Nope, still got my sights set on the Showstopper palette 🙂
Showstopper is definitely easier to use! 🙂
They have two out right now that look similar but are different. I have the set from QVC and it’s cooler. I’ve got nothing but love for that one. This one looks too warm for me.
I think they could have done a lot more with the color range. The left and right trios are so close in color.
They are! Had the left side by more distinctly cool-toned, it would have been more versatile!
Oh wow, what a surprise. I thought this would get better scores. I was doing a massive ULTA haul last night with my 20% off Platinum member coupon, and was seriously looking at this palette, glad I didn’t pull the trigger. I have oily lids and already have problems with shadows creasing ( even with primer) so not sure if these shadows will cut it for me. Too bad, the colors are so wearable, and the kit is so convenient. For somebody with normal lids and uses eye primer, I hope this kit works out for them.
I think it should be better with a primer, but it’s one of those, “Yeah, you’re going to need a primer!” products – for all the reasons one would use a primer: color payoff, better blending, and longevity 🙁
Aww I really like this palette. I think it would be great for traveling and I thought the pigmentation was better than the Rainforest After Dark palette, which I also enjoy. I haven’t tried a Tarte blush other than the ones that come in a palette though, but I have heard the individual blushes perform better.
My individual Glisten definitely was better!
That’s a surprising grade for the blush. Usually the textures on their blushes are so good. It’s a beautiful color. I might pick the blush up as a single later. The eye colors aren’t as varied as I’d hoped. I might end up passing on this after all.
It was surprisingly dry!
I’m still thinking about their matte palette with 12 eye shadows. That’s more appealing to me.
Thanks for the review. It really helps me decide.
No prob, Valerie!
I really like the look you got. The blush and the peach poppy share are so pretty!
Thank you, Jessica!
Too bad about it’s overall score 🙁 Call me crazy because at first I thought meh, boring, not what I expected with a name like Poppy Picnic…but I actually really like the swatches you have here! I’m trying to think what I have in my stash to dupe with..but I still kinda want this :S I regularly use primer under my shadows so that’s not a big issue for me. I just really like the undertones in these.
If you use primer, you should be okay 🙂
A lot of the colours look very similar once they are on the eye. These colours are also very similar to others Tarte have put out. Not original enough for me.
For sure! Lots of similar options from previous Tarte releases.
I don’t care for the blush, and I have all the eyeshadow shades-they just have different names… I don’t mind when a brand uses the same products/shades in a palette/set (ie, NARS Laguna/Orgasm, MAC Carbon, etc…) as long as I can tell right away if I have those, but it just really irks me to see products just renamed, and I have to do comparison swatches. At least when UD did the Alice in Wonderland BOS, they listed the actual names of the permanent shade for reference.
I’d rather them create a standard set of eyeshadows and incorporate them + new shades. Too Faced does it a lot, too.
The blush reminds me of Too Faced Whos Your Poppy a little.
It’s similar!
I had really high hopes for this palette. I was even thinking of purchasing one for a giveaway but I’m wondering now if I should. I needed a specific color today and pulled out an older Smashbox palette I haven’t used in a while and I forgot what good quality shadows they make! I’ve been using my newer palettes and I pushed my Smashbox one to the side. I’ve wondered about the Amazonian Clay blushes. It seems when I swatch in the store, they wouldn’t go on as well as i’d like – haven’t bought on yet as a result. HMMMMM!!!!!!
Tarte’s blushes notoriously pick up oil extremely easily, which causes the surface to harden over time 🙁
i want Peach Poppy only 🙁 what eye shadow do you think it’s closest to when it comes to dupes? 😡
Hey Jackie!
Did you check the list? I pulled dupes and you can see where they rank/what’s still available 🙂
ack, looking at the dupes list just made me want samoa silk more.
🙁 MAC, why do u do these things to us….
I like the look of this actually!
Yay!
Unfortunately I’m gonna pass on this and the showstopper. There’s just so much out right now. I’d rather pick up the Kat von d and Laura Mercer palettes. I feel like they are more unique.
True! Lots out.
Is it just me or has Tarte’s quality (& quantity in some cases) gone down while their prices have gone up?
I feel like it’s all over the place, haha. You never know what it’s going to be!
You made such a beautiful look! I absolutely love it even though it sounds like this wasnt the easiest palette to work with. I just had to say something, so pretty!!!!
Aw, thank you Bonnie! 😀
I actually like this better than the other Tarte palette for summer, whatever the name is. Seems great for a neutral traveling palette. I’ve got Glisten in a Tarte blush palette, so I could easily take that palette with this when going out of town or flying internationally. I’m going to keep this one in mind as one to swatch in store to see if I could live with its shortcomings over the long term.
Hopefully this will work for you, Sandra!
Even with a not so-raving review, it still looks beautiful on you. (I just got it, prior to reading your review, so I’ll save the receipt). 😉
Those darmmmm 2 little letters “LE” get me EVERY time. GREAT marketing, bad for wallets.
It’s a sickness, I’m positive! My husband will concur. Haha.
On a different note, I’m always envious of the colors of your eyeliners. They’re gorgeous and flattering. Then I’m elated to see that they’re Sephora brand! You’d think when I’m in Sephora next, that is remember to pick them up? Nooope. Ugh! It’s still sale time, I just may need to place a web order. If you had to pick 3-4, which are your most used & versatile colors? Thanks and have a great weekend.
Thank you, Amy! 🙂
It’s hard to narrow it down to 3-4, but my most used ones are Flirting Game, Snakeskin Dress, Girls Night Out, and Good Mood!
