Tarte Fairytale & Festival Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lip Paints Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Fairytale
Tarte Fairytale Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint ($20.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium-dark blue-leaning aqua with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, which was buildable to opaque with two to three layers. The consistency was thin and spreadable, but it applied streakily and had a tendency to pull into lip lines as it was drying down.
The formula is supposed to have “high-impact, opaque matte color” that is non-drying and doesn’t crack or feather. I’ve tried most shades in this formula, and it can be rather hit or miss–probably more misses than hits. Unfortunately, Fairytale was another miss, as it just did not apply well and absolutely did look “cracked” as soon as I smiled. The color lasted for four and a half hours on me before fading more heavily from the center of my lips, and it was somewhat drying over time.

Festival
Tarte Festival Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint ($20.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a muted, medium rosy mauve with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly across the lips. The consistency was thin but not watery, and it spread well and did not look streaky at any point. Festival is a pretty color!
It is!
I was super pumped for FAIRYTALE but I decided to wait for your review to see how it behaved.
I think I could mix 31 Siren Song with a little 30 Sea Mist from Sephora to get a similar shade. 😉
I own 3 dupes for FESTIVAL so I’m not surprised I like the colour.
I wish it was better 🙁
Wow…Fairytale looks so splotchy and uneven. If they’d have done this shade right, it would have been a beauty. Eh, I’ve got to try on MAC Show & Teal, because it looks exponentially better!
I love how well Festival turned out, though! But I’ve got similarly mauvey shades up to my eyeballs.
I wanted Fairytale to apply better so badly!
Eek, that turquoise… If you’re gonna do an unconventional shade, you’ve got to do it really well, otherwise it’s simply unwearable.
I agree — it’s just not the type of shade that does well sheer/sheerer!
I love the color of festival! I don’t love the drying potential 🙁
My guess is your lips would not like these!
What a pity that Fairytale didn’t perform better. It’s not a colour for me, but I so like that “unconventional” colours for lips are becoming more common.
Me too, Helene! It’s great to see more brands do cool shades like Fairytale!
Hi Christine! are you going to review the new Tarte color splash lipsticks? love your website, your camera work is on point!
Sorry, I don’t have them!
I love the color of FairyTale, but now I’m glad I passed on it. I had a hunch it would be patchy.
I’m not totally shocked by the performance either, but I wish it was better!
For sure. If they’d done a good job with it, it would have been such a great addition to the unicorn collection.
Don’t they have festival in the permanent line, just this one is repackaged but same color? Hope so because it’s the only pink nude that goes well with my fair complexion without looking too beige concealer on me. I’m a 1.1 in smash box foundation so I love any nude that is a bit more mauve pink on me. Like a MLBB shade. It’s pretty as well.
