Sneak Peek: Urban Decay Afterdark Eyeshadow Palette Photos & Swatches

Urban Decay Afterdark 10-Pan Eyeshadow Palette

Urban Decay Afterdark Eyeshadow Palette ($49.00 for 0.60 oz.) includes 10 eyeshadows in deeper, jewel-toned shades with a few that are supposed to have a duochrome shift. The palette is limited edition and exclusive to Sephora, and it should arrive online on December 20th and hit stores by January 27th.

A few notes: Backfire is actually completely different than the permanent version; I swatched mine side-by-side, and the single I have is a cooler, more violet purple, whereas the one in the palette is warmer and more of a plum. Fringe seemed a bit richer in depth compared to the version in the Electric Palette. Lounge was similar in tone but the base wasn’t quite as deep, so it appeared lighter and somewhat greener overall. While Supersonic is not quite the same as Sonic, they are similar.

I think I like this Fringe better! I always wished the Fringe from the Electric palette was less bright, more subdued dirty blue. I have mixed feelings about this palette because on one hand I think it’s gorgeous but on another I already own 3 of these shades (although slightly different from your description) and the rest of the shades are dupable. I suppose we shall see how I feel when it launches LOL.

Fringe has really caught my eye, it’s so pretty.
And the name for the purple one? Really UD? There was no other name that would’ve fit the shade? I think Psychedelic would’ve been nice.
But, it’s kinda funny that that name is right next to the shade backfire.

Wow, the quality seems great! Yay for those who don’t have dupes. But but between UD Spectrum, Kat Von D MetalMatte, Vice Reloaded, and some UD singles, I think I have all shades covered except for Alter, Scene, and Druggie. Really wish those came in singles

indoorkitty Avatar

Christine you always do the most beautiful colorful eye.
I’ve tried replicating color placement many times but I just don’t get it right lol
Anyhoo the swatches look pretty decent, I’m waiting to hear your review to see if I want to get it. I kind of regret not getting the spectrum palette from last year. That one was beautiful, full of greens and blues. I know most people prefer warm tones but I still feel there are too few nice quality cool toned palettes out there.
On another note, I hate how my knee jerk reaction to any UD palette is “must have it” as it seems like they are really not putting much effort into their palettes. Every time I look at the naked smoky I have to remind myself that the quality is not there. Same with the full spectrum -.-

It sold out :/
Last year there were so many palettes and I didn’t want to get suckered into the hype so I only got the mufe 15 pan one. Then spectrum went on sale and for the life of me I don’t know why I didn’t get it, I regret it so so much :/

Anyway, I really wish cooler toned palettes aren’t such a rarity, and also that colorful ones aren’t usually limited. Kat von d should seriously make hers permanent.

Keep an eye out at Nordstrom rack! I was in one the other day and they had one of the Vice palette’s for like $25. A ton of UD clearance goes to Nordstrom. I just bought some of the primer potion and the liquid liner for super cheap and some of the good karma brushes. They had a bunch of the Gwen Stefani collab stuff too!

Much better than I initially expected, and they swatch/work pretty well. What a great gift for a semi-newbie that already has a good neutral palette or a UD fan. I see why comparisons to metalmatte and vices are inevitable, but aside from the repromotes, which don’t seem spot on, this is more unique than not. Good work, UD. You’re gaining back the trust.

These look like they have swatched pretty good. I probably have several dupes for each shade and I do have Lounge as a single. I can see what you mean, Christine, my Lounge has a much redder/brown base color. I will have to see when this hits the stores whether having all of the shades in one palette is a reason to buy this. I am taking my daughter to Europe next summer for her college graduation and we are already talking about what makeup we are taking. We have pretty much matching palettes as I buy her one when I buy my palettes but she has all of the Naked palettes so rather than duplicate what we are taking we are agreeing to each take a different palette!! We’ll see.

Bailey Avatar

Do all of these shadows also come in the permanent line or other palettes? I’m curious because I do own the electric, vice 3, 4 and the reloaded one so idk if i’ll bother buying this one

Rochelle Ellis Avatar

Glad this is Sephora exclusive. I am definitely getting it and I can see it being VIB rouge exclusive for at least a few hours. I’m excited.

This palette swatches fantastically well! It is just beautiful! I do see some very real overlap/dupes of KVD MetalMatte’s Metal shades, plus UD Orig Spectrum from last year, however. Therefore, I probably don’t need this one.

Also, as much as I love this much better quality comeback for UD, the shade name “Druggie” is thoroughly awful. It would be RESPONSIBLE of UD to change that name to something less offensive! Besides, it looks identical to Omen anyways, could’ve kept that name.

Stephanie Avatar

I have resisted all the hyped palettes from 2016. I only have a few UD singles and no palettes, so this will likely be mine. I waffled on KVD Metal/Mattes and missed out and I won’t make that mistake again.

Shannon. N Avatar

Yep, I only would wear Alter!

But again, I’m not buying this and i’m advising my makeup wearing friends not to buy it either.

As I mentioned in the preview. As someone who’s best friend is a recovering drug addict. I can’t support this! that’s just my opinion though.

Nicole Avatar

I’m not big on bold, crazy looks. My electric palette literally has been touched once. So, when I first heard this was replacing the electric. ( Not sure if that’s true or not) I was going to pass. I love this though!

popscockles Avatar

I love shimmery glittery eyeshadows, so I want this badly! A couple colors remind me of KVD’s Metal Matte, but that palette is so crazy cool-toned and this one…ooof, I want it! I think it would actually fill in some blanks that the Metal Matte leaves out. I think I just convinced myself I need this! 😉

Aside: Christine, I love how you started showing on the front page what products are reviewed within the post itself! So helpful, and such a graceful and elegant solution (speaking from a web design perspective!) I saw someone request that function a few days ago, and you guys have already implemented that request. Amazing! Thanks so much ~ You and your team rock!

JC Avatar

Damn, I didn’t think I would want this, but it swatches so beautifully! I’ll definitely lust after this palette when it releases, even though some of the shade names and the sheer glitteriness of this palette make me leery. I’ll probably wait and hope for it to go on sale like the last few UD releases though, not gonna lie.

Sarah Avatar

I did not expect these swatches to be so amazing… I love these shades. I’m a color person, but not someone who loves the typical color palette. This, however, I may pay full price for if the review is good. Fingers crossed.

BonnieBBon Avatar

Sold! Unless you come out with a surprise F this baby is MINE ALL MINE :::cackles maniacally::: I’m not normally a super colorful shadow girl but these hit my sweet spot. I’m surprised lounge is called lounge because while they are the same on paper visually they are way different! Ya know, this lounge reminds me of the green/brown duochrome-ish shade in the wet n wild comfort zone palette far more than the UD single of the same name. I have the backfire single too (that was such a good collection) and agree completely it’s different.
I have to again praise your amazing skills. That eye look is fantastic!! I love how sharp each shade is, they are each so distinct and not muddy at all. You are the blending whisperer lol they are blended yet completely their own. Skill!

CatG Avatar

They named an eyeshadow Druggie? Yeah not a fan of the name choices.

That said, it swatches beautifully and the eye look you created is gorgeous, but it isn’t worth buying for me since I have Fringe and seem to have dupes for most of the shades.

Scarlett Avatar

Does this not look *suspiciously* similar to the metals in the Kat Von D MetalMatte palate?

I wonder if its a reaction to the worsening reviews/quality (and shadow size!) of UDs palates in general, compared to the increasingly rave reviews of Kat Von D’s metallics and the growth and spread of her brand (including its significant England release). A lot of the reviews of the Full Spectrum palatte seemed based around the words, “very chalky” and, “Why is it not the Mi Vida Loca?”.

Almost as if UD had been, over the previous few months, carefully watching the makeup releases and main current competitors and trying to target it directly.

I’m really curious if others have noticed this?

PrNoir Avatar

I feel like Alter, Scene and Supersonic can easily be duped by some OCC stuff I have, and lounge can be duped multiple times in my collection from different brands. Off Duty, Sinful and Paralyzed can def be duped by some KVD and colourpop stuff I have. The palette is pretty, but the only colors I really like are fringe and druggie, and I already have the electric palette.

Ita Avatar

Hi – I don’t know how to recreate a look just by looking at it. Do you have any tutorials on these beautiful looks using the after dark palette or can you make some please? I am at a lose on how to use the palette save for the few tutorials that are available on you tube. Even if you could give me a step-by-step instruction if it comes to that I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
